THE DAILY BEE-SATURDAY , AUGUST 29 tb8o. LINCOLN. The City's ' Morality as Viewed from Local Standpoint , Tlireo Convicts Escape from thi State Penitentiary , The Inn no Aajliim Anil KB mont The 1'olltloM Pot St to Porsonnli. AT THE OAPJTAU TIIK CITY'S MOlULtTY. The mayor recently in a public speech mtdo n protestation that ho desired thi city cloanncd from all moral Impnriliea and tint his endeavors had all boon In that direction. The records batd'y ' bear his honor ont in his remarks , for accord ing to the oldett roeideuta there haa never boon n time trhon there wiaroally n greater number of disorderly places ia the city than at present. It must not bo charged that the mayor la responsible for all tula because it would bo doing that gentleman an Injustice , bat there are things which ho could remedy which ho docs not do. Within the past few months there have boon at least throa places ntarted which , ostensibly respectable , are the greatest pitfalls in the city , in which young and Innocent glrln may ba on- trappad. Ono pl&oo on T nlh street , rrhlati will not bo dualgmtcd , ia nn as- aignatlrm house of the most pronounced type. Under a thin and gauzy tubtotfug the proprietor endeavor * to hide fromth oyea of the authorities the character o hla basilicas. The rooms upstairs ere lii' charge of n woman who will lob them whenever desired. Many young girls just entering womanhood ara thus led astray , when otherwise the opportunity which la hero offered being ont of the way they might have remained virtuous and grown into useful womanhood. Tno house , or rather store , In which thisjiofnrloua business la carried on , la owned by a prominent jndgo of this city , a man who Is now holding an Important judicial position In Lancaster county. II la clarliablo to suppose that ho does not know whab kind of people ha la renting to , but now that lie haa notlco , there will bo no cxcuco for him not to turn the prntent oconpnnta out. It la presumed that the mayor , If ho la attending strictly to the business of hi ) position , knows those things , for there are ceitainly lota of pcoplo ready and anxious to Inform him of them. Thcso pi iocs here named are but fa ? latcd caoea , and disorderly women are in creasing in.tho city at an alarmingly rapt rate. It IB time to call a halt , and thd mayor ii the proper person to do ihi&o Lincoln haa a hiqbly moral class of cit. Izena , who are deeply chigrlnnod at tho- presant state of things , cud they call for nn Immediate reform. Private assigna tion houses and plaooa of that character ohould bi suppressed at one ? , and Major Burr should at once start hla pollcu on the track of all euch phca0. If any Ignorance of their location ia oxpraeaad br cither the mayor or police , the BEE wlli he ghd to point them out. ESCAPED CONVICTS. Night before hat. as the convicts were being looked in their cells for the night , Iho guards on the walls saw four convicts tunning from the wall to the west eiJn oj the enclosure. The giurds fired , but without effect. Parjult was made , and ono of iho men captured , bub the re maining throe succeeded in getting a way. The mon had been employed In the foundry , and got out by tearing away the wall nenr the nhop and crawling through the hole. The men who csjapcd 0:0 described as follows : John Strunol , 25 yeara old , light com plexion and hair , and weighs 1GO pounds. Ho was sent from Oago county April 21 , 1882 , for burglary , for six years. John Pjlo la 41 years old , and la five feet eight Inches tall , brown hair , blue eyee , and welgha about 155 pounda. Pylo waa sent front Furnoa county Juno 5,1885 , for an outrege. Frank Greek , the third man , is 2G years old , five feet ton Inches tall , _ has light complexion , black hair and iiqht blue eyes. Ho waa sent up from Oast county in May , 1881 , for two y ars and a half , for grand larceny. A reward of $50 for oioh convict has bean offered , and a number of men have boon 83ut out after them , Up to 8 o'clock last night nothing had bjou heard of the convicts. TROTIINd HOUSES AND THE ASYLUM The board of puhllo lands and build ings ara very Indignant over tha appoint ment of Mrs , Maihowson to the matron * chip of the Insane asylum. Gov. Dftwoi acted in a very arbitrary manner in mak ing this appointment without consulting the wishes of the balance of the board. The gentlemen think that the best inter ests of the Institution are notaubscrved , and that the state is not getting that which it should in the management of the asylum. Dr. Mattbowaon has many etrlatuioi passed upon his conduct by people who are interested in the good conduct of the asylum , and the bieath of ecandal has many times as- Balled him , wrongly , perhaps , in many Instances. It is aatd that ho at pres ent Is giving more attention to the train- log uf a trotting horsa which ho owns. It IB kept at the driving park and prom ises to become a very speedy animal in the cynrao of time , There la no objec tion to a man's keeping a fait hone so far aa la known , and nothing ia more pleasant than a drive behind ono , bat pleasure should not bo allowed to inter fere wiihbnslnosB. This , certain parties claim , IB the dootor'u cue. LOCAL POLITICS. Yesterday politics engrossed the atten tion of all clastoi to the exclusion of everything else , and candidates wore aa thick aa 11 ( as. The only contest which amounted to anything was in the Fourth ward , where the machine had a ticket and the outside or Independent citizens had a ticket , The wise mon siy that Griffith will gob enough delegates to flooura his nomination tor the treasurer' ' ehlp , and that office la really the only one worth fightlcg for. The present haa bo en the moat txcltlng local canvas for JOMS , and there in BO element of car talnty about the result. AIWKSTED FOH FBAUD.
