It was PO brilliant anil warm otitslilu that on the board prospects of catly spring Reeding and a bonntlfnl crop of winter wheat were so favorable that It took She life entirely out ot the bulls. It was said that seeding had alicady bcRim In the noith- west. In the absence of any outside news looking to the enhancement of values and with the local temper unqualifiedly bearish , wheat took the downward track nt the very Opening , and reactions were very feeble. "This hasbccn the nulnl at which the mnikct > as rallied several times. " said an operator , rcferting to the quotations on the blackboard , 'and the majority of the crowd iloubtlcss ex pect to see It do so n aliibut the handwrit ing Is on the wall , and all of thn big ptofes- slonal traders who have been hammering the market will get In their work piutty soon. " Some predicted fcOo for May wheat before the close of the week. Trading was llbeuil nil through to-day , some largo blocks of ptopctty changing hands during the forenoon. After prices got below Sic , the weak holdeis began to unload considerable long wheat held by country traders being dumped. The decline was checked when the prices for Jlay wheat reached U3c. At no time during the foie- noon did the market quite recover to yester day's closing llguies (84 ( } c bclnr the top ) nnd the better feeling developed was owing in n measure to a sharp reaction In the produce market after the early bicak. TradIng - Ing ut above We or below 83c was not latgo In the aggregate. Yesterday's clearings at New York were reported -1(1,500 ( bushels of wheat nnd 1100 ! ! barrels of Hour. Warren began buying heavily. llo and his following put the prices of May up to S ° .b2K@9.i and Juno to SU.WK , The- jeport was that heavy parties were buying Oirouch Warren , but gossip had it later that io was taking In short pork and trying to boom the maiket for the amount in order to get better carrying charges in June. After Warren quit buying the maiket leccdcdaiul ixicamo dull , but not without firmness , and later the tone was again stioug. May pork closed at 1 o'clock at 5'J.bU and June at UoAitn The maikets were firmer on the late board , all speculative aiti- cles closing at practically the outsid prices of the day. Ohio Farmer : II the farm is nil tillable , I should diviilo the sixteen acres into four suctions of four acres eneh ; but It is not necessary to fence it , except the four acres vvhcro thu hou.su ami bam stand. This plat 1 should divide up in the follow ing vvny : Two acres for house , .small lawn , kitchen , barn-yard , etc. This is rather largo , 1 think , anil less would do if the house and barn arc in the right pos ition ; but call it two acres. Then one acre for fruit blackberries , raspberries , currants and .strawberries. One acre for poultry ( his aero .should be .set to pear , ( ininco and peach trees , anil plum can bo added if thought best ; this alVords good shade for the fowls ; I find that the trees do much bettor vvliuro the poultry run than those where they do not. On this aero I would have four poultry houses , with yards for runs of one-fourth aero each , and should keep twenty-live in each yard one yard of either bull' , white or partridge Cochins for hitters ; one yard of Plymouth rocks or Wiamlotts and two of Le hoins the Cochins for bitters , the the Plymouth Rocks for early broilers and thu Leghorns for eggs. Tim remain ing twelve acres I should use as follows : four acres for clover , four acres for boil ing crops and the remaining four acres for corn and potatoes. On so small a , 1)laco ) wheat and oats do not pay. as Mr. ji'onard has already shown. The twelve acres should bo rotated with clover , roots , millut. fodder corn , and any thing that will do for feud. On the place four cows ( and they must bo good onus , not necessarily of long ped igrees , but of individual merit ) can bo kept for the first two or three years : after thatmoro can bo added. 1 he manure from the four cows , one horse and 100 hi'iis will go far towards enriching the land. Apply the hen manuio , well saved , to the hill , ns the best results are obtained in this way , utilize every corner with something that will cither soil , make fodder der for the cows or food for the. hens , and my word for it the young man with the sixteen acres will have profitable busi ness enough at homo ; with "his little farm well tilled and his little wife well willed"he will bu as contented asthoso who roam their hundred acres ovor. One other thing 1 will mention , and that is this : Put in a patch of early potatoes. I found that nearly every season half an acre or more of extra early potatoes arc as profitable as any natch of ground on the place. Study the wants of your nearest village and town , and supply the people with the choicest and earliest of fruits and vegetables. Odors In Milk. Farm , Field and Stockman : Wo do not allude to the odors