The day broke yesterday aa It ha
for a vroek past , through leaden , gray
clouds that portended rain. However ,
cheered by the predictions of the signal
service , largo nnmbora braved the throats
of weather and the raw wind , and visited
the grounds , making thus the first show
ing of a crowd slnco the fair opened ,
The rain did not como , and during the
ontlro forenoon the thermometer and
barometer roao together , the winds
allayed and the clou is thinned nntll just
on the noon hour n rift was made in
their filmy banks and a patch of bine- ,
big enough to make n Dutchman's
brooches , peered through. With this
certain aisuranoo the throngs of visitors
and residents In the city began pouring
out to the grounds in every available con
veyance , afoot and by all possible means
of transit. Yesterday an immense
crowd was on the grounds and the races
and other exhibitions are witnessed by
th ociands.
The track is In surprisingly good'condl-
tion am ! under any circumstances would
bo called fair.
Resuming the detail rounds of depart
ments , the hog and sheep exhibits were

, . The race between the two gropt trot
ters , Phyllis and Joe Davis , which 1703
to have occurred to-day , has been post
poned until Friday. The first with a
. record of 2:15 : and the second with a
f credit of 2:17 : and the confidence of his
i owner that ho can cat far under that ,
will make a beautiful struggle for the
mastery. The heavy pnrso of $3,000
backed by the oiler of $500 , made by
the Commercial Association of Omaha If
a heat is trotted below 2:19 : , Insures a
great raco.
OTILDREN'S DAT , SATURDAY.
The society Is determined that the
children shall have an opportunity te en
joy the fair , and as they were deprived
of that pleasure by the weather on Mon
day , the invitation will bo again tendered
them for Saturday.
THE KACES.
A well filled grand stand greeted the
first races which the bad weather had
made possible since the opening of the
fair. The afternoon was all that could
bo dosrod ; the aun shining brightly
from an almost cloudless sky , and
brecr.B stirring just fresh enough to bo
Invigorating. The track , however , was
tfar from perfection. A broad strip about
halt the width of the track from the f enco
* 111 toward the center had boon dressed Into
fair shape , but all the work In the world
would never In such short tlmo bring the
Inside Into condition , and the conrso
against the polo was muddy in many
places. Yet fairly good time was made over
Itand at the end of yesterday's races
the ground was In such condition that a
night of working and good weather will
bring It in prlmo shape for to-day.
THE THREE MINUTE IIACE.
The following started , Dixie Boy and
Black Diamond drawing oil : Annlo T ,
, „ ch m , John Simpson , North Platte ; Long
1 Luoy , r m , J. M. Bonnoll , PJattaraouth ;

blk g , 8. R. Johnson , Omaha ; Bay
Frank , b g , Adam Thompson , Omaha.
The horaea took stations from the polo In
the above order.
First Heat It Boomed Impossible to
got them off and they dashed to the
scratch at each call , In the most ragged
shape , returning every tlmo to squander
several minutes sponging and rigging
harness , despite the counter order of the
startor. At last after ocorlng nlno times ,
they caught the word and made away
well together , Annlo T. against the
polo , cut out tbo work , reaching the
quarter with McKonsio at her wheel ,
iforo the little mare skipped end the
black forged ahead. Over the up turn they
came , Annie T. prancing for fun , while
little Manhattan sped past tio-
Ing for the load with McKonsio I
as they oamo the homo stretch as I
lihoy daahed under < tbe wlro and hastened
away on the second round. Annlo T ,
who was regaining the lots of her .break ,
closed up to an oven load at the three- 1

and Manhattan seventh , set back from

Second heat There was a good deal of
nonsense In th's heat aa in the first. The *
driven Boomed reluctant to glvo in their It
name * , and it took repeated scratching to w
get a etirt. Bey Frank set the example ai
fcv catting .Annie. T out of the pole and t !
the lead before the turn was reached. At
the half Frank was still firat , with the
chestnut mare at his sldo and Black Bob
catching his mud at close range , Annlo
T hero loat her footing and fell back into
the crowd. Passing the half at the grand
stand Bay Frank pulled out for a
safe lead , which ho held to the finish ,
although Annia broke on the up turn in
on effort which promised to glvo her a
front place. Bay Frank passed under
the wlro throe lengths ahead , Black Bob
second , Annlo T third , Bob Bowles
fourth , Long Luoy fifth , Manhattan sixth ,
McKonzto seventh. The Omaha horse had
too much galloping to do. Time , 2:44J. :
The pools in this heat were the same
as the first.
Third Heat On the fifth sooro they
caught the word. This heat was an
other triumph for Bay Frank oven more
splendid than before. Taking the firat
from the jump , ho hold the place without
a break in step for the full mlle , winning
by a distance ton lengths safe. It was a
beautiful performance , and the crowds
cheered the bravo animal lustily. Annie
T , behaved excellently , bnt indulged in
disastrous skips. She however , won a
good second , MoEenslo third , Black
Bob fonrth , Manhattan fifth , Long Lucy
sixth , Bob Bowles distanced through
his misbehavior. Tlmo , 2:42 : } .
Bay Frank and Annlo T , at $5 , ruled
against the field at same.
Fourth heat After a great deal of
foolishness on the part of the jockeys
working for advantage , and alx attempt !
to got away , they caught the send eft' .
Bay Frank , now in high prlmo favor with
both the spectators and speculators , again
cut out the work taking a load at the half
which loft a staring gap batwoen him and
thn following field. The tusalo for next
best was taken up by Annlo T , , McKen-
slo and Manhattan. On the up stretch
the bravo little mare gained ground ,
when , by a surprising burst of spaed ,
Black Bob shot forward from the roar to
the van and flow under the wire for second
end place a length ahead , amid great ap
plause. Bay Frank won the heat and
race , Black Bob second in the boat ,
Annlo T. third , McKonalo fourth , Lonj ?
Lucy fifth , Manhattan sixth. Tlmo ,
2:42j. :
Bay Frank sold at $5.00 against the

at the three-quarter , lost the load to

First heat About a dozen scores and
several lectures from the starter were re
quired to get the word. Almeta lost the
advantage of her position to Bohemian

the race the brown mare had a walk
away. It was then a struggle for second
place with Almeta holding a steady advantage -
vantage throughout although Maud B ,
Springfield Belle and Ira M , crowded
hard at times for honors. The remain
