Stocks Decidedly more active to-day , and ,
on the -whole , somewhat irregular and at
times feverish , There was exhibited a great
deal of strength , the result of the day's opera
tions showing decided gains over laat evening.
After 11 o'clock the market became more
quiet and prices were comparatively steady
with a tendency toward lower prices , but after
1 o'clock there was a sharp rally , after which
It again became dull and about steady , and so
continued until late In the day. In the last
half hour the whole ilist became strong and
advanced J@J per cent for active stocks , the
market finally closing strong at or very near
the highest quotations reached , The only
active Gould stock was Union Pacific , which
ro&o srom 48J to 49J , a gain of 11 per cent.
