There are many different guesses aa to
who wrote the speech delivered by Presi

A young man from ono of the towns
near Conncll Bluffs , who had been seeing
the sights In Omaha , and whoso oyocame
In contact with a drunken man's fist
whllo there , stopped at a drug store In
this city yesterday , and had his black eye
painted "flesh color , " or as near It as
possible , and returned to his homo.
Loulo Ludwig was arrested yesterday
on the charge of assaulting 0. R. Scott ,
the assault consisting In squirting water
with a hose on Scott as the latter was
driving along the street whore Ludwig
was sprinkling. The defendant claimed
that It was an accident , bat Scott In
sisted that It was done with malice afore
thought , and the case was continued for
a woek.
About 1 o'clock yesterday morning the
police found a man struggling in the
creek , he having fallen off Matn street
bridge , a distance of twenty feet. The
man was thought to bo seriously hart ,
but later investigation showed that he
was too drank to be badly injured. He
was in a horrible condition , his clothes
being all mod and his body somewhat
bruised and scratched. The fellow gave
his name as Mike Hlcky.
J. Modonol was before the court yester
day morning for being drunk , and plead
ed guilty. Having no money to pay the
fine the judge ordered that ho go to work
| t on the streets , whereupon the follow
wanted to know how long ho would have
* to work. "Wo will glvo you § 1.50 a
day , " replied the judge. "Who will I
not my pay from when I get through
work ? " The poor Innocent was led out
to bo initiated.

confidence of the boy that ho had none

Teachers' Institute ,
Superintendent J , M. Matthews is ar
ranging for a normal Institute to be held
n this city , Monday , July G , to continue
n session three wooka , and another ses-
ioii to open In Oakland , August 3 , to
continue for a like term. In making the
announcement he says :
Inexperienced teachers and those deslrin
higher grades of certificates will receive
no recognition of their claims without
attending ono of the n'ormal institutes
announced herein , or furnishing satUfac-
ory excuses. One registration will en
title the teacher to a place in both In
stitutes , and it is hoped all who can will
attend at both places. The Intention
n dividing Is , however , to accom
modate each extreme of the county with
a separate session. A good corps of In
structors will be provided for each ses
sion , the programme for the first or

similar to that of last year , but greatly

dumb took place in the presence of quito
a goodly number of visitors ,

McDermott has charge , and In which
such wonderful results have been accom-
