The man ( Jlcason , who was hurt by falling dirt last Wednesday night , was reported as very low yesterday , and fears were entertained that ho would not re cover. The crazy Chinaman is still being kept at the city jail , and indulges in frequent wild spells , It bus not been decided what to do with him. The jail is certainly no lit place for him. Everybody should buy a ticket for the charity ball Saturday night whether able lo attc'nd or not. Another $1,000 would not be too much to distribute among the poor of the oily. It is also said that it will 1)0 ) 'icA as a shoo factory , which is amoncr me new manufacturing enter prises to bo added to the city this year. In the circuit court yesterday the case of Dr. Uulliiigor against the estate of Catherine Daly was on trial. This is a suit to recover an $800 bill for profes sional services , the defense claiming that the claim is exorbitant. There seems to bo a great latitude given doctors in charging for services , one witness swear- ilig that he made his charges according to the ability of tlio patient to pay. The Dcnison newspaper rivalry is amusing. The Itevjow got the start of the Bulletin by publishing an extra con taining an account of tlio burning of the Wc.it liaptist church of that place. The Bulletin gels back at it , however , by criticising tlio account given by the He- view as follows : "Tho statement that 'intense heat caused by Hie snow storm' was noted by the Review's scicntilic edi tor , while the historical branch observed that it was tlmgreatest lire 'which Dcni- npn has ever witnessed since it was in habited. TALKING OVER CITY TICKETS A CitiicEs' ' Meeting To-night to Pramo tha One. SOME ELEGANT SOCIAL EVENTS. An Attorney's K\icrlcncc | In Jlnll- romlinir Council ItluITi * liny lit Kansas Ciittlnjf Surnpont On- nwa Shoot lnt nt Vnll. Tlio Pot Tlio cull for a citizen's niuoting. lo bo liclil in the Masonic hall this evening , lias liocu hlgucil by iiiuiiy leading men of both parlies. There is nn evident en- llni ia iu tlirou hont the city in favor of . elcctiiis n. city ticket , \vilh a view of get- liii Kood inon into olllue , ralhcr than to bestow tlio olllccs ns parly honors to party puts. It is evident that Council lllulls needs its best citiy.cna to represent it now , and yet there scorns grout dilllculty in getting such to allow their names to bo used. A number of the best cltl/.cna have been mentioned for mavor , but most of them peremptorily refuse to con sider the matter favoronly. It is e.v- peeled that the meeting to-night will bring such n pressure to uear upon .somo of these as lo gain Iheir consent to servo the people. Tliero lias never been hero a city election in which such a peculiar feeling was manifest In the preliminary work. The danger of such ti citizen's meeting , for such u purpose , is that the better citizens will remain away , or elj-o allow themselves to bo hoodwinked by more cunning and ambitious politicians. It is hoped that the.ro will bo no such re sult arise from this attempt to get at a free , fair expression of the choice of the better class of citi/.eiis. The probability is that Colonel John y. Chapman will bo placed in iiomimi- lion by the meeting this evening as mayor. Many of those who have signed the call favor him , and it is understood that he will accept the nomination , if it comes in the right way. Colonel Chap man was known for a long time as the republican leader here , out he has of late been out of politics , anil many demo crats have forgiven or forgotten what ever "oll'ensivo partisanship" appeared on his record in the past. In fact some of the staunclic.st democrats arc among those who most loudly call for him. It is whispoied that Captain Ilight and C. M. Hurl will have the nomina tions for judge of the supreme court and oily attorney divided between them. Captain lliglil will probably be given the nomination for judge leaving the other place to Ins younger brother at the bart although some of Harl's friends are urging him for tho.iudg-'iiip. The labor elenicnt lias been given to understand that it will bo recognised by the scjection of two or three candidates of their choosing. In view of this Mr. .John Ahlcs is being urged by some us one of the alderman. lie has been quite active in the democratic ranks , but either because he would not accept honors , or because of a lack of apprecia tion on the part of the democracy , for which he has so enthusiastically worked for years , he has