A- .On THE DAILY BEE---MONDAY , MAY 25. 1885. 5 MONSIGNOR CAPEL. The Great English Divine ana Orator in Omaha. His liccluro nt Hoyd > Opera House Imflt Nl lit on "Infnlllbillly of tlio Popo'1 DIXJB lor Ilrjolc * Inc An Intcrcatlnr ; Dig- conrso , Klc , Monslpnor Cnpel , the colobrntcj Kngllih (11 vine nnd nrntor , lectured at BoyeVa opera houio Intt ni ht to n Inrge nnd appreciative nndienco. Shortly nftcr 8 o'clock , Mr. W , A , 1 > , Gibbon Introduced the distinguished prolalovho Vegan his dlsciuroo ID clear nnd measured tones with a thoroughly Knglleh n/Jt. _ It Is ImpOsslhlo t glvo anything llko n full report , but some of his mott im portaut utterances are hero reproduced , Tha lecturer aald ho experienced considerable diffi culty In selecting a utiojcct on which to Icc- tuto , owtnp ; to his not having the honor of a personal acquaintance with the pcoplo of our city , but ho had left the B'lection to eomo of our most prominent cithollc > , and they had chosen that of "Tho Infalihlllty of the rope. Homo might o k why , in any sonan of the woid , the ittbject Intorcsted them. T , ) thes ho would reply that they could not bo Igno rant of the lnct that even in their own house hold there nro these who ate followers of tha catholic re'lgion , and that amotrf those they had ti ) doil with iu ovnry day lilu thpy comu ncrona many vv ho held the catholic creed n I ono of their dearest and most eacred truths. Ho projuinod that It w.u not by sot purpose but liy accident that the subject chosen lilted ina very remarkable way with the day. They were nil familiar with our national festivals , They had certain dayo which they held as sacred ai recalliug the birth of the imtioti or , of curtain great men nnd it was the same with the Individuals ; They too all have a certain number of days In the year that ara filled with associations which thfly look npon _ ns sacred and on which they glvo expncaiion to joy and gralitudn for the gifts that they have received. In llko manner the Chrintion church has tco licr days of grace. Christians have their dayt > , when not aa men but as Christian * and ai members of the church , not of the earth but of the Kingdom of Christ , they rpjolcaand this In the I'peclnl anniversary of her birth just ai the , United StatcH on a certain day constituted itself an independent power and asserted its tight to call Into existence a separata nation , BO the church of God put her linger upon a certain day and declared it to bo her birth and regarded It , consequently , aj a day of great rejoicing , and this VVMS the tnnivor Bary of the day they were keeping to-day , namely , the Pentecost. They were all familiar with the fact that from the beginning of the world the spirit of God has suggested to every Individual the good that waa to bo done and the evil to bo avoided and the cumo spirit of God hag aided each separate individual in the performance of such good acts and the avoidance of such ovll ones , It began with our llrst parents and continued through all generations. But what the lecturer wished to moro particu larly impress upon his hoarera was that promisfH made by Christ that the spirit of God was to abide with them for always , even to the very end of time , Every passage of ecriptura boars evidence that our iUdeomor declared tbut bo was to found on earth a kingdom of his own ; a kingdom that was not to bo limited by mountains or rivers , tier by the difference of language or peoples ; but ic would comprise all nations and would cnduro to the very end of time. This waa the promise foretold by the prophets. As in the ciso of the United States , a constitu tion was made and aloptcd , BO our Lord selected from these who taught hu doctrines twelve men who were empowered with a commission to proah the gospel , heal the sick and perform other du tioa , Out of the twelve Ho selected ono man whom Ho gave cowers thntHn gave not to the others. Our Lord selected 1'dtor to whom Ho said tliou shall bo called Peter ( and that in rock ) and upon this rock shall bo built my church. This promi90 which our Lord made lias since been confirmed. Tha promise that tha spirit of God dull abide with m Is one that oiiduros not only for this century , but for all the centuries to coma to the end of time. i The reverend lecturer explained at consid erable length the real meaning of popal infali- bllity. Ho held that the pope wai Infaliblo when ho acted ex-oQicio , else it would bo use less to place any confidence m his decisons whatever. Ho might bo very poor , ignorant , and oven criminal m his privnto life , bub when horpokoin the sanctuary , he waa under the inspiration of God. Wo might as well object to the decisions rendered by the judges on the supreme bench Lcciuso sumo of thorn were Immoral and intcmperata in their private lives , but all wo aekccl or expected of them was that thpy would .adminstor the law ? . Bo it was with tha church , all tha church attempted to do through ita minlatcrd was the carrying out of tha ecclesiastical law , Tncn again somu people made a grcnt tilk about the ne- caaelty of tha bible , and chitxcd the catholic clergy with having withheld it from the poo- pie. Thin , tha lectmrr maintained , was entirely erroneous , and ho cited numerous in stance to prove that in o.rl.v days the catho- lies were indeed the only translate of the holy scripluioa. ] Jut he chimed that it was < iuita possible for n person to bo a good Christian vuthcut neoiug the bible , and gave pome very apt ministrations toprovo the truth of hid .isior tloiu , If all the bibles on the face of God' earth were burnuit tu-mt/rrow it would still bo possible for a man to bo a good Christian , Wo are many of us now upon the edge of a prccl- nicoaud wo have cither to laka a jump into ioliJulity or to Bt.ind time to revolution. The lecture was listened to throughout witli marked attention and at times when the loc- turar gave expression to eomo almojt humor ous remark it was evident tliat many had