The jiollH were the centers of interest
and yet there was lilllo there worthy of

which could not bo got at until the count

peacefully and there was little disorder-

was lo bo inferred from the mayor's
bombastic proclamation that every

Some of the saloons had their windows
and doors closely curtained more
closely than It would suuin was necessary
if Ihore was nothing going on inside , and
thorn were numerous voters who were
exercising tln'iraud'rajre power with stag
gering lunbu and muddled bruins. 'I'liu
work at the polls was not charaetcri/.ed ,
however , by any hpcoial c.xcltemunt or
hurrah. Fights , and evi n < piarrcln
seemed scarce , and the diaeu-sioiis and
chatlings ended mostly in wind without
blows.
The most disturbance .syeme.d to arlso
from the police themselves , and if it had
not been tor them there would have been
more of a cpiakcr time. At the 1'ourth
ward poll * t tis wi s particularly notice
able. One of the rcguKrs and a hpeeial
hinl a wordy war over the special arrestIng -
Ing a fellow on the charge of selling his

warranted. Then there was another
narr iw cseupo from a row between this
regular and another , tint latlpr oliarging
the former with roaring about his pe < f-

struck , but there was a lively scene for a
few minuti > s , the policeman churged with
being tinged with democracy Btoutly de

It will be an in ten sting feature of sorno

election day. The mayor pin on ypooi.il

the day working for home political party ,
let the party organisation pay them tor
their day's work , and the city can hardly

doing extra duty. These bills will be

seemed , however , generally conceded

It has been discovered that there wan a
fatal defect in the pas ago of the resolu
tion ordering Pearl street pived. The
records show that the lesolnthm was
not voted for by three-fourths of the
council , that number being necessary
when the work is not petitioned for by
two-thirds of the properly owners.
The.ro is no expectation of the paving
being done this fall , and perhi > ps not in
the life of the present council , as half of
the aldermen retire next f-pring , and
Koruo objection hu < i been raised about the
present council anticipating so much
work , which the next council must com-
jilete. On the. other hand it is urged I hat
if tlio work is ordered this fall and the
bidfi received now , much lower bids can
bo got , for the lucky contractor can get
out bis nuiteriiil llus winter and g ( t it
lus.s tli.m in Iho f-prino : . In view of nil
the u facts the council has rociiulod the
defective resolution , but has not aban
doned tlio idea of ordering the work
done , and probably at the next meeting
another resolution will bo pi'.iwd as
many of thu property o 'iors are in favor
of ordering the work. T.ie street is ono
of the most important in the oil > ami
needs paving biidly , and the contem
plated improvement will add greatly to
the valno ot the property.
