- XXT ' "I I fill THlii'DAILY BEE-SArXJUDAY SEPTEMBER 10 1885 THE DA1L1 BEE. Saturday Morning. Snptember 19 LOOAL BBEVITIEB. hieut. Uook , of the Fourth cavalry , passed thiongh yesteiday on ha ! way to Atltonn. Marriage Ihonies were issued to Hans Jot in and ChiitUana Timanson , Joseph Knlp and Mrs 12 A Deyoo , MM. 0. Bond , general stores , at Wllber , failed Thursday. The Omaha trade went there laet nutht and a settlement was effected. Work commenced , yesterday , on the curb of Sooth Thirteenth street and the bringing to grade of the street railway track. Judge McOulloch issued letteri of admin istration jcstorday to John Klrkland , m the matter of the oalato of William Klrhlnnd , deceased. The case against Oapt. Fitzgerald , of the clccttto light workp , ' who was arrested some time ago on complaint of George Knoto , for pointing a revolver at him , has been dis missed , It baa been auggestod that the Omaha Bicycle club would do well to add a 0 or 10- mile foot raws to their programme , on the oc casion of their field meeting In October , There ate a number of runnora hero , who could furnish an Interesting exhibition of ipood. ; Mcears. Ellis & Oo. will have a grand concert this afternoon at tholr Franz Falh beer hall , 1213 Douglas street. Free lunch and music will bo conspicuous , and the cele brated Fcanz Fallc beer , it is needless to say , will be used In largo quantities. Came early , and avoid the tush. The tenth monthly social dance of the Arion waa hold at Gorman ! hall Thursday evening. A largo number of the members with their ladies were present. At 12 o'clock n fine supper waa served and nn enjoyable time was had by all. The guoats from abroad were : Mlenea Ida Kndebrock and Carrie IlccV , of St. Joseph ; Mica llittor , of Spring field , 111. ; Mlaa Maggie , Messrs. Gus and John Kpenotor , of Council Bluff * , and Mr. Rcdlck , of Kansas City. Joseph Liska , wife and two daughters , the youngest fourteen , arrived in Omaha Thurtday evening after n weary tramp of three days from Nebraska City. The passage of the family had been paid from Bohemia to Niobrora , Nob. , but through a mistake in names they were hauled to Nebraska City , several hundred miles from their destination. Without money , friendless , and unable to speak English , their only alternative was to trndga to this city , where they were kindly cared for by their countrymen , An Interesting Case. Judge Wakeloy was busy yes'orday la a trial of the caao of M. Hollmann & Co , against J. W. Davis and othcra. The cato la ono of rather Interesting features. It geoniB that In 1808 , J. W. Davla , who waa at that tlmo a prominent railroad contractor , invested some of his money In a largo farm , which ho deeded ever to hi wife. A short tlmo afterwards , through some misunderstanding , it la claimed , thi Union PaclDc railroad company declined to pay Davis on a large contract which he hud undertaken. Ho became involved and his creditors scooped downnpon him Ono of the suits brought against him sub- teqnently was that of M. Hellman & Co , for § 3,104 05 , which Is now on trial The plalntlffi charge that Davis deeded his property to his wife in order to OB capo payment of debt , while the de fendant claims that the transfer wai made before the dobU wore Incurred. I Is farther claimed by the plalntifls Ihv the property waa mortgaged to James M , Woolwortb , aa a measure of precaution against any action of aeizuro which th plaintiffs might institute. Examining Toncliors , The city board of examiners composed of John Kusb , W. W. Kojsor and Mrs Sndborongh , irore engaged the past two days In examining Mlta Sheldon and several other teachers who have as yo failed to secure certificates to teach in the city schools. The caao of Ms ( Sheldon Is more than ordl narlly interesting from the fact that In her case a question arose aa to whether a state certificate mua be received without question by the city ichool board , aa entitling her to teach in the Omaha schools wlthon further examination. It was claimed by the local sohool authorities that in issuing 4ho certlfioito ' all the provisions of the law were not compiled with. This v'ow of the cato la that o' State Superintendent ont Jou.ee , aa shown by a letter written by hint a few dsya ago to Secretary Co noyor. The examination of Mies Sheldon and the otbor toaohera waa fairly satisfactory and the examining board will probably decldo to isiuo cottilioiUs. Hundreds of valuable articles are go ing cut dally on oidtra received through the mails by the Kmpiro Mills Tea Co , , 1403 Douglas Street. Parties in the countiy w { thing to avail theineolvos o the rppcrtnnliy to got an elegant gold watch , a valuable diamond ring , or tilty dollars In money In addition to their dollar's worth of delicious tea or coffee , thould send In tholr orders at once , aa the tlmo for packing aonvnlra In these cntis is rapidly drawing to a close , when theeo choice goods will bo sold by our agent at the same prtco , but without oth er articles In the etna than tea or coffee. AH Qnlot Among Union Fuclflc Em- plojca No CoiupUlntB the Company Mr. O l- Views. Yesterday morning the Union Pacific employes the full length of tha system and in every department , with thn smsll exception of the troublous spirits of Rock Springs , went quietly to work and throughout the day remained quiet ly at their posts. Thus far at least , the rumsrod strike la not forthcoming. The reporter for these oDlnmns visited yesterday evening n number of prominent Knights of Lib