Some Statistics ot
the Trade.
N , Y. Tlrnw.
If all the foreign green fiult Imported

bo piled up in n pyramid In the Oily Ball
Patk It would simply stun the oltlzou
who occwionally buys a batnna Irom one
of the many ttinda that line the tide-

deeaorU E ch year the amount of frntt
landed at thr * peon Increase largely , bat
it ia not all the ftult that la shipped , nor
does It all find ft market. The trade IB a
precarious one , and the Importers do not
make as much money as would naturally
bo supposed. The successful merchant it
the ono who o n stand the npa and downs
of the trade and Is prepared to moot heavy
losses. Yet the number of now firms
springing tip In the city la moro than pro
portionate to the Incroaeo In the amount
of ftuit brought in. The fact of tha un
certainty of the trade dee > not soooi to
dolor young mon without exporter ce
from embaiklng In the business. One
shipload may como into part In on excel
lent condition and the fruit brln fair
prices , netting n neat little sum to the
Importer. Tlio next load may ba worth-
lots en arrival , and the profit of the first
Is wiped out in the lees on the
second.
The percentages In loss of ftult on the
voyage are , however , much lots now than
In the days of sailing vestoli- , and exper-
innco in the time of cutting and method
of bringlrg , of course , tend to make the
locses lighter. But of late another
cause has como In to lesson the chances
of the importers. A glut in the matktt
is not now uncommon , and toveral bit ;
shiploads are hablo to nrrlro In town the
same day. Green fruit will not keep ,
and a sacrifice bat to bo made in price to
cot rid of the load. Moro fruit is con
sequently sent into the interior. It has
bein found practicable to thip large
quantities by rail , and now How York
supplies the north , whllo a good deal is
sent on toward the west. New Orleans
is the great supply market fcr the Treat ,
however , and many carluads are sent into
the Mississippi Valley section and to
Chicago on the arrival of fruit steamers
Carloads of bananas have even been sent
as far west as Omaha , arriving with the
fruit in good shape. This branch of the
business is increasing rapidly.
J. H. Bosbwlck , the cuatoms inapeotor ,
who has charge of the fruit department
in the Hew York eastern house , each
year prepares a report of the amount ol
green fruit imported Into tbia c > untrf
Ills compilation for the year ending
March 1 shows an increase la the princi
pal varieties of fruit imported , except in
oranges from thu Mediterranean , the
falling off in that line of Importation
being probably duo to the increased pro
dnction of this fruit in the south , as well
as the constantly growing supply from
the West India Islands. The fruit from
nearer homo is just as good and arrives
in a much better condition. Although
there has been a considerable increase lu
the quantity of fruit brought into this
port , the amount of revenue to the Cus
toms department has fallen off. Thin IB
due to the fact that the increase of im
portation has boon of the frui's ' on the
free list. The total value of the green
fruit received in Now York by import i-
tion during the past year amounts to $5-
067,851 , whllo the duties received aggre
gated $690,882 41. The increase in
value over 1883 Is 8332,404. with a de-
create In customs duties of $54,482.33.
If the books of the importers coald bo
looked over their receipts would be found
largely out of proportion to the increase
in fruit. The past year has not been a
very profitable one , and as In previous
years many have hardly come out even.
The Importers engaged in the trade with
the West Indies. Central and South
America , and the Mediterranean are re
potted to have been loiers to the extent
of many thousands of dollars. This loss
is mainly attributed to the excessive 1m-
porta ions of fruit , causing the supply to
exceed the demand and , of course , bring
ing about the depreciation In price. The
condition of the fruit on airlyal has been
better during the year than formerly ,
owing to the increased number of ateam-
era ompUyad In the business. Of bana
nas the importation frcm the Wtnt
Indies , Central and South America , ac
cording to Air. Bostwick's report , con
sisted i f cargoes and parts of cargoes of
87 sailing vtesjls and 205 stearin rj. Of
these SO cargoes ( .nd parts of cargoes aid
50 steamora wore from Barncjo , and
comprised 007,756 b inches of red
bananas , of which 151,038 bunches per
ished ob the way. From
Port Llraon 804693 bunchoi
of yellow bananas w ro racolvod
From Jamaica 290,123 bunches , from
Poit Antonio 242 251 , from Poit Maria
158,041 , from Kingston 151,162 , from
Montrg i Biy 89.80J , and from St. Ann's
Bay 79,351 bunches , mating a total of
1,824,401 bunches of follow bananas , of
which 291,918 bunches wore lost on the
voyages , equal to 1G per cent. The yel
low bananas imported show au increase
of 1,177,884 bunchoj. There was a de
crease of 4 sailing vessels and an Increase
of 56 steamers In the trado. _ There wore
cceivc-d 123,445 bunches 'more of the
Batacoa red fruit .than during the pravi-
ous year , and there was a decrease of 02
sailing vessels , with an Increase of 36
stosmtn.
Since the advent of eteamera In the
trade the bananas hare been received in
much bettor condition. Still there Is
danger of the bunches of green fruit be
coming "cooked" on the passage to New
York. The fruit all nu to cross the
Gulf stream , and the steamer. ) ara hot.
To prevent this fruit steamers are now
being fitted up with improved systems
of ventilation , and yccsols of greater
speed are being built for the trade.
There is no reason why the time of passage -
ago from the Wett Indies should not be
greatly shortened In this respect. Hith
erto the fralt steamers have been of a
clew pattern and exceedingly hot. The
banauns liave been piled up beloir the
dtoke , wlueo hardly a breath of wind
could strike them. The loss on rtd ban
anas has been 25 per cent daring the
year. Besides the importations men *
tionod ttirty-nlno cargoes of Aipinwal !
bananas were received , comprising 273-
404 hunches , of which 19 per cout per
ished on the voyage.
Of cocoinuts 17,211,888 , were Imported
last year. Eight per cent constituted the

