F. Carson , traveling agent of the Northern Pacific , rendered polite and valuable attentions , and to him Is the party Indebted for n xido about the town and along the splendid roadways loading to various points of Interest , particularly to the ship-building harbor at Etqulmalt , where ono beholds ono of the naval posts which sol voa RS a link to England's chain of stations belting the earth and where drum-boat , Webster declared , "followed the course of the sun. " Upon the war ship "Satellite" were scon in perfection the armament for naval operations , and the utmost order prevailed. Tlio civil and military people in Victoria and this country generally have worked themselves - selves Into a forer of fear lest THE KUSSIAN FLEET , but a short journey away , should troop down and gobble Vancouver's Island. Vfclotia is a typical Engllgh town of beautiful homos and superb evergreens , summer flowois , and scenery. Its people plo close up their houses of business at 4 p. in./and take life easy. Indians abound 1 , and the half-breed race , If race ib may bo called , furnishes sons and daughters among the "beat people. " Johnny Bull's ways are noticeable all around , and des pite the many advantages nature has be stowed upon the place and people , it Im presses the rcstlecs SONS OF UNCLE BAM as slow-going , Inactive , and asleep. After a fine dinner at the French hotel , Driard , the finest hostelrle in Victoria , the Omahaltes scattered , and visited such places of Interest as were selected , calling at the "Carey Mansion , " where the gev- ornor of Van Couver's Island rcstdor , and at a seasonable hour returned to sleep aboard the steamer for a 4 a. m. start : back to the United States and homeward. Upon the Straltg do Faca the sunlight shone in all Ita splendor , and the rolling banks were attired In spring flowers and diversities of evergreens , which framed In Irregular hills and bine mountains in the distance , present a landscape of rare and radiant beauty. The shores ore dotted with homes and pretty villages , with here aad there a town llko Port Townsend , of some pretensions - tensions , with its neighbor Fort Townsend - send , whore two companies of the second United States infantry have their camp ; and upon the east shore of the sound , on the hills running down to Elliott's bay Is SEATTLE. n thrilling , active , beantlful city of 10- 000 inhabitant , all anxious to outrival Tacoma and become the railroad torrnin- us of the Northern Pacific. The trade by steamer of Seattle is Immense , and the lumber interests can only bo described ai limitless. Farther north on these waters reid many saw mills. Ono the party visited was of ouch proportion , capacity , extent and pecfectlon of construction that ita truthful description would bo read by thoeo of yon who live upon the pralrlo sections of our vast country with Incredu lity ; therefore lot it ba said that "eyo hath not seen , oar hath not heard" the story of its liko. At Seattle Mr. H. Beochor , son of the I'Lyjiouiii MUGWUMP , of Tilfon fame , loft the steamer. Ho had a tussle with other aspirants for the Port Townsend UNITED STATES COLLKCTOKSIII1' , which Is now onpposod to bo settled in his favor , na It Is understood that [ inr. Cleveland will apppoint him. Upon the return trip across iho Straits do Fuel universal attention iraa drawn to a lady and two young girls , whoso modesty of demeanor and true gentility of beating were especially notionablo. The younger girl was engrossed In a book , evidently of en amusing character , as her repeated smiles brought most pleasingly Into vlow the pretty dimples of bor rounded cheeks , The older of the girls , perhaps fifteen yoirs of ago , won man'a admiration. ona every She was a marvel of unconscious beauty , a vision of angelic loveliness. The mother would not permit the " * rlnds of heaven to visit her cheeks too roughly. " She was in the dawn of Hfo with all its loveliness around her , and yet sbo seemed so pure that here very bluah that sought to hide its ro bat disclosed tbo vestal deity that od beneath It. Every dl'ort to learn the name and residence of this lovely HIGHLAND LASSIE was fruitless , except of bitter dlsipolntp- ment and each left p.o there , ono with ro- gtot. Had it not been that your corro- tpoudcnt feared 'twould offend , ho would have asked the name of this daughter of the northwest , whoso mother might , llko Homo's proud matron , most justly declare - clare "those are my jewels. " The town of NEW TACOMA Is looming up npon the BOD thorn horizon ; the waters of Pngot Sound are rolling about the good steamer , with their cristed waves and merry fish and fowls , ducking and diving , In their searcher food ; the rays of the declining sun begin to touch the hilltops , along whoso grassy sides the farmer boys are hurrying home : tne milk cows ; the distant peaks are cast ing their lengthening shadows across the ! face of the waters , and the red light of phosphorus glares and ( lathes as the ship goes plunging through the billows of IPa seemingly burning tea. At be wharf a line of carriages , at by "mino host , " Mr. William D. Tyler , or the elegant "Taeotna" hotel la awaiting to carry the excursion - to Us spacious parlors and verandat , whore a vlow of iho spreading waters and the monarch Mount Taeotna reels the man ; and later the waitersitato washing forever the graveled walks , will lull each traveler to sleep. And as the cattbonnd train will take these rambling notes attay across the mountains and the plaint , absent friends hero commission mo to say to beloved ones there , " nil Is well ! and all are happy. " D. C. R , THE AOVENTISTS NO ! TIME SET TEttS. To the Editor of the UKE. I noticed an article in a late icano of P paper relative to the Maine fanatics , ou . were willing as at other times to publish the doings of a few fanatics who j"1 have sot the time for the Lord to come . , at different periods. Wo have had fanatics j ics among ns all the way along , and there seems to bo n wonderful willingness on the part of the press and pulpit to make the Advontlats as n body responsible for the doings of a few fanatics. Bnt I think I see In these who seek to injure us , the prophotio scoffers that Christ and the apostles said would come In the last days , See 2 Peter , chapter 3. These scoffers make ono of the last signs to bo fulfilled , and these poor fanatics offer the right kind of feed for thcsa scoffers to food upon. Sco Christ's words in Matthew 21:48-51 : , which are being fulfilled by the presi and pulpit. As I know something about Adventlsts I fool that I have n right to speak , and say what I know by reading the Bible ; and ono thing I know Is , when the doctrine of Christ's second coming is preached , It will bo as nn welcome to the Pharisees of io-day , as to the Pharisees of Christ's timo. They had their traditions to support , oven if it made the word of God of no effect , as Christ told them. Wo moot with the same opposition with the same class of people to-day , but wo can bear this if our opponents will only toll the truth. But that foolish story that goes the rounds of the press and pulpit about asionslon- roboa , is never spoken of or believed by Christian people of common sense. It is started in malice by a few to give the many a chance to ECO IT. Wo have offered § 500 for a proof that even ono of these time fanatics ever put on any kind cf a robe to go up In , This has boon a stand- lug offer for forty years , and no person has over had the face to come forward and furnish the proof and claim the money' . No person yet over saw an ascenslon-obe , and what yon have published about the aeconsiou-robos of these fanatic will turn out the same. A foolish act will generally beget a foolish lie , as in this case and other similar ones. ones. Our people an a body do not approve of ttmo setting , and have no sympathy with these who do such , but wobolieve tha ? are living in the latter days. Wo have nroof for our claim , and _ invlto the pub lic to prove otherwlso , and wo will sub mit. Wo also claim that the tenth chap ter of revelation has been fulfilled by Win. Miller , and for proof I cite you the following , wo read In the eleventh chap ter , , of Daniel , fourth verse : "Bnt thou , O ; Daniel , shut up tbo words and seal the book , oven to tbo time of the end ; many shall rnn to and fro and knowledge shall bo increased. " And also in the ninth verso : "And ho said , go thy way , Daniel ; for the words are closed up and sealed to the time of the end. " And now In the tenth chapter of rovehtlon wo find an angel having In bis hand a lit tle book open , declaring that time should bo no longer. Have wo any proof in the bible where that book has been opened only in the tenth chapter of revelation ? No. And for further proof read the last verso of the aamo chapter : "And bo said unto mo , thou must prophesy again before many