Stocks Dull nil day. Trices wore barely
steady at the opening this morning nnd imme
diately the market sold oil n fraction , but the
decline was checked and the highest prices
of the day were generally reached before 1
o'clock. After the announcement had bean
made that the Northwestern directors had de
clared the usual 3J per cent dividends on
common Block and'that the surplus , after the
paying of the dividend , would amount to
$50),000 , a determined ratd was made upon
hat and several other Blocks , notably Union
Pacific , Pacific Mail , nnd Lackawanna , re
sulting In a decline In the last hour of J to Jo.
There was a slight rally just before the close
of the board which caused the market to close
a shade absve the lowest figures of the day.
The Chicago & Alton gross earnings for the
month of May were reported at $585,652 , o
decrease from the same month of Jast year of
561,103.

Butter The market is in the worst state of
demoralization and the glut continues. A
comparatively small portion of the receipts-
composed of the best quality of fresh grass
butter only Is picked out by the trade , lOo
being tha best price obtainable and almost an
exception , while all off grades , such as lack
uniformity In color or have not boon worked
properly , are taken by packers only at ex
tremely low prices , ranging from 3@7c. The
total Is surely very discouraging to shippers ,
and prospects are anything but bright. Bales
are made very slow now.
Eggs At the beginning of the week it
seemed as if the market was going to strength
en up some , but receipts increased and they
would not move above lOc , Rotten eggs are
now putting in an appearance and candling Is
neceesaiy.
Poultry Receipts of old chickens are very
heavy and demand Is only limited , not over
$3,00 ebtalnablo. Spring chickens are also
plentiful and slow sale at $3.00 ; larger sizes
are wanted and will brine ; better prices.
Potatoes In more liberal supply , and de
mand only fair at GOc for best stock ; Callfor
