the remarkable strength developed this after
noon In the Gould stocks. The market tlii ,

pared with the closing prices of last evening

the dealings in Western Union. The strce
was liberally supplied with rumors , all tend
ing to show that an understanding had been
reached between tha Western Union am
Baltimore & Ohio telegraph companies by
which they wore to operate either in harmony

that the Westsrn Union had eocurcd control
of the Baltimore & Ohio. It 13 known thai
the Baltimore & Ohio lines were ottered to the
Western Union some sixty days ago , and that
the terms were not accepted. It is now sug
gested that negotiations have since led to
better results. The Western Union rose in
the afternoon from G9 | to 72J nnd closed J
lower , The strength m the afternoon WHS
accompanied by increased activity in the
active stocks , but the rest of the list was very
dull and practically featureless. As tomorrow
row will bo observed as a legal holiday , the
week on exchange closes this evening. Prices
no-v na compared with the closing quotations
last'Saturday are 4J per cent higher for Now
Jersey Central , SJ for Western Union , 2J for
Heading , nnd 2 for Louisville & Nashville nnd
Missouri Pacific each , while Lackawanna is
down 2i per cent.
