Yesterday ho made np his mind to carry out part of the programme Immediately. In the afternoon ho issued orders to Marshal Cummlngs to servo notlcoatonco upon the saloon men that they must cloao np promptly at 12 o'clock every night , and must keep their front doors closed on Sunday. Marshal Oammlngs and his men im mediately sot to work giving the rcqnlrec notlco. All saloonkeepers will bo ox pectcd to loader Immediate compllanci with the order , though no arrests of thosi disobeying will bo made until to night , In order that the now state o BfTalrs may bo fully comprehended by th saloon mon. Marshal Oammlngs In formed n reporter yootorday tha ho proposed to enforce the orde : fearlessly and without dlscrlmlna tlon , and all disobeying i after lastnlght will bo arrested and proio cuted , The marshal and Mayor Boyd hold a consultation at noon yesterday and the conclusion reached was thnt It would bo Impracticable to attempt to entirely close up the saloons on Sunday , as all o them would Cnd a way of evading th law. law."Yes. "Yes. " said Mayor Boyd In conversation tion with a reporter , "I have long con toraplatod taking this stop , and now I propose to see the moaanro carried fully into effect without rosono or partiality. I propose to hwo the saloons running juat as thuy wore when I was mayor before , with closed front doors on Sunday , and shut up entirely after midnight , Certainly there will bo no trouble In enforcing this order. The ordinance which provides for the licensing of the saloons , makes It an offense punishable with a $ lOOiao ( for a taloon man to kcop his place open after midnight or on Sunday. Why It baa not boon enforced durlug the prcced Ing administrations I can not occ. " 'Will the now order of the mayor ofFectJyonr business sorlously ? " was asked of the proprietor of ono of the all nliht ; places. "Yes , considerably. However , wo can't do anything but obey it , so far as I can sae. The only Item of economy which will balance the falling off in re ceipts which closing np at midnight will cause , is the fact that rro will have no oleotrio light to piy for after that hour. Closing np the frontdoors on Sunday will not hurt the business a particle. Men who want to "tvot up" will climb through the window , If necessary , to got it. " A petition had been circulated nmong the saloon mon requesting Mayor Boyd to take thla stop , and it had boon signed by ninety-four saloon keepers. Twenty- seven others were also in favor of the midnight closing , but did not sign the . petition. Twenty , however , were op ) posed to the movement , and expressed themselves as emphatically against the aow order. Bat they say they will take holr medicine with a pleasant faca and irate , In thehopo that the near future will leo the old order of things re-established.
