tlio Iragio fate of Hamilton , united to
ituiko it an cvunl long to bo remembered ,
probably never to bo forgotten in Ibis
country. Doth liml fought gallantly for
inilopundenco in tlio rovoluUoniiry war ;
Itiirr was vice prc-sidont of tlio United
SlutuH ; Hamilton was one of ( ho frainura
of thu constitution , and as secretary of
tlio treasury under Washington , had orig
inated mid established our financial sy.s-
tent. They were bitter political rivals.
Tlio poignancy of Hnrr's defeat for the
presidency by Jenbrson in 180I , to wliich
Iliiinilton largely contributed by his un
compromising hostility to him , was
greatly intensified by'bat ( fact. HIMT
was supporlud by tlio federalists. Hamil
ton was a federalist , and mip-
pcirled Jollbrson , who was the
candidate of tlio republicans , and his
huildily wont so far as to assume thu
nature of personal assaults upon liuiTS
characlor Thus tlio warfare botwuon

Hamilton gave a great deal of provoea-

of tlie combat , lie continued to bo unspar

ollens vo langiiagi ) reached Ins ears.
Candid judgment must admit that HIIIT
was more circumspect in his treatment
ot , and language towards , his antagonist ,
than was the latter towards him. Such
were the feelings existing between these
men whitn the ovoiting election cam
paign for governor of New York came
on in tlio summer of 1801 , between Aaron
Hurr and ( Jen. Morgan Lewis. The par
ticular cause of the challange from Uurr
was a communication wliich appeared in
a paper jpnhlished in New York eitv , tlio
New 'i ork Mirror , and signed Dr.
Charles D. Cooper , in which was used
the tollowing language : "I could detail
tooti a still more despicable opinion
which dun. Hamilton lias ovnrossud of
Mr Hnrr- " which was , that ' Hamilton
and Judge Kent had declared liurr a
dangerous man , not lit to bo
trusted with the reins of power. "
It will be obsenod that the ofluiiMvo
language did not appear in any publica
tion or speech made by Hamilton , or in
any manner authori/.ud or sanctioned
him. Ho could very properly have an
swered Col. Burr's demand for satisfac
tion b > saying he was not icsponsiblo for
the publication made by Dr. Coopur ;
that the latter had no right to impute
such sentiments to him ( Hamilton ) , and'
had no right to publish such senlimenU
us coming Irom him , and that ho utterly
disavowed any connection with , or 10-
spoiisihility tor the publication in fjnes-
t.on Beyond that ho could not reeog-
nr/.e the right , of anyone to question him.
Such an answer would have relieved li m
of all tesponsibility , oven according to
the code of tlio duello , and would prob
ably have removed the ditliciilty.
It Burr called anyone to an account in
eonnec lion w.tii the matter , it should
have bi-en Ir Cooper , the man who pub
lished the oliiioxiouseommiiiiiealionovcr
Irs own signature. The use ol Cicn.

using it as a means of attack upon IJmr ,

conscieiiee did its pi-ilVcl uork. ho must

with its latal terminatioir for ono ot the
part.c.p.ints , and the political and mor.il

A long correspondence w.is carried on

Burr's pistol had planted its fatal wound
and Iho illustrious statesman and soldier

'And ' from that hour it were better lor

ilton evidently discharged his weapon at
random , tor Iho ball struck a supliug

head , lie declared ho d d not intend to

Ho entertained these convictions , and

.Senator Cletnng , of Alabama , a few
years before the war , licreely ass.illed , in
a speech in the "onatp U. Barnwoll Hhett ,
of South Carolina , and expected a chal
lenge ; but not receiving any taunted the
latter with having failed to vindicate
himself by the code Senator Illicit ,
southern liro-e.itmg statesman as ho was ,
replied , to Ids honor bo it said , " 1'ot
twenty years L haVe been a member ol
the Church of Christ. I cannot , and will
not , dishonor my religious profession.
I frankly confess that I fear CJod , ami
that I fear him more than man. " That
wa.s the answer of a man of bravo con
victions , who would not cower before a
false public sentiment , but boldly dared
to hurl his dolianuo against it. Had
Ham lion taken a similar position , ho
would have saved a noble life to the ro-
ptlbliu , and would have given to ( ho
world an act of moral horo'sm and
grandeur that wotdd have added now
lustra to bis increasing and enduring
famo.
'Iho public feeling in New York and
Now Jersey.towards Burr was such that
bo dnemed it prudent to nut himself ho-
yond the boiinderies of tnoso stains , and
no retired lo I'hiladelph'a , at lirst , and
then proceeded to Florida , and remained
there , only returning in time to preside
over llio senate at tholr "convening in
December. It was a lamentable specta
cle , that of the vice-president of Iho
United States lleeing before ( ho public
wrath evoked by the crime ho had com
mitted. Ho Wius indicted for murder in
New York > and also in Now .Jersey.
There was much controversy at the time
a.s lo whether ho should be brought lo
trial in the latter or former state ; though
it is not clear to the writer how ho could
bo tried for murder in New York , when
the crime was committed in Ninr Jersey.
The letters written by Barr during Hi s
period to his daughter Theodosia , in re
gard to the contioversy , and the indict
ment , furnish a pretty clear insight into
his char.iclcr. In ono let tor bo wrote
thus : "The subject of dispute is , wlneli
state , Now Jersey or New York , .shall
have the honor ot banging the vice pres
ident. * * You shall h-ire duo
notice of tbo time and place. Wherever
it may bo you may rely on a great con
course of company , much lyayoty , and
many rare sights , such as the lion , elephant -
phant , eto. " in another loiter bo wrote
to Theodosia , who naturally had the
nn\ittv ) that a daughter would fool for
her father over whose bead an indict
ment for murdtr wa.s impending , ami for
whom , perhaps , the gallows was waiting :
"You tio.it will ; too much gravity the
New Jersey aifair. It should oo consid
ered a farce , and you will yet see it ter
minate .so a.s to leave only ridicule and
conremnt for its abettors , " ( those who
bad procured his indictment for the
murder of Hamilton , and were trying to
bring him to trial ) . The trial , however ,
never took place.
