A very large proportion of the business men
in this country began the year with the belief
that we had soon the end of haM times and
that there would be nn immediate improvement -
mont in trade. Same of those who looked for
improvement lost their courage bocaute very
little gain was perceptible during the spring.
Now that mid-summer is past and wo are on
the verge of the fall and winter trade , It is
well tolnquira if the prediction of the new
year was substantially correct. Prices have
apparently touclnd bottom , and aside from
the bad business methods , which are always
causing failures , tlnre is no reason for insolv
ency. Last fall we were just emerging from
"bard times , " No ono could tell whether the
reason wai patt and great anxiety prevailed
In every p t of tha countiy. A great many
failures occurred during the fall and first
quarter of the present year , but more recently
the Insolvency list hai grown shorter and
there have been ( till res.
Bofar as statistics are obtilnable , the tur-
p'us of manufactured commodities has baon
consumed , and most industries are now at a
point where they will be governed directly by
the demand. The condition of the farmer gen
erally mid the western farmers In particular is
much better than was supposed possible six or
eight month ] ago. Tha farmtra will ba free
buyers of staple goods this fall and will have
ready money to meet payments.
This state of affairs will make
trade in the smaller towns much better , nnd
tha wholesale trade and the manufacturers
will be greatly benefitted , Price * are already
stronger In nearly all branches of trade and
there It a general upward tendency ,

mill stocks , and it Is estimated that the secu
rities of the Fall River carapiules are worth
