OMAHA WHOliBrjAhB MARKETS.
OFFIOE OF THE OMAHA Bci , I
Saturday Evening , August 15 , J
Trade Itoviow.
Business at the Union stock yards , South
Omaha , has been quiet the past week , List
ear grass cattle b pan coming In about the
rat of July and the receipts continued liberal
rom that time on through the season. This
eaaon the market is over thirty days behind ,
3 the receipts thus far have been very light.
'ho Indications ore that stock will begin
movintr the early part of the week , and will
move rapidly when once started.
Ranchman and farmers havocomo to realize
bo advantage ) in billing stock to the South
Omaha stock yards , as they can rob HI the
tock to Chicago without any increase in
rclght rotes , thereby having the advantage
f two markets. The stock yards company
make no charge for stock that is yarded , the
nly charges being for weighing and feeding.
Several stock trains billed to Chicago were
mlted at the yards , last week , nnd would
mvo f onnd a ready markotbad the owners been
> resent to authorize the sale. The owners of
ne train were compelled to sell in Chicago at
lie same rate they were offered here , with
relght added. Swift and Armour , of Chica-
o , will probably send buyers here ns aoon as
ho market opens fully.
Hammond & Co. , packers , are slaughtering
11 the dressed beef steers that come into mar
ket.
ket.There
There are rumors of now packing houses to
io started at the yards this fall , but nothing
efinlte as yet.
Produce has been alow the past week , The
market is clear , with a prospect of light ship
ments and fair prices. Jt may be said thus
ar that thoto dealers who have shipped in
heir produce to the commission men as font
a received have done the best , Those who
mvo been holding on for a raise have been
Isappolnted ,
Butter , when put up In neat packager , and
f good quality , has found ready sale , but
> oor grades have gone very alow ,
There has been a noticeable absence of fresh
ggs and a consequent loea to ahlppera nho
lave not candled carefully before thipplng.
'he market has remained very steady with
ew changes throughout the week.
The receipts aud sales of fruits have been
ory heavy. It is a noticeable fact that one
ar load of California fruit would go as far
ast year as five this year. The consumption
f fruit in this city is increasing at a marvel
ous rate and local producers ought to be
tlmulated to compete with California. One
ommission merchant alone disposed of a car
f fruit to local dealers in half a day last week ,
which ahowa the demand for fruit.
The grain market has been very quiet.
Jorn baa been scarce and has aold well ron-
idering tha decline in the Chicago market.
few oats have been plenty but have
gone at low prices , Large quantities of
new oats hare been damaged by the rains
during harvest and are almost unmarketable
at any price.
General merchandise has shown an increatcd
activity and the jobbers predict an unuiually
heavy fall trade , Trade in boots and shoes is
rradually Improving and there is some anima-
.ion In leather. Western manufacturers nre
ncroaiiog their facilities for makinr boots
and ihoea and propose to push the trade in
foreign foot wear ,
The trade la dry goods has shown con-
ilderable Improvement thla week , the increaie
l > eing largely in mail orders , although the
number of buyers that put In an appearance
las bseu larger of late. The eastern mills
are curtailing their production of cotton goods ,
and with reduced etncki , values are tending
upwards ,
The wholesale grocera are making ar
rangements to supply a large demand for all
klndi of goods , and indications are very en
couraging , Quotations remained steady lait
week with few changes.