pooplep , and nations , and tongues and kings. " \Vm. Miller's prophecy was based upon the 8th chapter , 14 versa of Dan. The Almighty has noror allowed judg ment to come upon tbo human race with out a warning. Sodom and Gommorrah were warned of their visitation , and yon nlll find it so all through the scriptures , and if our enemies would invostlgata the matter more fully , they would have less room to scoff. Probably other denominations have less taro-sowers among them to contend with , but wo loam from Christ's parable that the devil don't sow tares In the woods ; It is only on good ground , and where tbo wheat Is growing. Hoping your fairness will permit you to publish this article so as to sot the matter in its trno light , I remain Yours very truly , W.M. S. BUTTEUBAUOII. IOWA CITY , la. , May 17. AN EMPKkJBM SHOPPING. The Sail Figure of Eugenia as Scon a London Hnliordnshcr'fi , London cor. Philadelphia Times. 1 have seen a thing quite mnrvolous in its way. I have seen a far-cff result of a great war , of the disthronoment of a reigning sovereign , of tha exile of hove lost Inhabitants of the Tuilcrles. I have seen the ox-Empress Eugenie sitting up at the counter of au upholsterer's shop pricing a curtain silk , fooling it to verify [ the value of its texture , objecting to its color , asking to bu shown something else something of the same kind only differ ent ; a Httlo moro so , in fact , or perhaps not quite so much , exhibiting , as ono may say , the very indecision of plain Mrs , Jones or Brown , who wishes to get full value for her money and is not going to make a mistake if she can help it , Yes , there she sat , the beautiful Eagonlo do Montijo , Comtesso do Toba , ox-em press of the French , now called , when traveling , the Comtesao do Piorrefonds. .1 was walking rapidly down the aislp of the shop , myself bent on the acquisition of curtain materials for the decoration of my own lodgment , when my eyes fell up on the Imposing form and the striking features of the empress. At first I thought I must bo mistaken , for who would dream that a sovereign oven an ox ? would so lese sight of the divinity that doth hedge a king as to sit down at an upholsterer's counter and hold con verse with ono of the salesmen ? But there could bo no mistake. It was she , Those are indeed days of social upheavals. She was dreesod In the deepest mourn ing , the widow's garb. The long weep ing "fall" of crape depending from Per bonnet was somewhat lacking In fresh ness , just as it U with plebeian widows after a few woariugs in this molsty , inlaty climate of Great Britain , er cashmere cloak trimmed with crape , as drawn In at the waist behind , the better to adorn a figure which Is still symmetrical t- ted rical , and the beautiful , taper-fingered hands were Incased in black gloves which fitted without a single wrinkle. Nor was tbil celecratod lady devoid of eomo comblanco of a couttly surrounding. Throe Indies accompanied her , , and by their differential manner plainly showed bow far above- themselves they hold the hletorio pcrtocngo with whom they had the honor to bo associ ated. In London , during the courao si.of ofn long residence , ono eeoj so tunny poten- ? tfttos , reigning or having rcluodso many | Serene liighncaaos , ( and also such numbers bon of disturbed once ) so many prlnco- llnp of this sort , and that , so many "high-placed" and "well-born" Individuals uuli , etc , , and so on that ono king or qnoon in oillo , moro or less , Is not a matter to wax eloquent about. Bnt Eugenie buying curtains in that far from aristocratic locality , the Tottenham court road ! At n shop , too , whoso very main spring of existence is its cheapness com bined with beauty. HOLDING DOWN A In n Shanty with ttio Pouring ThrotiRli the Cracks , To the Editor ol the BEE. The loiter of Jeremy Trno to the Now York Sun as published In the Bui : , eon. corning tchool marm homesteaders in Nebraska , has reminded mo of "tho days of yore , " of ton and twelve mile horse back ridoa between the paternal ranch and school , of the loneliness that all suf fered from coming as I did from eastern homos to a land that then scorned but grass and sky ; the homes were BO far opart ; of the linoat sunsets nnd the grand * eat pralrlo fires that wo shall ever see , and of the era of social freedom and great expectations that wo enjoy In anew now country , and lastly of the iloas , flies and mosquitoes of said now country. I