A Curious Chicago Miser.
Chicago Tribune : Mention was made
some time ago of the death of James II.
P\ino , a miher , who was a laigo stock
holder in the Chicago Land company.
In the exchanges from the New
York clearing house received by
the Metropolitan bank of Unit
city recently was a package of
greasy , old-fashioned bank notes amount-
nip : to $12,300. the notes having been is
sued by the Metropolitan bank when it
was n btixtc institution. In October , 1801 ,
Paine deposited iv draft for $52,500 in
the Metropolitan bank , drew out $12.500
in cash , and received four deposit cer
tificates for $10,000 each. A short time
ago Mr. Chickering , one of the execu
tors of Paino's estate , presented the cer
tificates and received the $40,000. ,
Hud the certificates carried the
alleged interest the money would have
increased to nearly $20,000. The $12,000
in bank notes were the same bill given
by I'uinfl a quarter of a century ago to
make up the balance of the drafts. The
bank refused to redeem the bills pi cur
rent nwnoy on the ground that the six
years' limit , which wus declared in 1803 ,
when the bank became a national one ,
and which was to the effect that the bank
would redeem its notes issued under the
staco law for six years following , had ex
pired. Mr. Chickering will bring suit
against the bank ,
Brought Him Hack.
Sig Turkclson , the 18-year-old run
away , is once more at homo. Ho arrived
ut Harvard , this state , Sunday , and to his
dismay found that his father was there ,
in fact , hail been in the town twenty-four
hours. . Ho was brought homo yesterday.