never had the laurels placed on his brow. With plenty of time to attend to city matters , anil having gained mucli experience and information by his foreign' travels , his friends urge him as the right man now for the right place. His long service for thn workingmen also adds to the strength of his candidacy. Among \vorkingmcntruo workingmen - men , Mr. L. Kmnchan is prominent , and his merits would doubtless bo recognized at this time , but it is understood that ar rangements are being made for giving him a position in the mail service- lie is a worlliy man. who has been most un fortunate , a serious accident preventing him pursuing his previous occupation , lie is no elmrity subject , however , for his ability is acknowledged , ami ho would fill well any position to which ho would aspire. Among the workingmcn there is great anxiety to get city olncials elected who will see to it that the dangers of Hoods on the bottoms are done away with. The long , high dump of the Union Pacilic is looked upon by many as menacing tlio bottoms In case of Hood , there being no way for the water to pass through it. The present council lias made several moves , by resolutions , to get culverts built through this dumn , so that water could pass oil' , but nothing has been done. Now it is claimed ( hat in the building of the new bridge this _ danger will be still greater , as the bridge is to bo snorter and the fill greater. Tliero is a desire to support only such men as will pledge themselves to look after this , and protect the people by compelling some outlet to be made. The dirt filling is also to be drugged into tlio city contest. There arc still a great many and varied opinions as lo the improvmontfl by street filling and grad ing. The project for runiiing a tem porary track from the blull's to tlio bottoms toms and hauling dirt by cars has not died out altogether yet. Many of the workingincn arc greatly interested in such schemes , and they nro anxious to have men placed in ollicu wlio will pro tect , the interests of labor in these re- spoetH. The democrats have already called their primaries nnd convention , but whethei they will make a dillercnt ticket throughout can hardly be determined until after the convention to-night. Thu republicans have not called any convention yet , and their notion will doubtless be allected by the nominations made to-night. Judge James is said to liuvo given up the idea of capturing tlio democratic nomination for mayor , and lias his eyes on tlio woolsack of the .superior court. "Hob" Porcival's friends seem confi dent that ho will DC the democratic nomi nee for mayor. T. A. Kikland , the former county audi tor , is tall.ed of for city treasurer , as is also E. 11. Odull. There in little anxiety apparent about the oflli-o , however , it not being considered u very desir able one. Aid. Siedenlopf declares himself out of politics , so far as being willing to take any more public positions himself. Aid , ( Jeibo also is said to bo out of till races. Aid. Mynstor is said to have a willing ness to take tin ) ollico of judge of the su perior court , if it should bo forced upon nini. nini.Tho The race for tlio marshal's oflieo prom ises to bo a lively one. The present mar- hhal , Gnanolla , is a candidate , nnd J. A. Churchill , E. W. Jackson and A , S. Clongh are also named as probable can didates. Many nro rallying in favor of Jaokson , who has served in that position befoio , and ho will doubtless make it in- foresting if ho enters the race. Clough is favorably named by many , ho having been on tlio police force in years gone by , and being considered n good oflicer. I'YlrniU ot each /ealonsly , but quietly working. The suggestion is made tlmt for nldor- man at largo the second ward will lay special claims , as it has not had that honor. The fourth ward has had two , nml the first ward has been remembered. To the Edi tor of the Uin. : It is over n year uineo I iirst arrived in western Kansa , and I surmise n few lines in its favor will bo received with "Kansas ! " "grasshopper state , " "drouthy Kansas , " olc. , but if they would lay aside live conls worth of prejudice anil make us u visit they would ' agree with mo when I say Kansas' is one of tlio best htates in tlio union. True , Kansas did experience hard times , drouth , grasshoppers and hot winds , but every now state had , in its infancy , nniny ob stacles to contend against. Dnt Kansas is "out of the woods" now. and is offer ing good