Arsenic is a deadly drug with which
everyone is more or less familiar , and
yet its use for commercial purposes is
very general and often dangerous. It
enters into nearly all forms of green
paint anil coloring. tnd may even bo
seen daubed on candies. It is a compo
nent part of > innumerable "face washes"
aud "complexion fluids , " and many a
foolish -woman handles it freely every
day. In appearance arsenic is not unllko
tho' lighter shades of corn-mt-al. The
tincture of aconite root , a drug in com
mon use and very poisonous , closely re
sembles brandy in appearance and has
before now been mistaken for that stun-
'ant. ' _ There are cases of accidental
poisoning from this source.
Mention has been made of poisonous
face-washes nnd sprays. The recollec
tion is btill fresh' of the sad case of Mrs.
Ubby , whoso husband's mysterious tlis
appearance vexed the public mind some
.weeks ago , The unhappy woman believ-
'ing her husband to have been foully
dealt with or at any rate ovi-rwronglit
by the harrowing mystery of his disap
pearance gave way under the strain nnd
became a suicide. Thu fluid which she
poured down her throat was wlmt is
known as vapo-crosolino a spray designed -
signed for no more harmful purpose than
Iho healing of a fcoru throat. There was
next to no clianco of error in this case ,
bi'causo nearly the whole of a largo bottle
tle was needed to sisstiro death.
The king of poisons at least among
those familiar to the drug tradu is prussic -
sic acid. The commercial form ot this ,
interesting fluid is hydro-cyanic acid ,
which is a solution into which but 2 pur
cent of the original enters , as against H8
per cent of water. Ami yet two drops is
a maximum dose of the solution on tlio
hitlu-r sitlu of danger. A small bottle of
undiluted.aoitl thrown into thu midst of
n crowded auditorium might decimal o
tlio audience , forovon its fumes arc dead
ly to a degree . Tlio odor which arises
from the solution is not dissimilar to thut
of burnt almonds.
