A Mjstory lievivert ,
It may ba remembered that on July

Good Sidewalks.
Adjutant General Dram no doubt
elated the naked truth when ho aajd that
Omaha was the "best paved city in the
union , " but if Gen. Drum had extended
his observations to the sidewalks along
our paved streets ho might have added
oinothlng not quito BO complimentary to
our city as his kind though truthful re
mark about the pavements. Thoio sidewalks -
walks , with few exceptions , nro simply
wretched when contrasted with adjoining
pavements. It la within the power of
the city council to change this state of
afliira and they should not hesitate to
perform tbolr whole duty in the promises.
They should Insist upon having the side
walks along p&vod streets constructed of
durable material such as ( .rlificial or nat
ural stouo and at a uniform grade. Some
of tbo most beautiful sidewalks In the
city are laid by John Grant with his pat
ent combination stone and slag pavement
ccmposed cf tha best Portland cement
combined with crushed atone , such as
granite , sand or llmo ttauo and crushed
metallic slag of groatdonelty. This forma
a sidewalk pavement of nnequalod beauty
nnd durability , and the price la within
rcaoh of every one. Consequently there
is no excuse left for property holder * who
have elegant buildings adjoining misera
ble sidewalks , and wo trust that our citi
zen a will move in this matter even with
out orders from iho city council , A
beautiful and durable sidewalk not only
enhances the value of adjacent property ,
but is a matter of piide to the whole
community and the admiration of stran-
RUM whoso good words are valuable to us.
