The "blow oft' valve was fully open by this tlino and the utoam soon filled the homo. In the excitement which prevailed when the steam was escaping from the boiler , ono of the workman , Paul Barn- stein by name , tried to break through ono of the basement windows , to the sidewalk. "Tho good citizens of Valentino , ' said a gentleman just returned fron the western country , to a reporter yesterday , ' 'aro just nt present bothered with a large number of conGdonco men. Thlannlsanca is of re cunt origin , Inasmuch as when Valentino was the headquarters of the cowboys , no "con" man dared to operate In the town , Now that Ohadron has do- volopad and haa boon mudo a sort of centra for all the cawboys of that section of the western country , the confi dence men are Hocking into Valentino. Last week 1 was tnore , and hoard of two very neat tricks being turned. In ono instance two of the confidence fraternity found a "sucker" the country and Induced him to enter a dive with them. There they told him that they wore traveling salesmen for a largo jewelry house , and wanted to sell out tholr samples. The greeny immedi ately offered to purchase , and produced a largo roll of money § 800 and laid It on tbo table. Ono of the men Immediately grabbed $100 of the money and ran ont of the house. The rustic WGS very much excited end wanted toglvo chr.ee at once. Ho wna prevented from doing so , however , by the other can mau who professed to leol very indignant over the action of his comrade and said that ho would got the sheriff to coma and In vestigate the matter. Ho returned soon after with a third "con" man who repre sented the sheriff. This man put a IOIIR- string of questions to the swindled man , and the consequence was that by the time a genuine alarm was given the "con" man and hid roll of stolen money were beyond rocovory. Another granger who was taken into ono of these dives by a party of crooks , had a large roll of money snatched from him. Ho showed fight , saying that no man should leave the room with hia money , and commenced to belabor the crooks ever tha head with anything ho cculd lay his hands on. Finally , ono man dropped down and feigned death. His comrades Immediately informed the sucker that ho had committed murder , and was liable to be arrested at once by the sheriff. They worked upon his feelings so that ho fin ally made up his mind to Qao. Ho left town at once , under the Impression that he was'a murderer , and before ho dis covered that ho had boon swindled , the crooks had made good tholr escape. " Convict JjaUor. At a mooting of the joint committees of the bricklayer. ) , stonoauttora and plasterers , hold on Friday evening , a special committee was appointed to draft resolutions on the matter of convict labor. The committee has completed its work , and the following resolution was adopted as defining the position of the various assemblies Interested on the point : Kesolved , That we , the bricklayers , stone cutters nnd plasterers , knowing the Injurious effects of convict labor when brought in com. petition with honest labor , do hereby declare that wo will not do any work on aoy bulldiusr , where convicts labor or material of any kind produced by conucU is being used.
