Oarbonvlllo lies just oyor the contlnon
tal divide on the Pacific side. In Lak
county , about twelve miles from Load
villo as the crow flies. It was n mush
room city , nnd at that time , 1882 , was in
the hootlo heyday of Its prosperity. Ite
business portion was made up largely o
saloons and faro banks , and the fact tha
its population was mainly gentlemen
exiled tor various oll'dnsos from Load
villa trill glvo an Idea of its moral status
One of the very few "respectable1
women iu the camp was a Mrs. Jake
Cory , who ran a little lunch-room and
restaurant. She was sweet-faced and
sweet-tempered , and had an abiding fund
of patience , that enabled her to put up
with the vagaries of one of the worst
husbands in the world. Wo in the
camp thought that Jack Cory was ab
solutely the worst on tbo face of the
earth. Ho was a drunken , foul-mouthed ,
brutal Scandinavian , who dlyidod his
time between the gambling houses nnd
worst ronorts. At these places ho spent
every dollar his wlfo earned and all ho
could barrow on her good name. Ho
once went so far as to pawn her furniture
down to the cooking stove over which
she supported him. I mention these
things to show that the sequel was not
altogether nnprovoked.
FOR STIUKINQ A WOJIAM ,
Ono evening Cory came Into the res
taurant drunk and struck his wlfo savage
ly in the faoa. Ho .escaped through the
buck door of the kitchen , and she came
In , scared and blooding , and told the
itory.to some of the boarders. An Im
promptu indignation mooting waa held
miong the "boys , " and It was decided tear
: ar and feather the fellow and run him
jut of town. The phrasa sounded well
n the month of the man who suggested
t , and everybody agreed that It waa the
iorrect thing to do.
No tlmo waa lost , A couple of men
an over to the roQnlng work ) and got a
) lg Iron bucket of pitch , and others pro-
iurod an old feather tick from a lodging
louse. Then a committee started out to
; et Cory.
They fouud him asleep in a saloon ,
tnd hustled him out to a vacant lot in
ho rear of some buildings. He was
mlf-dazed and oDnfusod with drink , and
hought the affair a joke , until the men
> egan to strip oil his clothes. Then ho
ought like n madman In truth , I be-
love ho was mad with terror. His shirt
ind underclothes had boon literally torn
iff of him , and it was a good fifteen
nlnntes' work before ho stood , shivering
ind stark naked , in the monlight.
APPLYINO THE TAH.
I can see him now his bleared eyes
Illated and his shock of yellow hair
> ristling on his head. His nude body
iood out in bold relief against the
; roup that surrounded him , and the chill ,
icnetrating a r mint have struck the
rrotch to the bone. At any rate , ho
irouchod down and somebody called out :
'Glvo it to him nowl" At the aamo In-
itant the bucket of tar was lifted , and
ibout a gallon thrown with a swash over
its bare shoulder ! . Ho sprang erect at
he cold touch of the pitch , and whirled
iround just in time to receive the rest
if it on his head , face and chest.
For a moment ho stood petrified , the
jlack stuff trickling down bis body and
ogs , aud uniting with a treat ? puddle of
I on the ground. Then ho slowly raised
bis hands to his eyes and tried to brash
them clear , but as his fingers and 10-
solved a good share of the pitch , ho only
made matters worse , and dropped his
arms again. Ho did not seem to bo able
to realize what had happened , nnd wagged -
god his head blindly from side to sldo.
As ho stood thus , one of the men took
the upper edge of the tick and Inverted
It over him. I suppose it was as com
plete a job of the sort as was ever under
taken ; at least , nothing was overlooked
to make It a success. Uory looked like
nothing human , but some strange species
of monitor blotched all over with ilaffy
white. His head seemed about the size
and shape of n bushel basket , and his
features were obliterated in the general
blackness.
IT WAS A COLD NIGHT.
When the work was done ho was given
Qftccn minutes to get out of camp. Ho
was made to understand with difficulty ,
but waa finally started on the trail and
tbo crowd disappeared.
Etrly next mornolng some mlncra , goIng -
Ing to work , found Cory back of a build
ing lying on the ground and moaning.
Tbo tar had by this time [ rubbed all over
him and partly solidified. As It grow
hard It contracted and every contraction
had dragged with it the thousands of mi
cro * conic hairs irith which the body Is
covered. In places it had broken the
skin , and the mon who carried him Into
a shod found blood on tholr hands , A
physician , then locited there , and now
Hying at Greely , Col , , was called In and
attempted to remove the stuff with ben
zino. It was an utter failure , at was
everything else tried , from grease to am <
monia.
1 saw him in the course of the morn
ing. The lower portion of his body was
covered with a blanket , but his face was
a spectacle not easily forgotten. The
hard pitch was cracked all over it , like
alligator skin , and had cracked so solidly
around one eye It was Impossible to re
move It. The other eye was opened , but
dreadfully inflamed aud suppurating. At
places over the surface were sodden
splotches of feathers.
Business called mo away from Carbon
villo for about two weeks , and a few days
after 1 returned Cory died. Meantime
most of the tar had been removed by
successive washes , but his skin was oov
erod with minute black specks like tbo
shaven chin of a man who has a heavy
beard. They were the choked np peers
of the skin , and this was probably the
real cause of tha death , A short Urn
after the punishment he had been taken
with raging fever , and then symptosi
of a singular blooa disorder sit in. The
skin over tbo chest , nock , cheeks and
outside of the arms rcso in hird ridges ,
totally devoid of feeling. These rapidly
sloughed off , leaving open ulcerj. I
shall not enlarge upon these details ,
which would only perhaps interest a
medical man , further than to say that
the symptoms were In all save one re
spect identical with leprosy. This sole
difference was the frightful rapidity of
their dovolopoment. The distorted re
mains were hurried Into the ground.

