The general showing of the finances of
the city , as appearing from the auditor's
books , indicates that the present council
will this year spend for general city pur
poses , not including special a > , e.ssmeiits ,
from f'JU.OofJ to ifUO.OOO le s than was
spent by last year's council. It is claimed ,
on the other hand , that the present coun
cil has less to show , in proportion , for
what it has expended than did the old
council. About this time of the year
there is generally a breaking out of com
parisons , each council being anxious to
have the showing as favorable as pos
sible just before the : spring eleetionscome
on. Any comparison , disparaging to a
previous council , awakens opposition ,

The coroner's impie-t on the body of
Hughes was concluded yesterday , and
the verdict was reached that the tlecea'-eil '
came to hlr > death from a pistol shot fired
by a luuiu man 1-nown as Major Wil
liams , who fired it with premeditation.
This finding is in accordance with the
general belief , as based on the facts
as already mailo public. Tim peculiar
n licence of witnesses , and tint muddled
recollection of thoiu who claimed , im
mediately after the tragedy , to know
all about it , .has caused much
comment. It seems that snnio
of thi ) residents ot this city are veiy
anxious that the notorious "major"
hhould not be punNicd for thus shooting
down one of his kind , Just what rela
tion thc.-o citi/.ens have held to "tho

unlikely that some interesting revela
tions will yet bu made. The friends of

dcavors to thwart the prosecution , anil to
prevent the real facts from coming to
