8 THE DAILY BEE-MONDAY , AUGUST 17 , 1885 , THE PAIL'S BEE. Monilav Morningi August 17 , LOOAL BREVITIES , A lot ot bedclothes nnd n act of hatnesi nwnit nn owner nt the city jail. Positive arrangements hava been m&do for n Bwiai of thtoa Rumes between Hie Union PMlfitt nnd the St. Joseph team for next Sitarday and Sunday the 22ad and 23d. Judge McOnltoch , of the county court , appointed Qeorcro II. Guy as member of the board to nwarddnmagoa to property owner ) MOOR the Omaha Belt line in place of Charlea Dewcy. Dewcy.Mri. Mri. Willis Johnson , of Franklin , Frank lin county , Neb , writes to Mrs. Pugsby , of the Woman's Christian Aid association doslr ing to adopt n homeless , friendless girl into her family , In a gama of base ball played on the B , & BI. grounds yesterday afternoon , the Monitors of West Omaha defeated the Park avenue nine by a BO ore of 21 to 13 , Green , of the Park A venues , made a fine left-handed catch , The Monitors play the Shamrocks of South Omaha next Sunday. No Pciinloi , If Von I'loaao , To the Editor of the BHK. In the Omaha Herald of a recent dale I find the following : "Tho banks are beginning to pay out pcnnlro , Marie , Falconer , Williams nnd other merchants are giving thorn in change , and the publishers of the World have sent cast for 25,000 pennies to tar nish nuwsbojB for change. The small coin will soon become qnito familiar In the city. " So wo ara to have n flood cf pennies. Jntt think of this , treat of the Missouri 1 I object to tbo whole bmlncca , and BO do a great majority of the dealers In Omaha , uulpsj I aui very much mlotaken. Wlien Smith canio to Omaha with his gambling echorno of oclllng dry goods below coat ho brought with htm a catch-ponny device which ho forced npon his competitors. Ho sold geode at odd figures 99 , 87 , 27 , 19 cents , nnd BO on so na to Introduce - duce the penny ayotoin of change , As a matter of fact the majority who bought at Smith's or anywhcro olao where pennies wcro being used did not wait to get their pennies. The penny system will prove a nuisance. It never can ba- rome popular In Omaha or any ether city west of the Missouri. This section of the country is not given to picayune methods. Some three or four years ego pennies wore introduced In St. Lnnls , bat it failed there , &ni tbo nickel la the ffnmllost coin that circulates In that city noiv. acd it ought to bo the smallcct In Omaha. It Is hardly worth while for o'orka to stand bohlnd the counter to sell a cent's worth of candy , ahcojtriogs , noddles , etc. The barkeepers do not core ta aell thrco cents worth of beer , or ssven cents worth of whlaky , D and four cents worth ot lemonade. tl When a customer buys a nlckle'n worth 0 of goodn ho gats value received. The k nlcklo as the lowest piece of change does ka not there ciuso any hardship upon the a poor. Very few business men , If any , 0tf cara to monkey with pennies , and tbo tfh. penny system ought to bo discounte h. nanced. 1 The proprietor ! ! of the World , who pro- faS peso to flood this market with pennies , fan have raised the prlco of their prospective n paper from two to three cents , This re siS minds mo of an attempt made In the S early daya to force thrco cent pieces upon the people of Omaha. At that time hi three-cent pieces pasied current for fr five cents In making change. Dr. Mo- tb neil , who was engaged In the banking InT business , sent east for five kegs of theao T [ coins , and tried to glut the market with aaw them at five cents oich. The retailers w got together ana agreed that they would Mni demand that two throe-cent pieces should ni pass for five cents. The enterprising el banker had no moro use for his three- th cent coins , and ho accordingly sent thorn re back east. If onr retail dealers will note faWl show as much spunk In regard to pen Wl nies , they will put an end to the nnlsanca thH at the very aiart. I hope Omaha has not H been reduced to the level of Chinatown. tri Yours truljr , NICHOLAS NICKLEIIY. a For Trade. Nance county lands for su stock of general merchandise or hard th ware. Sail career of a Pen- sylyania Girl , How Mrs , Hctlrlck Bus Fallen Ilelr- cso to Fortune Her Story , Some slight mention waa made In the BEE Saturday of tbo case of a woman name unknown , who came from the oaat many years ago , with a husband , tbo marriage- whom waa opposed by bor parents , and who afterward married a second husband from whom she has olnco boon divorced. The fnct was also mentioned that "this woman now In Indigent circumstances , baa just received notice from her friends in the east that her father bad died leaving her heiress tea a largo fortune. Believing that thta woman was still In Omaha , a reporter for BEE started out with n few scant point ers , determined to solve the mystery. Ho finally succeeded In finding tbo woman , and gained from bor and from her friends the story of a life which Is certainly replete witb everything of the strange and sorrowful. The womau la now In Omaha living In a small homo on the aontheaat corner of Seventeenth and Davenport atrdotr , and bor name Is Mrs. Matilda llcdrlok. Many years ago , when a young g'rl , she married a man named Jobn Briloy In Pennsylvania , Her parents wore troll- to-do and for oorno reason opposed tbo match , The young girl , however , came wcat witb her huabind , determined to help him make a homo. They nettled in tbo atato of lorca , and lived there for many years accumulating something of a fortune , having among other possceslona a good farm. Two children were born to thorn , Lydla and Loouaid. Istno or ton years ggo , Mr. Briloy dlod. A year or SD attorirarda she married a John Hodrlck , securing , as dovolopnunta afterward ahorrcd , a worthless adventurer for a hus band. Ho proved to bo a drunken sat , and cruel In the extreme. Mrs. Hodrlck and her husband , two years ago , moved to Nebraska. In Juno 1881 , Mrs Hodrlck made up her mind to I stand her husband'sabneo no longer and filled a petition for divorce In December ; of the enino year. Hedrick contested bit'orly tbo possession of a little nix yoir old child , which waa finally turned over by Judge AVakely into the care of the mother. About this time , Mrs. Hodrick woo In circumstances of the moot poverty stricken character. She happened to learn , however , that her boy , Laonard Briloy , was In the United States army , stationed at Fort Omaha , Kind friends secured bis honorable discharge from the army , in order that ho might go to work to belp bis mother who ho bad lost sight ! for nine years. When ho went out of the service , however , it is said , bo do- icrtcd ( his mother , and loft for parts un . known. In April , 1885 , Mrs. Brlley applied for ild ! to the ladles of tbo Woman's ' . Christian Aid Association. Sbo was .flken in and cared for by the klnd- icarted . matron , Mro. Pugsloy until May ) L885 ! , Tfhen she secured a position In the 'amlly of David Neale , of Fort Oalhoun. She worked there two months when she returned to Om it a. Since that time ibo has lived in tbla city , at the corner of Seventeenth and Davenport streets. Mr. Ncalo , who Is a warm friend of ' lers has been corresponding -with bor ' rlends In the east , and has jnat learned bat Mrs. Hcdrlck's father baa died , loav- ng bor a share of a bandaomo properly , 'ho , estate will bo turned over to bor so 161 eon as she can bo Identified as the girl pil rho ! left bor borne so many year * ago. lira. Hedrick was aeon by a reporter last light and did not appear to bo unduly ilatod over ber good fortune. She said bat she bad received a letter from her in qu olativea In tbo oaat , notifying ber of bor athor's death , she bad replied that ahe rould come on as soon as ho could get ho money. A sad paragraph in Mrs. [ r lodrlck's life story lafnrnlshodlntho semi raglo way In which she loat her daughter jydla. Some days ago , theto appeared r local print an account of the death by nlclde of a young , girl Star Fontaine , at [ ho Clotber house , Columbus. This onng woman afterwards turned out to Lydla Briley , the daughter by first 11 larrlago of Mrs. Hedrick. Tbo girl had " lany times bcfora tried to kill herself Stu r : nco whila at the Child's hospital , and StuV nco whllo at tbo bouse of Dr. Spragao.
