BELL & ? < 1cOAXDLisir , i 1011 Dodge St , j1 | THE GREAT WEST What Gen , Brisbiu Has toSafJMt Idalio , Idaho Gftttlo to Omaha Tdo Indians ot Northern Nebraska , Gen , James Brlsbln , in the city Mon- terday , on route to Fort Nlobrnra , where ho Is to assume command , was mot by a reporter for the BEE , who gleaned from his conversation eomo facts relative to Indian affairs and matters of general in the west. "No , " Bald the general in response tea a loading Inquiry , "I hare received no definite Information that ray post nt Fort Nlobrnra Is to bo increased from a five company post to ono of ten companies. It Is generally understood that such a move will bo made , however. Yes , I believe that necessity warrants the measure. Yon sco thcro are 12,000 Indians 'the Sioux , Ogallallns End Brules pressing close upon that quarter of Nebraska. The country is rapidly settling up at the rate of 200 a day , I believe and of conrno there is constant danger of attack from this largo nuas of Indians. No I do not tliink that there Is any danger of an im- modlato attack from the Indians. 1 be- llovo there oxlsts among them at present a perfectly friendly fooling toward the wnlto settlers of Northern Nebraska. Ib Is wonderful how that portion of the state is being settled up. The projection of the Northwestern from Missouri Vol ley Junction U already working wonders in the way of attracting emigrants to the regions through which It passes , " ' ' continued "Scarcely leas wonderful , Gen.Brisbln , ' 'Is the way in which the TEliniTORY OjflDAIIO Is bolntr developed. It la simply marvel- oua. The state is ono of many resources. It has good forming land will average thirty-live and forty bushels of wheat to the aero. Vegetables are raised In abundance there , nnd are very cheap cheaper than in Ne braska. The great difficulty which the people of Idaho have had to Oght has been the lack of rainfall. Irrigation has been resorted to , and this is ropldly supplying the necessary moisture. Nearly nil the good farming lands are irrigated : by ditches. Some of them very costly , too. Ono sixty miles long near Boise Olty will cost SI 500,000. Yes , there is no doubt but the average annual rainfall of Idaho Is being materially Increased by these measures of Irrigation. In fact It Is no ticed by people who have lived in Idaho for four or five yeara that the rainfall is much bettor and more evenly distributed than it was several years ago. The Irri gation ditches are rapidly spreading over the tillable portion of the state , and I have no aoubt but that it la only a ques tion of time before the rainfall will of It self bo largo enough for the purposes of BgTioultnro. "Then , In addition to the agricultural interests , Idaho has some very extensive gold and silver mines , which are being richly worked. Those mines are no con siderable element of the natural wealth of the territory , and will doubtless con tribute greatly to her development. This development , I have no doubt , is going to bo very rapid. The pushing of the Oregon short line through Idaho Is rapid ly opening the county nnd tUtrnoUni cot tiers. Praotlci'lly , you oes , the Oregon qhort line li the first tall road In the ter ritory , for the UUh & Northern parcel through but a small cornrr , and amounted to nothing as & factor in the rallrond problem. The Oregon short Una is doing a very largo Mid profitable business In Idiiho , I imderntand , carrying lr./go quan tities of height. " "llow about the stock Interests of Idaho ? " "They are very important aheady , anil increasing every year. OE coursa , thu cattle interests in Idaho ere not what they are in Montana or Wyoming. This year the territory will eend cast 30,000 cattle. " "Now there iano reason"continued tha general , "why yonr market hero should not roseivo a largo share of this amount. The market is much nearer than Chicago. I have no doubt but that Idaho BtocktnKi would much prefer to ship their cattle to Omaha than 500 mlloa farther east. 1 propoco to oeo your stockyards men hero and ascertain what can bo done to have the Idaho renchemon ship their stock to Omahn. There is no doubt but that yonr stockyards nra going- build up the city rapidly , proving a most Important factor In the growth and prosperity of Omaha. Indeed , I don't think it will bo many yeara before you filll have a town of 150,000 inhabitants. " HE HAD LEFT HER , The Slranco DIsapponrnnco of Youns Alan and Its Gruel ElTcct , Dr. Brown , the physician of Crclghton block , waa callea upon Monday evening to attend a e&d caio of attempted aulcldo. The victim of the attempt of tolf-doatruc- tlon waa a yoang lady , well known In thla city , and of respectable parent ? . For family reasons , her name la withheld. It appears that the young lady has been for a year or two on terms of friendly In timacy with n young man , who Is widely known in Omaha , and had , it U thought , engaged hcraolf to him , Their rolntlona hate been , apparently , of the moat friendly nataro. Lint week , however , ho young man left the city without siy- ug n word to lib frlenda or hla aflianced. A single letter written by a mutual friend of the two , broke the nowa of his de parture to the young lady. Immediately upon the receipt cf the letter oil Saturday , tbo girl foil Into a deep despondency whloh ho haa never shaken ftf , but whlsh ratlur has driven her further and further to do.'psratloii , Oa Monday af. tcrnoon cho rtitirod to her room , telling her ahter that oho would Ho down and try to deep. At cuppsr time aho failed to respond to n call , tuid her folke , to- coming alarmed after repeated attempts to arouiio her , hnret in the door. There thoj eaw a sad eight. The girl was otrotchtd out upon the bed poifcqlly iinomiclons , whlla on the chaii * bcaldo ! ier wni n half empty bottle of Jaudanum , which ehowod but too plainly the sad nuaiurca of cclf-deetrnotlon to which the despair of the dccsivtd girl had driven livr. Dr. Brown , who waa itumediitoly called , applied the proper reatcntlvea and caccceded in bringing her to con- Eclonsncue. A * a lata hour to-day tbo la repotted out of danger. : Tha letter received by the young lady , with names omitted , tuna as below. It is written In a half jocular atraln , which li strangely unbecoming , and which must only have served to heighten the crnol effect of the missive : "DEAU Miss , " "It is In ao- cordanco with the dying request , as It were , of a dear friend that I now address rou. That friend I have reason to bo- llovo Is not altogether unknown to you. His name la late of this city , but now unppoiod to bo a wanderer upon the face of the oarth. * * * * As ho grasped my hand In a last farewell , with tears In his eyes , ho implored mo , as n friend and fellow laborer , to grant his last request , which was that 1 bid you , for him , a tender farewell , and In form yon that ho was a stranger hence forth to Omaha. Just at that time Officer Tnrnbnll hap- paned to pass and saw tha fracas , Ho irrostod Chuck and with the help cf a special policeman commenced to take him to jail. On the way up they were stopped by a man who demanded Chuck's release. Ho was beaten off , and again the officers resumed their journey jail- wards. They had nearly arrived at their destination when Chuck made a desperate attempt to free himself , but was unsuc cessful , Officer Tnrnbnll dealing him two or throe Instructive blows on the head. The two officers managed finally to get the prisoner up to jail. This morning ho was fined $10 and costs. A.