to 3,065,218 , nuti. As usual , Baricoa

From Medltonancan ports wore 10-
) f ivcd cirgoos and parts of cargoes of
260 English steamers , and S3 cargoes by
sailing vessels of oranges and lemons. Of
the former there were 042,841 boxes ,
and of lemons 1,316,868 boxen , or 228-
554.860 oranges and 263,372.600lomoni ,
The loeses were 37i per cent for the for
mer and 17 per com for the latter. Tbo
decrease of oranges over the preceding
year was 34,700,100 , while 107,331,300
nero lemons were brought over. From
West India ports and South and Central
America 35,439,900 orano.es were Im-
lotted , an Increase of 2,289,537 over
.883. _ Tlio loss was 33J per cout.
The importation of grapes was 57,500
mrrols from Mediterranean ports , with
an average loss of 20 per cent , Corn
ered with 1883 there was a decrease of
iO.400 barrels.
The growing liking for pineapples is
shown by the Increased Importation of
30,978 plnos over the preceding year , the
: oUl number received amount log to
3,301,696. This fruit came ia the larg
est quantities from Havana , tlthouph all
the West India ports furnished their
inola. Besides the green pineapples.
515,880 cans of pineapples were received
from Nassau. A good mauy of these
wire afterward sent to England *
Among the importations last yowwore
817 bariols ot apples from Belgium and
1,457 barrels from Nova Scotia. Of the
taror fruits , star apples , custard apples ,
Kuavas , sapodiliaa , pomegranates , ana

Birds In Al
Chicago Herald.
A terrific rain and wind storm swept
over central Mississippi a few nights
since. It came from a northwesterly di
rection and lasted roveral houri , blowing
down trees and outhonroa , and in some
places washed up corn and other seeds
that had been recintly plintod. The
next morning , at Canton and vicinity ,
a number of slrauge birds were found
lying or silting on the ground , some oi
them dead and others crippled from be
ing hurled tgtinst tioes , houses nd other
obstacles Again , others were found ap
parently uninjured , although they teemed
indisposed to fly any conslderibld dist
ance. Upward of a hundred of thoce
birds have been picked up , and is they
are entire strangers to the locality , tbo
supposition is that they were caught up
on the aos coast by the wind and wafted
this way. They are ceitiinly a species of
sea fowl , and resemble the penguin ,
They are about the slza of a teal dactr ,
have a head like tbo game chicken and a
bill like the crow. Their legs are abort
and web-footed ; their wings are also
short. Tbo feathers on the nook and
baok are black and datk green , while
those on the breast aio a bright silver
gray. The birds have no tails , and the
live ones were found either silting up or
waddling , and made no effort to fly.