cou- sidor&ble dilliculty in preserving that gravity of ddmeauor befitting such an occasion , i V THE FIEE FIEND , Mr , IVIoycr's IMalnliifr Milt Kntlioly Destroycil No Insurance , At half past 4 o'clock yesterday morning , Andrew Meyer's , Gate City , plaining mill at 110 North Ninth street was discovered to bo on tire , An alarm was turned in to headquarters - quarters Immediately , and the departments nil responded promptly , but by that time the flames had gained inch headway that it was impossible ( or thorn to save anything and the building with Its contents was almost en tirely iliitniyed. It is nupposed that tha fire originated from tin boiler room. The Oumbft-l'ortland oxcunlonista , tired but happy In the pleaiant recollections of a memorable trip , arrived In the city Saturday morning , in the two special cars attached to the regulai overland train. From a gentleman who has just roturue : fromllurt county , it In learned that the heavj etorms of last week did considerable damngi in the vicinity of Decatur. Such heavy rain were rarely or never experienced before ii tnat locality , The lowlands were coverci with the ruihing torrents ot water , while th farma luppssed to be 10 high as to enjoy ptr patnal Immunity from the disastrous cffecla ot henry rains , were likewioo inundated. A plow which wa lying in a field was picked up by the flood and washed away to the dis tance of three quarters of a mile. Inform tIon AVfintcd. Armed AVith Kcvolvcrs nml Riixors , Go Out to Break Up n Dnnco , A pistol ahot , rattling ot broken glass nnd agonizing groans from nn unsuspecting and Innocent victim were the moans of suddenly brenklni ; up the enjoyment of o Germon dnncothat WM in progress In tha Ainscow building on Lcavenworth , between Tvvolflh nndThirtsenth streets , last night , and throw , ing these who wore there , together with people ple living In that neighborhood , Into a stuto of terror nnd oxcltotnont that for n time wai certainly wild and tumultuous enough to gratify any fancy. The circumitancei m'vy bo related ca follows : About 11 o'clock last niuht Louo nnd Walter 1'arro , two Itallsu brother ) , went to the Ainscow building , where several Gorman cltlzauu were enjoying themselves dancing. These boyn were dmnk and nuarreleomo. It teems that they wanted ha-Jly to raise ft row there , and were put out of the house. Walter walked around to the side of the building , and seeing Frank Martin on the inside , druw his rovolvur and aiming through the window , fired nt him The ball entered Marlin'slolt side , just below the waist-band of his trousers , passed entirely through hla abdomen nnd lodged somewhere near the skin on hla right tide. Ho was carrird to his homo on Mason , between Fourteenth and Fifteenth streets , nnd n messenger summoned Dr. Ralph who arrived promptly and probed for the bullet but could not find It. 11 o snya that the wound is n very dangerous one and more than likely apt to prove fatal. At n Into hour the nnfotuuate man was ttil' ' liviiif , but suffering Intense ngony. The affair created wild excitement for sev eral minute ! . Women screamed nnd ran in all directions , Nn less than half-a-dozen of them telephoned Tom Pieronet at the jail to send them a force of police , that everybody waa being killed. A3 Capt. Sullivan , accompanied by two or three officers , was going down Fourteenth street to the ecene of confusion , ho saw two individuals trying to hi do In an alley , and had them arrested on suspicion. They were taken to the wounded man's house , and by him identified as the poisons who wore guilty of the crime. Threa or four oilier men nlio Identified them , nnd one man who stood within ten feet of Walter Parro when ho allot saya that the right chap has been arrested. Both word taken to the city jail and locked in separate cells. They nro young men , 1m o been working on the street sweep- inn gang , and were always considered quiet , peaceable fellows. But they vvtnt on a sprea last night , and when under the influence of too much fire water became desperate enough to commit any kind of crimes. Walter wai armed with n revolver and when Jailor 1'eironet searched him he found seven bullets in his pockets. Afcer doing the sl-ooting , it appears that he tlirow the gun away , 'fho other ono carried a rarqr , nnd when at the dance had it out , open , in his hand. Mr. Marian , tha victim , is an industrious and inoffensive German citizen , a man about lid years of r.go and married. The outrage is keenly felt by hU frlenda and after the first excitement had died down mutterings were heard among them that sounded vary much as though they would not wait for the law to avenge the wrong. In fact , talk of lynching was no secret , nnd tbo officers said tint they loured therfl would bo trouble before morning ff Marlin died , About 3 o'clock this morning Tone Fran- goly waa arrested and held as n witness ngainst the murderers. Tie saw the shooting nnd says that both the boys had revolvers and both shot. Among the penitentiary Inmates at Stoney Mountain ia an Indian , who the other day was enjoying a quiet walk , and donbtlets contemplating the days when ha waa free to wander untrammeled through the wild woods. In pasting a certain pot near which some of the con victs wore splitting wood , ho WAS struck on the head by a big stick , thrown with considerable force. Instantly the demeanor meaner of the Indian WAS changed , nnd ilia worst elements of his nature arontad , Ho was uo longer the quiet thinker , the subdued and peaceful inmate of Warden Dedsou's Institution. In a few momenta the whole man WAS changed , and , with a bound toward the convict who had so carelessly struck him , ho gave voice to a war whoop which sent a thrill of terror through the hearts of the bravest. In a moment the Indian had hla victim In a deadly embrace , and was getting satis faction when the interference of the guards effectually prevented him from proceeding further in bis designs.