absorbed by the milk , but to those imparted to it immedi ately at the time of milking. Again vvo ask , as we have done before , "How many dairymen wash the udders of the cows before milking them ? " Some dairymen will even read with astonishment our in quiry , for it is well known all over this great country , with but few exceptions , the attendant goes to the stalls and milks the cows without washing the udders , and carries the milk to the milk room. Yet in that short period of time , before the milk can oven cool , it has received greater damage than can occur to it in any other manner. In the first place , vfhcro the cows arc kept in stalls , it is not an easy matter to have them drop the solid or liquid ma nures to the rear , and entirely out of the stall. Even then a portion may spatter upon the cow's bed , and if the cow ad justs herself for rest during the night she will probably gut moro or less of the of fiiisivu ! , matter on her udder and teats. This can not bo prevented , and exists as a stern fact , as nil well know that fre quently the whole side of the body is sometimes covered with filth. The cow also perspires , and though the perspiration may bo insensible , yet every pore of her body is eliminating odors , matter being exuded that is really injuri ous. There is no more direct channel downward for this eliminated matter than that which leads to the uitdcr and teats. True , a portion may evaporate , but there is ncvurtholcss , a proportion on those uarts. A cow also sheds her hair , or rubs oil some of it from her skin. In so doing she also loosens more or loss dirt from hoi hide , which may as easily bu dusted upon the udder as oNuwhore , whiles thu loosened ened hairs find a lodgment also where- ever they fall , Then there is the salivi : from the tongue when she licks herself , to say nothing of the kicks and scratches received from the leet , which throw lilt ! in every direction. Will the dairyman remove this liltli with thu strainer ? It is impossible foi him to do so oven if ho strained the milk a hundred times. Thu strainer may nr- rest thu hairs , but the moist hand of tiie milkman will remove the dirt from the teats and lower part ot tiio udder , which will dissolve , und thcv can no moro be -trained out than can the cream , The beginning of improved dairying i.s at tin pail , und plenty of water , clean hands , i dry towel and a good washing of the ml dcr and teats is the lirat essential. This Progrcfslvo Farmer. Country ( Jentlemaii : This nun is sur rounded by neighbors who do not believi in improvements in farming , and noi one of them for some distance arouni takes an agricultural paper. When mi friend built his new burn , they said "What docs the fool want of such a grea barn ? Ho never will half liill it. " Hu the owner expressed regret to mo thu ho did not build it 50 per cent larger , as his crops had already outgrown it , a < the result of hi ? ttnderdraining tun butter tillage and better farming generally ally for which ho fools largely indebted to your valuable paucr. 1 listened for an hour with interest tc his rcporta of successes when his ignor nut neighbors made failures. Not on < of Chose- neighbors uttumlcd the institute tuto , which was only two miles away The old-fashioned straight-toothed liar row was good cnonglt for thorn , thej said tjioy had no occasion to pay $30 01 $10 for a new-fangled arrangement They would worl : all day sowing'gras seed by hand- * rather than pay $5 for n nice llttlo machine that would enable them to do as much before breakfast and sow it better. 11 li.ivo only pity f or such men. Why will they not learn the full , broad meaning of tlip law , "As n man sows , so shall ho reap" ? A certain rich , philanthropic gentle man , living in Ohio , has been talking of holding a farmers1 institute , in every township in ins county , for two days , to try to get outbid inlluenco for good the class that most ndcd it. The county .meetings only drew In , os n ruin , the few ( u each township that nro most intoresto.il In improved agriculture. Those witli little interest will not take the trouble to go far ; but by a little e.xtru oflbrt might he got out to a meeting in their own township. If such a meeting could bo held In every town , and thai followed up by some organization , such as a grange or a farmers' club , and plen ty of good papers were subscribed for , tjreat good might bo accomplished. Hints niul StiKKestlons. DifToront breeds of sheep should not bo kept together , ns the same conditions are not equally suited to all. Keep no moro animals than can bo comfortably nccomodatcd ; otherwise they prove an expense ratliur than profitable. Siicoj ) sick nnd dying on dry provender have had the mortaiitv arrested when ensilage diut was substituted , says an ex change. Study what your soil and the crops you grow need , and then , as best you can , feed so us to make special manures to meet the demand. When land is plowed very early in the spring the grass seed often fails to sprout , especially on heavy soils , because of low tempoi-atuuro. Knsilago is steadily increasing in favor among stock raiders. 