Public sympathy Is warmly enlistjd on
th3 side of that adrnln.H oatonlan , Mr.
John L. Snlllvnn. Ho la now dofondanl
In a divorce unit brought by Mrs. Sulll *
van , and it IB clear that ho i a greatlj
abnsod man. It appears from his tosti'
mony that Mrs. Sullivan la addicted to
Intoxication and that aho Is gnilty ol
treating her husband oruolly and Inhu
manly , although ho is ono ot the kindest
and most temperate of mon ,
It has hitherto been supposed that Mr.
Sullivan himself was In the habit of got-
tint ? very drunk. It is pleasant to know
' that this la
on Mr. Sdllivan'fl authority
nntnio. Ho was never drunk in his life
and never drinks to excess. Occasionally
ho falls sink , owing doubtless to excessive
Intellectual labor , and his enemies will
fully confound his sickness with drunk
enness. On the well known occasloii
when ho appeared at Madison-Square
Qatdon and Informed the asasrablod pub
lic that ho was too sick to fight ho told
the truth , for ho had drunk nothing
itrongor than brandy , and would have
been able to walk with ease had not his
utack of lllncsj loosened the joints of
its legs. In spite of Mrs. Sullivan's pro-
onio that her husband had boon accna-
-otncd to knock her down and kick her ,
10 has always treated her with the ut-
nest tenderness. In fast ho hardly
loaded to deny his wife's absurd charge ,
or It Is well knosvn that pugilism is a
uanly art , aud consequently no pugilist
lonld possibly bo guilty of the unmanly
ifienso of wlfo boating.
The picture which Mr. Sullivan draws
if the auflbimga which ho has undergone
t the hands of his wlfo Is enough to eot
ho blood of a brass monkey boiling.
Mi t ferocious woman has been In the
tabit of hitting poor Mr. Snllivnn over
ho head with bottles and heavy pieces o !
rockorywaro. Ho has evidently lived
n terror of his life. Ho never know at
rhat moment his athletic wife would In
llct physical punishment upon the poor
Ick husband. When ho wont homo late
t night from the mooting of the Boston
Ilsatonary Society or the Ooncord school
f Philosophy ho was always liable tend
nd Mrs. LSulllvan grimly waiting for
Im with a convenient missile within
jacb. It being contrary to the Qs kor
rinciplcs which were Instilled into
Ir. Sullivan In his early youth to rc-
snt aggression , ho never resented Mrs.
ulllvan'a assaults , but entertained
er with endearing epithets to consider
ts weakness and to spare him
ir the sake of Ills aged mother ,
omotlmea , in the hopa of allaying Mrs.
ullivan'a rage , ho would sing hymns ,
hilo kneeling at her foot ; but his
athetio appeals were nsolcss , and his
ifo would continue to beat the defense-
SB man nntll a good old lady residing
ext door would rash in , snatch poor Mr.
ulllvan from his tormentor , and drying
Is tears with her apron would take him
i her own house and console him with
ngorbroad and candy. It ia true that
[ r. Sullivan did not mention all those
stalls in his testimony , but from what
3 did say wo can imagine the terrible
[ o ho must have led while in the patror
: Mrs. Sullivan.
The court will , of course , take meas-
roa to protect Mr. Sullivan. Ho should
3 placed in charge of a guardian , cay
imo benevolent elderly lady , who will
, ko care of him and keep him out of
irs. Sullivan's roach. Ho is an alTec-
onato and fragile ilower , and ho needs
1 tha tenderness thot hla weak and do-
useless condition necessarily inspires in
rery charitable heart.

Paul Boyton's recent prank in placing a
utnmy torpedo against the British war-
blp Garnet In New York harbor brings
3 mind Sergt. Loo's attempt to blow up
iord Howe's flagship , the Eagle , in the
ame waters In 1770. He used a torpedo-
oat Invented by David Bnshnell , aftcr-
rord a cap'aln ' in the patriot army. It
.ad boon tried with success experiment-
lly , aud gave promise of being useful In
etious warfare. The first opportunity
or such ujo occurred when the British
lost took possession of New York har-
ior. The Bashncll beat was moro like a
larrol than a boat. It was of oak , Iron
landed , and only largo enough for one
lorson. 'When floating upright , the
lavigator's head was a little above the
nrfaca of the water. By moans of two
orco pumps , worked by the occupant's
eet , the vessel could bo made to elnk or
lie In the water by forcing water out or
n , and so changing its specific gravity ,
is progress horizontally was governed by
wo revolving paddles in front , turned by
, crank inside. The torpedo was f tined -
ined to the bick of the boat by a ecraw ,
ho releaio of which set In motion a clock
onnocted with a gunlock and Hint. Af-
er the predetermined Interval of time
tad elapied , the clock would strike and
gnite the powder.
The torpedo carried by Leo against the
liable was charged with 150 pounds of
nwdor ( some say 130 pounds ) , and the

hlrty minutes after the torpedo was