was teaching ono wet summer some twenty miles from homo and ono day re ceived a postal card which road some thing llko this : DEAH Sin : Your house has fallen down. Must pot up another , CHAS. I wasn't a bit troubled by the house the first was sod , the next was a shanty twelve by twelve , with door nnd window and well ventilated. The last night I spent under Its thin roof , It looked llko rain , bnt in a day or two moro 1 should have been absent from the claim BIX months and that would never do. So Charles drove mo out to the place and "at early candle light" I wont to bed with my boots and ulster on in the shanty en the " 80" for the last time. The bad was a good buffilo robe and an armful of hay , and broth er Charloa had spread bis umbrella ever my head and inquired If I was all right before ho loft to find oholter at a neigh bor's , for it had just begun to rain. I slept oweotly , in spite of the drip , drip , of the rain on the umbrella , and was home next morning In time for breakfast after a ton-mile rido. Of course , 1 don't ogreo with Jcramy True , when ho says of the girl of the ahcol-marm homesteader class : "Sho does not make so desirable a wife aa ono who is not quite so strong-minded , and docs not know a bad bargain from a good ono. " J. T. may prefer a wife who don't know much , but It seems to mo that a girl who don't knon'"a bad bargain from a good ono" will not bo apt to make tuch a poor Investment when she nnirlos as some womun do. According to J. T. these Nebraska girls' children should inherit tome aenao and plnck , and bo cf some use in the world. That coming years may prove this correct is the hope of M. IN A FIIEE UAOB. The Most Exciting of All the Sports in India , India Letter to the New York Clipper , Pony races and foot races appealed but little to the natlvo mind , but the camel race , open to all corners , was n mutter of the warmest interest to all , both Eugllsh- raen and native ? , the mudir himself , with n large following , attended the meeting , anil was the most enthusiastic on the sabjoot of the race , and had en tered his bast camel for it , his example being followed by the owners of all the boat camels. The scene at the ttartlng point was quaint in the extreme. Oiinols were there of every slza and hue , bellowing ono and all as though in direst agony , some of thorn be stridden by English soldiers on their red leather saddles ; some by officers who preferred the com fortable Soudan saddle ; some by naked Biacharl or Abebdoh , tons of the desert , who not unfreqaontly , disdaining saddles of any kind , eat perched on the romp of the animal as on a jakass , and guided their beasts by the nostril string alone. Hero and there among the crowd were Bashi Bazouka of slim-nocked , slender- legged anlmols , whozo rich accoutrements showed that their owners found war a pjylng trade , and town folk who , poichod on light wooden saddles , tholr long robes wrapped cloeoly round tbcir waists , In tended evidently to make a desperate struggle for victory. At last , profiting by a movement when all the competitors seemed to ba in line a result to obtain which had taken eorno three-quarttra of an hour the signal was given to go , and the camels started. Then some trotted , some gal loped , some turned themselves round and round , socking to tlo them selves in knots and refusing to move forward , other * throw thomcolves on the ground and rolled their riders off , and 0110 or tire , dicengaglng themselves from the crowd , started oil' In a mad , break neck gallop tonard the bills , tholr riders , albeit wild sons of tbo doeort , nn- nblo to do moro than cling to the beaats for dear life. Every now nnd then oc curred a terrific collision between two eager competitors , which flung both camels and riders to the ground. As the bsasts rounded the turning post the confusion became proportionate to the excitement. Many camels never got aronnd the post at all , bnt fell to lighting ono with another on the far side of it , in which conflicts tholr riders , when natives , took part with right good will. Others sought to cheat , diminish ing the dlaUnco lOQy yards or so , bnt these defaulters weio promptly spotted and hounded off the coarjo by the watch ful stewards The winner was greeted as bo passed the post by such cheers as completely disconcerted the poor brute , and had not bis rider warily forestalled him lie would bavo turned back from fright before the crowd.