or and was nt the shops when the day's work clojod. The Knights are decidedly non-communloMlvo saying Mioy have nothing to aiy pro or oon. The shopmen , however , talked freely enough and if a strike ia brewing they are beyond doubt Ignorant of it. They oxproES themselves M on the best of terms with the compa ny , but declare a sentiment against the return of the cooliea at Rock Spring ! . There la. n good deal of nonaonso bolng telegraphed over the country. If any ono takes the palna to look oloeoly into the question and iutoirogate the employes , the conviction will bo forced upon him that it will provo a difficult task to Incite dleaentiona to a striking point. At Rock Springs the whlta minors are out ; eixty of them have been discharged and the ro- malndor Including the engineers , refuse to fire up for the operations of the von- tllatora and motor power. With thla ex ception all la sorono. MB. OALIAWAY'S VIEWS. General Manager Galloway gave an audience to a BEG reporter yeateiday. The chief is half nettled at whnt ho deems ridiculous throats , and Is firm in his posi tion. Ho conversed freely and oxproaccd himself emphatically. " 1 am fint and foremost for law and order and this wo will maintain if the last resources have to be drawn so to do. Affilra have oumo to a pretty ptsj if a company can not manage its own road. The employes have had sufficient evidence of our de sire for fair dealing to thoroughly under stand ua If they ohooao. I have dis charged sixty men the loaders of the riot at Rack Springs and have returned the Chinamen thcro. Never BO long as I am manager will ono of thoio men be re- employed nor shall I submit to any In- tlmmldatlon through which It m y besought sought to expel the Ghlnaznon. I will not tolerate association with a gang of roughs and murderers , a hoodlum crowd worse in over ? respect than the Chinese nor will I permit dictation , ex cept from the proper source , upon any course of astlon. Good order and peace shall bore established ; the Rock Springs mines will bo operated or something of the most unpleasant nature will happen. Men are already being dispatched to the sono to fill the places of the dncontentn and work will be promptly returned. I am so firm in my resolve , supported aa I am by the consciousness of right and the approval of President Adams and the di rectory , that I will not yield although every man In the read's employ should leave. "A good deal of , thla nonsenne must bo stopped. It la Inciting and fostering a communistic spirit which will some day remit calamitously to the entire nation. However , I urn confident that the agita tors are working upon a refractory sub ject when they took to Influence thu force of the Union Pacific railway to the adoption of any of their rash measures. The men too well appreciate the situa tion. When we keep in employment during these hard times two thousand more men than wo need , reducing the houra at tholr own request , at an expense to ua of not lesa than § 40,000 for new machinery thua necessitated , it is Idle to presume upon any ill feeling- toward the company from the men. Iho entire mechanical and operating forcea of the road appre ciate thla fact and I believe a strike more than improbable. But come if it must , It will provo unavailing , I assure you. THE GOVERNMENT DIRECTCM. The government directors of the Union Pacific are at Rock Springs attending the Investigation now in progress. A report from them to the Interior department waa wired through yesterday. It Is not permitted here that its contents shall bo dlvu'ged , and it will reach the publla only from the department Itself. A Union Pacific official , however , said that the government representatives supported the action of the company. AT AHMY HEADQUARTERS. . "No. " , said Acting Adjutant Hall to a reporter yesterday , "so far everything la peaceful to-day at Rock Springs. " He handed the acrlbo a telegram from Com manding General McCook aa follows ; "Chineie consuls have to-day looked ever tha field of the disturbances , llava exhumed the remains of tholr countrymen killed by the ilotera and put them In rough coding. , They have alao wade tome progress In taking narra tive nUtnmenU from white and Chinese inlnoru. Other officers of the annv and of the Union Pacific railroad extend the consuls kindly attention and sympathy. Tlia govern ment directors ot the Union 1'aclGc railroad are here , also Gov. Warren of Wyoming and it looks now oa If a thorough investigation of the causes leading to the riot would be mado. United States District Attorney Campbell of Wyoming , will ba hero to-morrow. " Gen. Howard , when questioned about the situation had very little to it y don't want to peso aa an alar m In atld with a giim smile , "and I shall have nothing to say fora few days. " KETUUN OP THE CHINESE. ST. Louis , Sept. 17. The Globe- Democrat's Rawllns ( W. T. ) special says ; Tbo fact that United States troops have been and are being naed to herd Chinese slaves waa demonstrated beyond the shadow of doubt hero to-day. The Chi nese testified that they were kidnapped and brought hero against their wishes , and that they were put aboaid thu ciri at Eranston , and told that they would bo taken to California , The engine ol iholr train was attached to Its western and to aid in the deception , but after the heathens had been crowded into freight ctra the ouqlno waa quickly tranc- Ftrrod to the eastern end , ana before the Chinamen knotr what had Keen done the train was eiuouto to Rock Sprli'gj.