inducements to the immigrant. The county I live m ( Sho'idnn ) is prob ably the prcltie&t laying county In tlio stale. It hns live streams running across it , nil of which abounded with fish. Timber grows along their banks and wood costs about $1.50 per cord. Tno topography is ns jino ns it is possible to conceive. Look ing at tlio man you might imagine that wo truly mint live in n wild country way out on the frontier. Though wu nro near thu west line , yet one is hiirpriscd nt the enterprise unit intelligence of the people. Dut seven-tenths are from Iowa , nnd this is why things are bo. Last fall the population was hardly 500 , now it is 2,400. , The crops last year were good , this year splendid. About five years ago only a few cattlemen inhabited this section , and they thought it would bo many years before they would bo en croached upon by the influx of settlors. Not sohowever. Instead of avast , endless seeming waste of land , wo now find hap py homes , farms and school houses ( lot ted hero nnd there ; blue stem is waging war with buffalo grass ; sheep , cattle and horses occupy the range instead of buffaloes lees and coyotes , and instead ot tlio shift less Indian nn intelligent thrifty and human people livq hero. Truly thu rapid strides of civiliznlion nro wonderful ! The avorngo pioneer is full of pluck , tenacity and courage. It is ho who tights the battles for thu development of the country , it is ho who conquers the soil and subjugates it for tilling purposes. It is hero , on tlio frontier , where men worthy of their steel nro made , nnd though their faces uro bron/.cd , their hair not always Blooked or their clothes not the best lit , yet in their breasts beats n more honest and noble hei'rt than can bo found in many of his moro genteel appearing brothers of tie | city. Honor is moro common , hospitality moro general , nnd the impulse to standby one another moro thoroughly dltluscd in their blood. It Is no small undertaking to leave society , culture , refinement and comforts of the east to bravo the battles of the far west and e.nihiro tlio hardships. Hut the worst is passed. The experience is the moro amusing because the young man is connected with a linn who are the attorneys for the road on which the scene ocqnrrcd. Ho had been looking after a case at Underwood , and was so delayed that he did not reach Iho depot until Iho accommodation train was pulling out. He made a dashy run , nnd managed to climb on. 'Ho had not time to got a lickcl and had not provided him self with n pass. It was in vain that ho told the conductor who ho was or why ho had no lickct. The conductor could only go by the rules , which declared that no ono could ride on that train without a ticket. The attorney offered gold , but it was disdainfully spurned. Nothing but n pasteboard bearing thoi company's stamp would do. Not having this , the train was .stopped , while an attempt was made lo make truce. The conductor insisted on having the attorney got off , while Iho latter , with visions of a big dti in ago suit , refused , and proteslod against thu conductor pulling him oil' . Tlio sheriff happened to bo on board , and ho gave the wagirish advice lo Iho young attorney to lilt the con ductor , then the sheriff could arrest him and bring him along with him to the Hluffs ns n prisoner. Tlio nllorney in sisted that the conductor should run the train back to the station if lie wanted him to got off After > omo further pur ifying the ultornov concluded to get oil1 nnd walk back. Ho had not proceeded far on his journey when the slierilf inti mated to the conductor thai ho hnd got himself into n great scrape by making the man get off there , and Iho conductor concluded that he had not done just the legal thing , nnd he commnnceil backing up the tram , lie caught up witli the attorney , prevailed upon him lo get on board again , and then the train was baeked up to Underwood , where it waited until the attorney could get u ticket. Peace was restored , and tlio train eaino stoniniii" ; into Council Hlnlfs only fifteen minutes lale. In the Pacilic Medical Journal the case is reported of a youth who swallowed an open pen knife measuring three and a half inches. A common and unwise troulniRiit in such oases is to give castor oil , but Dr. Hutchings , wliohad charge of the ease , administered hearty meals of mush and buckwheat cakes , which im pacted the instrument and it was recov ered without having caused llio least injury.
