The saloons seemed to bo closed pretty thoroughly yesterday , but "Sport" Miller , who steps in often whuru angels fear to tread , succeeded in uuunching his thirst. ( Joseph Proctor appears at the opera housu this evening , .supported by Ids daughter , in "Viririnius. To-morrow idght , "Nick of thu Woods" is to be given. Henry Russell , need about 10 years , died at the home of Ills parents , on High street , Friday evening , after a brief ill ness. The funeral services were held yesterday. The school board is having surveys alul estimates madu to arrive at tint best plan for cutting down High School hill and lowering the building. The work will probably commence boon. Th's board of directors of the Council BlnH's National bank held a meeting Sat- urdav and elected L.V. . Tulluysas presi dent and T. J. Kvans vice president. James N. Urown remains as cashier. The boys had a special from Captain Kusftcll yesterday , saying ho would ar rive home from his wedding trip on a fast freight last night , and they were prepar ing to receive him with duo enthusiasm. Work was continued yesterday on the improvement of Jntlgu James' brick block , although it was Sunday. Thu roof being open and there being liability of great damage in case of rain , was the reason assigned . A telephone message was received from the waterworks Saturday night , asking thu police to come down and suppi ess a fellow who was drunk and terrorizing the neighborhood with a revolver. When the police arrived the tcllow had sub sided of his own accord. A trail ) ] ) hanging about the vicinity of the Chicago & Northwestern depot , caused some alarm among somepf the women j'lVinj ; in mac AiCinity. lie MP- > arrested awl gave the name of Nick Eclongor. A cliuncG to explain will be given him this morning. The entertainment given by the chil dren of thu Home of the Friendless is to 1)0 repeated , with some changes in the programme , on Sunday evening , May 2 , at the opera , house. The entertainment is to bu free , and a collection is to bu taken for the benefit of the institution. If the mayor and his police force do not stop their foolishness about shutting up the saloons and restraining the boys Sunday , they will break the heart of thu reporters , for the Sundays under the new regime do not produce enoutrh items for a country weekly. Yesterday every thing was still ovoept the dust , which Was a little too ily , on the business streets particularly. The telephone service in the Blufl's is increasing in quantity as well as quality , The past two days there has been homo little interference with thu usual smooth running of the olllce , on account of thu laying of a new lloor and the putting in of a new switch board , but these improve ments were necessary , and now that they nro made the service will resume its ac customed regularity. The examination in the case of Arch Cod'man , charged with threatening violence to Fremont lionjamin , has ro- fiultud in his being held in $000 bonds to keep thu peace from going to pieces. The chargu that Mr. Coil'man made an assault upon a woman is to bu hoard nuxtThurhday. The piling up of so many charges and suits against Coil'man rather turns public sentiment in his favor , it seeming as if his enemies were overdoing thu matter. Missouri Valley wants to bo tiic scat of government for Harrison county , and wants to badly. Some of the enthusiastic citizens are trying to boom ti plan by which Missouri Valley is to donate the grounds for a court housu , and raise the necessary money for a building , if the county will give it the seat. Logan does not propose to give it up , and by keeping thu bidding lively there is a good pros pect for the county to get a court house pretty cheap. "J haven't ' seen a copy of the ordi nances since I have been mayor , " re marked Col. Chapman to the council the other evening. "I haven't boon able to llml any. How have you been getting along , naven't you had any ? " Thu in quiry ditl not bring forth any satisfactory response. The olif mayor was not so anxious to know what the ordinances of the city were , and the council has been ( jetting along with an old scrap book , which is now being used in gutting out tlm now coditication. The need of hav ing the ordinances in some form whuru they can bo referred to is very great , and the work of getting out the new volume does not progress very rapidly. liauy I have one of the finest lines west of Chicago , My prices \\ill bu right and quality always of the best. Barbers have some troubles as well as other folks , and when Long came around the next day with a big gun , hunting for Anderson , Joe just jumped out of town , and has stayed out over since. Long would have shot him sure. I hear that he is working over the river , and I expect almost any day to hear that Long has run across him there , and put a hole through him. " A lawyer in the next chair straightened up , after his shave , and while the finish ing touches were being put to his hair , ho imparted the information : "Thoy were going to have an information lilcd against Long for shooting at his wife , but when it was all drawn up , the woman backed out and wouldn't sign it. After getting out there in California , a fcllcv , ' r.r.r/ic ; ! ilc'jcrtf ' , who * 7"ni oi'twith ' him , got him to start a saloon and a gambling place , lloborts was a carpen ter by trade , and ho didn't know any thing about such a buoiness , and Dork- .sen , you know , is no gambler Roberts made him believe that ho knew till about it , and that there was millions in it , and so Dorkson let Roberts ire ahead and manage the business.
