Yesterday the work of tearing down
the old court honso waa commenced , and

John Teeter , John Campbell and
David Lyons were fined in the police
court yesterday for being too drank to
bo at large , The last named claimed
that ho had got drank in Omaha and

by the "Unmpty Damply" tralo , as ho
called It , and that ho had boon robbed
olthor in Omaha or Council Blnffi , ho
could not tell whloh , for , as ho frankly
acknowledged , ho was too drunk to know.
The now evening paper came very near
getting a good start yesterday. Several
trato cltizans whoso private characters
had boon ruthlessly attacked wont to the
office with the avowed intention of get
ting justlco , or threshing the editor.
Luoklly for the public there had boon so
many changes In the editorial force of
one , that the paper waa not given the
notoriety it has boon sighing for , there
not proving to bo any responsible editor
to whip.
The saloon moa , or rather aomo of
them , do not propose to submit to the
now method of whipping the devil around
the dtump , and propose to fight the cases
brought against thorn for keeping open
after 11 o'clock at night. The purpose
of thoao uultn Is to force them to pay the
required license of $25 a month , the pol
icy being to worry these who refuse or
neglect to pay nntll they will submit for
the aako of peace. If they fight thoao
cases , as they now threaten , the city may
conclude that if the saloon men will
neither pay Hcanw or obay police regula
tions , they hid hotter bo abut up alto
gether.
There was a lively tlmo caused In WIes
& Clausen's ntoro yesterday ay an Irate
woman. She had sent her llttlo girl to
the atoro to got some potatoes , and they
being out of the kind wanted , ono of the
clerks insisted on retaining the basket
which the llttlo girl bad , and which bare
the name of the firm , proving to his mind
that the basket was ono belonging to the
store. The woman , on being Informed
by her llttlo girl , proceeded to the store
with blood In her eye , and she talked so
loud and BO hot that for the sake of psaco
ono of the firm handed her tha basket ,
whereupon aho proceeded to elap him
over the head witb U. One of the clerks
then ordered the woman to go , and ai
aha did not feel inclined to go before aho
got a good ready , the clerk taok hold of
her arm end showed her the way out.

arm , and aho has now filed a complaint
against him for assault and battery , and
proposes to finish the fight In court.

the democratic candidate for governor ,
