For the purpose of petting all the fat-Is

according to their skill anil Ihe desirabil

"Now , " said tliti speaker , who was n
tinner. "I earn $ ' . ' .7n n day , and out of

$ l.&i a week for our clothing , whiuli in

laid by $5 every week and at the end of
the year was exactly ? .00 ahead. "
The speaker thought a man could live
well oil $1J a week and support , at least
one child and a wife , provided the latter
is economical.
"Hut , " said he , "if you ain't got Iho
right kind of a wife the arrangement
won't work. I have been married twice.
My first wife was too young and didn't
know the value of a dollar , so 1 loft her.
J courted my Boeoml wife three years ,
and you can bet 1 know her well before 1

1 intend to go into business myself , some

"You ' ean't got along unless.yon have a

was a gas fitter. "I have njno children , "
said he , "and a brother-in-law living
with me , and earn $3.r > u a day. It takes
about $15 a week to sot our table , but 1
own my bouse , so that not , having to pay
rent. I am able to save a little. "
This man said that shortly after the
great lire he purchased an eight-room
house on filli avenue , near 28th .street ,
anil that out of his wages ho paid for the
property and maintained bis family in
good style. "Wo have till we want to

get a dollar or so , but I am lucky if she
gives me more. Wo are saving people ,
mil you've got to be saving these times if
you e\pcct to get ahead. "
"A man ought to bo able , " saitl a
carpenter earning ? : J a day , "to net his
table for at least three children , himself ,
and his wife , for $3 a week. The other
household expenses , not counting on

Again the virtues of the "good wifo"
were hounded. ' 'You innM h.ivo a good

"I never drinlf at all , " said Iho fore

A wood-worker employed in the same

Music KcvivcH Memories.
Detroit Free Press : We were oil'Cape

Sunday evening in August. The I'r.it '

the starboard gunwale , while a group of
well-bred voting men. returning to
Charleston from llndr summer vacation ,
were singing "In the Gloaming , " " .John

this last song , he stopped talking and
joined in ( he singing. When through he
said , "Nothing takes hold of mo like

following incident :
"When u very htllo fellow , T did som -

My mother look me on her lap and

and then the family joined witli her in

lightning reveals objects in n dark
night , that scene in my Masnachusctts

was this the way that prayer was being

and coaxed , but all lo no purpose. I left
them iiml walked in. The house was

est building , everything is upon that
largo and liberal plan so agreeable to
those who have to live here. I do not
know Col. Upham , bil : lie must be a large-
minded man , and known just how n poM
should be built. I hope the government
will re-member this , and when ithas other
posts to build send Upham. Army arch
iteeture is , as a rule , the meanest , in
the world , ami when 1 think of the places
and houses where we have had to live in
out west it makes me sick. Low ceilings ,
little eramped-up rooms , bad ventilation ,
small barracks where the men were
crowded together like n herd of sheep-
ting was the rule in army buildings , and
the exccption.-jfWtTc few and far between.
There is nothing of the kind here. The
barracks are large , and every man has
room to move about ; the ceilings are
high and the ventilation perfect. In the
ollicers' houstjs the rooms are large , the
ceilings high.imd the buildings all well
ventilated. There is no cheap paper on
the walls lo hide tJie cracks and dirt , but
the walls tire pn-uited and the rooms
solid and clean. The houses have the
ajipearauee , inside tit least , of city resi
dences , and tlio evidences of comfort and
convenience appear tlm moment one
opens tlie wide ddors. How Upham did
so much work herC with so little money
i.s a pn//.lc ; possibly he did what so many
ollicers do helped himself and relict !
more on the resources of the country
than the appropriations. A good saw
mill : id :5M : o.r 401) ) willing mcn'are a
great help in building a post. Many
hands , dropping eyi-n a pebble each ,
soon make a great pile.
