This Introduction to the Tnbnno readers would bo wholly unnec essary but for the miraculous natnro of the stories whlcn are to follow , and which , says Oapt. Paraollo , "Aro aa true and euro as that the nun is now shining at ns hero on my dock. " The conversion which had preceded thcso wondotfal tales had referred to the storm wave lately encountered In mid ocean by the Germanic. The cap tain explained what sort of a sea it was. "Iho newspaper called it a tidal wave , " ho said , "but it was nothing of the sort. Tidal waves only occur In bays , hrths and rivers which are so situated as to bo peculiarly sonaltlvo to the influences of the moon and of gravitation. At least , thut is how meteorologists explain them. But though I have studied tholr theories with laborious care , I have en countered tidal waves that had an orlgn far moro subtle than In the local situa tions that make water especially excit able. able."For "For instance , I saw a tidal wave once from a high bluff on the banks of the Ganges. It was n perpendicular wall of water advancing at the rate of abont twenty miles an hour. It was perfectly straight , except at the very top , where It crested into a foam that had not strength enough to fall. It was about seventeen feet high. That was a pure tidal wave , and I have never yet been able to work out its origin or o uso. "Now a storm wave , such as struck the Germanic , Is a very different thing , and is explicable upon thoroughly well de fined meterologlcal principles. The wind in a firat class ocean storm Is hopelessly erratic. 1 have known it to blow from every point of the compass within half an hour. It blows with terrible force , and , of course , creates tremendously heavy seas in every direction whence it blows. The sea recovers very slowly , so that after the wind has veered from south to north , tbo seas como at you In engulf ing waves In every conceivable direction. Now , there is a point whore the influence of all these seas nnite , producing a wave that reaches incredible altitudes with a force that Is simply irresistible. That is a storm wave , and that Is what knocked the Germanic. No seaman can locate it , and if you happen to bo In its path , all yon can do is take it. "Havo I over encountered one ? Well , I should say so. I don't often tell those stories , for if a man tolls many of thorn he is in danger of losing his reputation for voracity. The yarn I am going to spin now , however , Is truo. It is my own experience , and whether anybody believes it or not , Ic is so. Thirty-throe years ago I was the chief officer of a 900- ton ship. Wo sailed between London and India Ono evening , when a few hours out from London , In the English Channel , the tlmo came to rellovo the watch. That iraa 8 o'clock. The sky was a llttlo murky , but not absolutely cloudy. The channel waters were calm. The breeze was fresh , blowing from the west at such a rate as to compel us to sail under a reefed mainsail and double- reefed topsails. On our lee side was a brig. My captain and I were standing together on deck. I had given orders for the watch to be called , and they were then assembled on the poop deck. The captain said to mo , 'Mr. Parsello , 1 think the light ought to bo visible by this tune * meaning the Eddystono light. 'Suppose I go aloft and look'I answered. "I wont np the rigging until I got about sixty feet aloft , and suddenly when just In that perilous position , I heard a terrible shout from the deck. I looked down to see what was the matter , and just as I did so , a mountain of water struck us amidships. It picked me right off my foot , and hurled me clear through the rigging , and flattened mo against the mast , whence I fell down Into the main top. The rest of what happened I dis covered after my recovery. The wave took off every strip of rigging and canvas , all tbo yards , boats and arms , and loft the ship with only her mists standing. Wo ran back to the Isle of Wight , and anchored in the Soleut 'to ascertain the oittnt of the damage , and then we dis covered the most wonderful thing cf all , The ship had been scathed with copper , and that wave had stripped its top shoe ! ( iff for eighty feet of the ship's length , a : clean as a mechanic's ahoara could have done I "How did it happen ? Don't ask mo 1 suppose there might have been a little hole in the copper , and the water wai forced into It with such Immeainrablc power as to have the effect I have de scribed , But you remember I told yon there was a brie to the looword of us. The next morning wo saw her lying astern of us In the Solent. Her mastt were gone , and if an army of carpenter ! had been at work clearing of her dock , they conld not have loft her more barrer. than that wave did. Her watch hac boon swept overboard and every man ol them lost. "Well , that was a storm wave foi yea , but I struck one In 1877 that wa. much more remarkable. I was off thi coast of Japan , captain of ono of thi fines steamships afloat. Wo were In i typhoon. They call them typhoons there but tboy are Identical In character will our own cyclone and the African tornado It was an awf al itorm , the worst I eve saw. The wind howled and shrieked am raved like a million demons loosed fror the Styx. The seas strqggkd with oacl other for our poatosaion , and roarei the moat Infernal noise , as they brok ever ns In merciless force. Th sky was inky , but not a drop of wate fell , My chief officer and myself wer standing on the bridge directing the heln : Suddenly directly In front of us , about hundred yards away , I caw & moat prod I gious mountain of water. Its toworln croat was lashed into a white foam , an appeared juat between the two yards c the mast. Above the hellbh din of th storm I could hear the awful baas roar c that monster wave as it come toward c like a steam engine. I turned to in officer. His face was as white as chaU " 'Here's the lut of our good boat , m * boy , ' I said , and turned her nose rlgl into the wave. > ' "Hot brow rose until wo were almoi potp ndlculor. I almost thought wo should be thrown over. The crest struck ns and blinded me so that I could not sso. And then , so sure aa I am an honest man , her bow fell and her keel rose , and wo passed ever that most terrific wave as gently as a chip ever a mill p nd rlpplel 1 never WAS so dumbfounded In my life , for I fully expected that moment to bo the last that