1 only requires to bo better understood to bo as universally used as is hay and other dry feed. Now is the time to prepare the garden. Use plenty of well rotted manure , spade or plow ( Tuonly before putting on the manure , and work the soil to ttie finest possible condition. When a young lamb becomes weak and debilitated , after nearly rcudv for wean ing , it may bo strengthened by giving it feed twicu a day of oatmeal gruel and warmed milk. Look after the small things of the farm. Larger profits in proportion to the cost of production arc realised from .sales of butter , eggs , spring chickens , asparagus , etc. , than from tiiu main crops. Onion seed may bo sown very carlv in the spring , in fact as soon as the ground can bo made ready to receive it. The soil should bo well plowed , then har rowed , rolled and harrowed again , un til thoroughly pulverized. It should then bo nikcil clean , of sticks , stones and clods. If the ground is bare over the straw berry bed < -eo that the wind lias not blown off the litter intended for pro tection. If tins covering of the bed has been nuglccted it Is not too late to apply it.'f 'f ' ( trow a crop , of peas in the old orchard and lot the pigs harvest it. Sow- early , two bushels per acre , with -100 pounds of good fertilizer. Good for the peas , butter for the pigs and best for the orchard. Use plenty" of { grass seed , in order to make an allowance lor that which will be destroyed ori eaten by birds and in sects. A light luirrowing will always prove beneficial upon newly seeded grass lands. ' The hog tliAt receives a variety of food , instead of lying fed exclusively upon grain , will riot only grow faster but fatten more rapidly when being prepared for the butcher , as well as yield a better quality of pork. Thorough acquaintance with processes of plant growth is necessary for judicious manuring. Apply fertilizers within reach of plant rootlets , bn it their nature to run near the surface or down deep into the ground. Care should bo used in feeding grain to thin sheep that moro injury docs not accrue than good. Their digestive or gans arc weakened by lack ot stillicient nourishment pruviously , and an exces sive amount of ricli teed will overtax their capabilities and entirely break down their sy.stems. When hot beds urcjdosired for only a fe'w flowers and vegetables for home use , says tiie American Cultivator , the frame may bo made movable. Dig a bed 0 feet wide , 2 feet or moro deep , and of any length desired Level oil' the bottom of this bed and drive down a strong stake in each corner , to which nail cheap boards. Make the frames IS feet in length by C feet 10 inches in width , so that a sash 0 feet by 0 may bu used. It the soil is not in a proper condition for the reception of seed failure to ger minate will uo the result. The most im portant matter is to render the seed bed linonnd extra preparation in respect will bo greatly to the advantage of the young plants after they had started. Ilotton corn cobs are said to bo a valu able ferlili/.er on any soil that is deficient in potash , and their vuluo la much en hanced by being rotted with other ma nure. In c.caning up hog pens , theru- fore , care should bo taken to collect all thu cobs and mix them with other refuse. Gentle handling is a great factor in securing - curing a horso'ri gootl will , and nothing will.enable a man to got the best work from his horse more than the animal's good will. Who that has had anything to do with hoi-M'S needs to bq reminded of how much greater efforts will bo put forth by a good horse in response to his beloved master's tricndly voice than in resopnso to an angry tone or the crack of the whip ? Manure for hot-beds should bo fresh and well worked , as well as free from coasre litter , Bleached muslin ( oiledmay ) bo used in place of glass , if preferred , and later in the season cold frames , shel tered from the winds , will answer for late cabbage plants. The height of folly is found In the man who keeps a Hock of breeding ewes , uses a good buck each year , feeds them well all the winter and then allows them to take earo of themselves on the cold or chilly nights of early spring , during thu thu lambing season. ' The careftilshephprd varies the feed of his Hocks to sujt tjieir condition nnd ap petites. On v.old , clear days this stock will cat nearly twicu as much as on warm , wet day * , and the amount of feed should bo gag'pd iiccordingly. Poisonous gases' are given off by both trrowing unu harvested fruits such ad oranges , apricots and quinces says a Frunoh botanist , and death by poNouing has resulted in stooping in rooms exposed to such omanatioiH , I , i < r U.
