and dress material , which , for the scrvlco
for which it is designed , is Incomparably
better and cheaper than Anything hereto
fore invented. The adaptation of their
filamentous fabrics to household comfort
is so far superior to the contrivances
to which wo are accustomed that the
change wilt bo in the nature of a revolu
tion In certain lines of trade , The basis
of the whole mattoi' , however , la simple
in the extreme. It vests upon that prin
ciple of resistance to the twisting proooss
which wo call "torsion. " Fine wires are
braided by a wonderful machine devised
for the purpose Jiot as wires nro woven ,
in netted sheets of curtain width but in
a continuous tubular or cylinderical and
seamless form , of any diameter desired.
As the wire cylinders pass from the
machines they look like long sinuous
lengths of cobwinl anacondas which
ono may see through. The wires cross
ono another diagonally , instead of at
right angles , to tlio length of the cylin
der. The cylinders , being afterward cor
rugated and shaped for the purpose de
sired. are ready for their various uses.
Heroin lies the ( lillorcnco between the
brained and the woven fabric , and also
tlio whole point nnU pith ot this novel
device. In whatever way a pressure Is
applied to the wires BO braided and cor
rugated , the result is the required tor
sion ; the wirps are twisted , and when
pressure is withdrawn they resume their
original shape. Soft , untemporcd wire ,
so treated , develops a remarkable spring
iness and btnbborn retention of shape.
Stool wire , in the prepared form in which
it goes into tlio manufactured article ,
after being subjected to 00,000 llattoning
blows , retains its original shape. These
springs are , therefore , practically indestructible -
destructible for any use to which a metal
lic spring may bo put.
In preparing the springs for special
uses after being pressed into the particu
lar form desired they arc tempered by
healinir , and thereafter retain that shape
without losing their clastic quality.
Cut into proper lengths these oraidcd
springs make tlio cleanest and most
comfortable mattresses which can bo
conceived of. They are just as good for
pillows. Notwithstanding their constant
pliability tlioy are always in .shape ; they
cannel be disarranged. Their adaptation
to hospital use , as well as to eleany
and comfortable housekeeping , beems
perfect. For easy-chairs , sofas , car-seats
and backs , baby carriages and baby bells ,
sleeping cars and for carriage seats and
cushions these springs will certainly
supplant hair , moss feathers , cotton ,
wool , and all the various slulls of ono
sort or another whidh has heretofore
boon made to do upholstering duty
will not accumulate in chairs or
seats cushioned with these self-vonlilat-
ing springs , and moths \vill not cat them

gether. In time possibly tlio tariff duty
may lead to the necessity of making fine
steel wires in America , if money can be
saved thereby or tlio cost of the goods re
duced.
Patents have boon obtained in Euro
pean countries , in India and Hnr/.il , and
machines are now in progress of con
struction for an Anglo-American com-
paii3' , under the management of Mr.
llonry S. Stokes , of this oily , which will
establish its manufactory in London ,
where the raw . material may bo more
cheaply procured.
Among othdr things for which braided
wire has been found specially adaptable
is the manufacture of bustles and breast
works for the Indies. The ono thing is

articles so far outruns the present
capacity of the company for producing
tliem that it cannot lilf its orders for
other goods. The operatives and ma

ritory , New Mexico and the Sandwich
islands. A bu tjo that no amount of
crushing or mashing will get out of shape
is a desideratum which the ladies every
where appreciate.