ship would over know. These two yarns , mind yon , are my own personal experiences , and I give my word of honor for their truth. " A Wonderful Froafc of Natnro Is tometlmos oxhlbitod in our public exhi bitions , When wo gaze upon some of the peculiar freaks dame natnro occasion ally Indulges In , our mluds revert back to the creation of man , "who Is so foarfally and wonderfully made. " Tbo mysteries of his nature hare boon unraveled by Dr. H. By druggists. Mrs , Vice-President Homlrloks. National Republican. "Mrs. Hondricka wishes you to walk up stairs , " said the colored man who had taken our cards at Wlllard'a. Up ono flight wo wont and down a long , low hall. Behind ns promenaded a couple of wait ers carrying trays. They were conversIng Ing In a stage whisper. "Jim , " said ono , "doy scz do wico prosldunt luok do rooms way down do far and obdls corridor cnzo bo's feared uv bolng saashmtod. Toke do ttoam Inline away an do cars stop short , " concluded the second voice with a smothered guffaw. By this time we were entering tno vice president's rooms. A choorfnl light from the center chan delier pervaded the rather small parlor and flashed from the mirror-faced book case in ono corner. The open grate fire , although homelike , woo oppressively hot. Mrs Hondricks received ns cordially and introduced the vlco parsldent , who shook bands , smiled amUbly , made several harmless , fiiendly remarks , and then re sumed his seat with n dutiful air which seemed to say : "Look at my wlfo. She's ' captain. She'll ' do the talking. I play second fiddle. I've followed her advice all my married life , and eoo what I am to-day. " Then Mrs. Hondiicks presented several congressmen and haf } a dozen raddy-facorj , beaming , loojo-jointed , Hooalor giants in baggy clothes , who wore all crowded up all together on ono sofa. They were evidently office seekers , who in fancy were already feeding in Uncle Sam's ' pantry. A fair haired , inof fensive looking private secretary wrote at a desk in ono cornor. It was evident that ho was made to know bis place. Mrs. Hendrlcks were a handsome black silk and a bnnch of fresh flowers at her waiat. Although not young , the vlco preaidont's wlfo is erect and elegant in form , swift and elastic in movement , with rich , black hair , dark , glittering eyes , strong , sharp features , and a spring lock mouth. She Is In temperament the exact opposite of her husband , who , without her in domitable will , restless ambition , and hard , practical view of life to constantly ferment his amicable quiesenco , would to-day bo plain Mr. Hendricks , tbo In dianapolis lawyer. In short , the vlco president and bis wlfo are ono , and Mrs. Hendrlcks Is that ono. Aa papa Hon dricks leaned comfortably back in a rock er , his mild blue eyes , amiable , weak mouth , and placid white face utterly void of force formed a striking contrast to his high spirited nervy wife , who scarcely sat down for a moment , so eager was she to successfully manipulate the political wires abont h r. Health , Wealth and Happiness Axe moro Intimately connected with a sound stomach and good condition of the blood than most people suppose. Thin blood means weakness , languor and mis ery. A dyspeptic stomach means all the horrors yon can think of. Brown's Iron BItters means enriched blood , good di gestion , healthy appetite' , sweet sleep and vigorous strength. Mr. Henry Hallam , South 17th street , St. Lqnls , says , ' Brown's Iron Bitters relieved mo of dyspepsia , pnrlfiod my blood , and gave mo an appetite. " Thousands of others testify in the same way. An Island of Cannibal Crowe. Letter in Rural Home : On the lower ridge of the Japanese Island of Sade is a fine growth of pine trees , the homo of crows innumerable. The number is re markable , even in this land of crows. In the morning a great whirrinc ; of wings , discordant cries and a block cloud of those birds flying over the city toll that they were cff on a foraging expedition , no one knows whither. In the early evening by the same token their return is proclsimed. They seem to move in organized companies and almost military style , a "many wintered crow" at the head of each battalion "leads the clang ing rookery homo. " In appearance they resemble the raven moro than the com mon craw. They are not an unmitigated I nuisance , as- they are good scavengers. Bat still there is such an army of them , the question often arises , on what do they subsist ? It is a well-known fact , however , that tboy are cannibalistic In tholr tendencies , the sick and feeble ones being devoured by the strong. . FOR SICK UEADAOHE , Dn. K. S. READ , Chicago , says : "I think it Is a remedy of the highest value in many forms of mental and nervous ex haustion , attended by sick headache , dyspepsia , and diminished vitality. " Tlio Supply of Wool The president ot the English Board of Trade declares that there has been a de crease In wool-growing in Belgium , Hun gary , Germany , and Austria ; also a do * crease , not so marked , in Franco and Great Britain and Russia. In Italy there is a largo Increase In wool-growing. Australia has Increased her wool crop from 344,000,000 pounds in 1874 to 510,000,000 pounds in 1884. English manufactures of wool remain the same now aa ten years ago an annual con sumption of 357,000,000 pounds. Lon don , howo/er , is the great wool market of the world , bnt of the amount Im ie ported and again exported , Europe now at sends only 8 Instead of 10 per cent , and to South America 4 per cent , pgatnst e a. former 7 per cent. A BEOIUENT OF EMPLOYES. The Increase in the number of officers , clerks , messengora , &o. , of the senate and house cannot bo stated exactly , be came the old official registers contain the names of the regular employes only. Of these the senate In I860 had fifty-oli and the house eighty-three. If the clerks and others employed during the session were added tbo numbers would bo increased about 50 per cent. Daring the last session the senate had 233 men on Its rolls and the honso 281. But the increased expenditures of con gress are not altogether accounted for by the lengthened ptyrolle. There ii an other impoitant factor , and that Is the increased liberality of congress to them selves and their henchmen In the matter of pay. WHERE THE MONET GOES. Twenty-five years ago the pay of con gressmen was $3,000 per annum. It Is now $5,000.
