Visit to the NnUworks How the Nails are Turned Out A reporter looking about for news , droppjd In at the nsllworks" South Slxtoonth ttreot yesterday , and had an In- toroatlng talk with Mr. Inner acd his assistant , Mr. 0. J. Sullivan about the present work of'tho factory. About 125 mon a fnll complement are employed lu the nallworks at present , working fall tlmo. Four hundred and twenty-five kcgi of nails ranging in slzo fron the omalloat artlelo to the meat enormous splko , are turned out each day. There la & fnll demand at ptoacnt for nails , and there la no tronblo at all In disposing uf them as .fast an they are turned out. The region supplied Is prin cipally wrst of the Missouri through * nut Nebraska , Wyoming , Idaho , Utah , and tlio ether torn- lorloa. It is to bo berne In mind that there are bat three nail factories west of the Mississippi river , ono In Omaha , ono in Pueblo , Col , , and one in Oakland , Oil , , so that the territory to bo supplied by each ono la very largo. This is especially true as very few nail factories cast of the Mississippi river do any business In this half of tlio conti nent. The nail factory here is consequently quently In possession of Its full ahara of the western trade , and la rushing its work at present to meet the demands which that trade In now enforcing. THE MIOOESS OF MAKING NAILS. Mr. Sullivan very kindly volunteered to guide iho tcrlbu through the factory , ao nj to glvo him an Inelght Into the in teresting methods of nail-making. The nall-worka consist of the rolling mills , cooper shops and blacksmith shop. The most Interesting procenaes very naturally nro canialnoi in the first named department. In the fuat place the bar Iron , cr rail ironln used principally lu the manu facture of the nalla. These bara or rails are fed into a hugo cat , iug iniehlno or shoirs , which divides them into lengths cf about six feet , thrro Inches , These bara are then taken and placed together sir or eight iu a bunnh bound with wires and passed Into a furnsco whom they are heated to the welding point. The boated maaa is then paised throngh a sot of rollers , four time' , which pro cess converts it Into bars abont two nnd a half inches thick and several feet long. These bars are again reheated after which they are cut up Inso smaller blocks. Theaa blocks , nftor balng duly heated In the furnace pats through an- otner sot of roller , making six paszes , in all and come out very much flattened and elongated a two or three feet block of Iron being thatched into a thin shoot fiftoau or twenty loet long and abant eix or eight Inches wide. Thesa sheets are of differ ent thicknesses according to the thick ness of the S'Z9 of nalla Into which they are to bo converted. The shoots are then passed Into a powerful cutting ma- chlno which divides them into small slabs of different wldthi , according to the lengths of the different nails which are to bu turned out. For instance , a slab which is to be made into nails ono inch long , la cut np into ploos ono inch wide ; n slab to bo divided Into two-inch nails is out np Into two inch widths , etc. The procois of nail making is completed In another step which h porhnps the mast difficult of all to do- ccribe These small widths are taken to tto "nailer , " a machine having a pair of ( fcarp "j wa , " which divide the slab into small sections exactly the slzo of the nail. Each of those small widths are then urcs'od Into thu proper obapo in the lower part of the "nailer , " and a heavy hammer of peculiar shape hits It a blow , which Instantly "puts a head on it , ' and the nail paisea out bulow Into a basket or pan ready for its mission in the world. Those "nailera" are graded in alza and power according to the size of the nail to bo made. The larger the machinery , of course , the larger and thicker the slr.bs which nro fed into it , and the larger the nail which is made. The big 8-Inch gplko machines are moguls in size com pared with the smaller ones , used to turn out the small chroo-ponny ] nails. It Is a curtouo fact which may bo noted in this connection , that to make j mils ranging In eizo from the olx-ponny article to the spike , the slabs first have to bo heated to a rod boat before befog fed Into the nailer , whllo in miking nalla from the three-penny slza to the six penny slza , they are passed into the ma chine In on unheated condition. The reason of this Is that In cutting the larger slzss the strain on the machine la as great that unless the metal weio first honied It oould not bo handled. This , In brief , Is the process of nail- nuking. It Is an Interesting one from the Grit step to the last , and u vleit to the Factory will well repay ono for the trouble. j _ _ _ A Otior t 8 doty.
