HE DAILY BEE Tuesday Morning , .June 30 , LOOM. BBEVITJEB , TLo clearings ot Saturday were § 423- 817.03 , of the past week , $2,198,303.50 , The city treasurer and his assistants ate busily engaged in pushing personal co'lcc- lions. Two steamboats , s id to be of the Sioux Oily packotpMsed down river yenterdaymorn log , stopping for a short time at the foot of Fntnam street. A game of hall was played Sunday be * twoon the Celling , Gordon k Kay and the Faxton & Gallagher nines , resulting in favor of the former by a icoro of 22 to 8. A new beer garden was opened by a man by the name of Smith , near llnscall'a park , day. The proprietor of the place left a coat , eald to contain about 8200 , hanging up on'ono of the trees , and some thief made off t no cluo. In Judge Anderson's court yesterday the C&BO of MM , Klnsly vs. Mrs. Carmichael ter minated In a judgment of ? 5 for plaintiff. The dafcui'nnt was sued because her cow broke into the Kinily garden and ate up gomo of the vegetables , An engine which was being painted in the Union Pacific shops Saturday , taking ad vantage of an open throttla and sufficient steam , started off at a rattling pace and be- fora it could bo stopped , ran Into a turn table pit. No ono was sovorly injured , Complaints were istuod in the police court yesterday against Mammo Stilts for ualng obicene language ; against 1 ? . M. Notz- nor and Sire. Netznor * for raising a disturb- unco ; and against Mrs , O'Brien for hitting ' Mrs. John Haley on the head with n ham mer. The latter defendant has given bonds to appear on June 30 for trial , Sanday'd game at the Athletic park , was a very tame ono. The Athletics could not manage to bat Kockwoll's curves , and the result was that the Union Pacifies had an easy walkaway. The game resulted In a score of IB to 2 in favor of the old-standbys. Be tween 20o and 300 people witnessed the game , Mrs. Goo. A. noaglnud very narrowly es caped , Sunday , what might have been a most serious ncddont. While driving up Sixteenth street post the city jail her horec switched the lines out of her hands onto the ground. Luckily , Col. Smythe happened to bo close at hand and quickly caught the ani mal before he could start to run , A Bohemian loan and building associa tion has lately been Incorporated. The officers of the aamo are John Kosicky , president ; 1C , W. Bartos , secretary , and F. J. ICaspar , treasurer. Monthly payments Into the same ulllbwincn the second Monday in July. It is incorporated on about the same princi ples as the Omaha and Mutual Los a and Building association , Mr. J. J. Kallna , from Colllnsvllle , 111. , . Is In the city , visiting his brother-in-law , Mr. Prank Bandhauer , and looking up his chances to locate hero , Mr. Kalina haa invented and patented an ingenious device in vehicle springs , which enables the body or bed to ad just or level itself on any kind of roadbed , wd lessons , if not entirely does away with ug. The lower section of the spring is , than the upper , bent on ends , which are supplied with elastic buffers or cushions. The upper section .has on each end n couple of anti-friction rollers , between which are inserted the ends of the lower sec tion of spring. If the road bed is uneven , lower on one side , the bed of the vehicle will slide to that side , seeking a level. If the road is rough there Is no jolting , bnt only a slight sliding or rocking movement of the vehicle. _ In referring to , the business sensation of yesterday , the failure and absconding of L. "L. Smith , the dry goods merchant , there is ono wan ( Wm. 0. Taylor , agent at Omaha for Bradstreet ) , to whom the wholesale mer chants owe n debt which should not be for gotten. From the day that Mr. Smith landed in Omaha Mr. Taylor insisted to his corres pondents that Mr. Smith's business methods would break him , and no representations could ewervo Mr. Taylor from his opinion in the matter. Salesmen , as is often the case , would try to almost force favorable state ments from Mr. Taylor , In order to indueo their houses to fill Smith's orders , but In no case has Mr. Taylor failed to warn dealers that they were pUyins ? with "edged tools. " It came to Taylor's knowledge that Smith was endeavoring to get copies of the a gency reports , and ho therefore issued an order to sill of Bradstreot's offices warning them of Smith's desire , and forbidding compliance with his wishes. The mourners at Smith's funeral would not bo there today if they had followed Braastroot'd reports , and they may get a peculiar csmfort in calling : for and reading - ing Bradatroet on Smith , which report will probably open freely to the public to-day. Swcdo Hold up , Saturday night , or rather early Sunday morning , the people in the vicinity of Twelfth and Capitol nvonuo were treated to an eacapado In which a wicked burst- lar was the prominent figure. It appears that the thief had taken an axe and walked boldly Into the homo of Sqalro Gentry , on Capitol avenue near Twelfth , and proceeded to go through the mansion In the approved style. Ho gathered up a lot of clothes belonging to a lady and a coat belonging to Mr. Gentry , but did not take them , as there was bnt very llttlo money in them. Ho invaded the bedroom of Mra. Mitchell , a lady ( top ping In the house , and tried to find same money which WAS nnder ono of the pil lows , A feminine scream or two drove him ont , when ho realized that the good paoplo of the houio had become aware of bis presence. Ho ran ont Into the alloy and in trying to make his osoapo , clam bered over a length of the rotten fence which gave way with a crash. The whole neighborhood was pretty well aroused by this time , bnt Mr. Thief man aged to occapo. Ho lott his axe behind him. IIEID UP A SWEDE. About three o'clock yesterday morning the residents near the corner Ninth street and Capitol avenue wcro startled by n succession of loud and piercing cries. Some of the people living in the neigh borhood jumped ont of bed to investigate the matter , and fonnd that a Swede had boon hold up by three footpads and re lieved of about $85 In money. The slug gers made good their escape before the Strode knew exactly what had trans pired. Ho pursued them in the direc tion of the river , but they disappeared in the darkness.