KIT01IEN REFUSE.
Vessels containing kitchen refuse
should not stand in tbo kitchen ; 'indeed ,
in winter time there is no noecl of any
Bach vessel. Everything may bo burned ,
and from a lanltary poiut of view
should bo. It has boon done by
a good-sized family during cum
mer months , oven to the watermelon
rinds and coflbo grounds. A great as
sistance to such a dltposlt on of was'o '
matter Is a perforated pan cr a small-
sized colander kept in the sink , into
which poellngs of all kind ? , egg ehells
and tea and caflbo grounds may bo
emptied and there drain until the proper
time , which should bo once a day , comes
for their cremation. If other disposition
cf the garbage mast be made there should
be kept two buckets , using them alter
nately and cleansing with a strorg alkali
each ono as it Is emptied. In cither case
such refuse as egg shells , spoiled eggs
and all animal matter should bo con
signed to the flames at once. The water
in which vegetables of a strong odor
have been boiling , aa beans , c&b-
bago , etc. , should not bo
emptied into the kitchen sink.
If there are stationary washstands in the
bouse , and if the plumbing Is not por-
fect. the odor will aacond through the
'
pipe's t ) the very upper stories of the
bni'ding. ' Wherever there is an outlet
there it will iuah , with accompanying
foul gaseay which even a flushing of the
pipes falls to remove. There is nothing
sa deleterious to the good health of a
household as imperfect drainage. With
this disastrous foe to contend withono
may as well teas hygienic rules to the
winds. The drain pipes in most modern
built houses , which are Intended to carry
away foul matter , generally perform the
double office of conducting back into our
dwellings more po'sonous materials in
the form of gases than they carry oat.
ANOTHER ENEMY.
Another enemy to that perfection of
health and strength , which all women
do sire and so few possess , it is bo found
In bisemont kitchen. As a rule they
abound In dampness , and as a natural
result , in mold , that arch enemy to
healthful surrounding * . It forces its
Insidious wsy into cloiot and pantry , it
marks with disease-breeding germs the
jelllep , the fruits , the vegetables , the
bread and fringes the pumpkin pie. It
lines the carpet on the floor and creeps
UD the wall , defacing paint and paper.
Wo brnsh down the mold from the wall ,
wo breathe the mold from the closets
many times In a day. an hour at a time
whllo the periodical cleaning Is going on ;
wo raise the carpet , and are almost
strangled with its pungent odor. Wo

other impoi tent requirement In ttoprcpa
ration of wholesome food is a perfectly
clean , pure cel'ar in which to keep the
every day supplies. It should extend
under every foot of I hi houar , and have
every facility for thorough ventilation
and perfect drainage. Without this it ii
an unfit place for storing food of any
kind , moro especially butter , meat and
milk , they all being absorbents , Even
with thesa provisions a collar may be
come a source of contamination to the
wlula house. Decaying vogotab'os ,
soured fruits and tainted meats should
not bo tolerated twenty-four hours. But

wart called the sldo porch to get fresh
air. This porch was painted a dnll
red , and it had wooden rosotts at the
corners that looked like a bran-new car
buncle on the nose of a social wreck.
Farther up on the demoral zed lumbci
pile I saw , now and then , places whtre
tbo workman's mind had wandered and
ho had nailed on his clapboards wrong
side up and then painted them with tint
paris green that ho bad intended to use
on something else. It wis an odd-look
ing structure. Indeed. If my friend got
all the material for nothing from people
who had fragments cf paint and lumber
left ever after they failed , and then If the
workmonoon3tructed [ it nights for mental
relaxation and IntollrcHnl repose , with
out charge , of course the scheme was n
financial success , but architecturally tbo
honao ia a gross violation of the statutes
In such casoi imdu and provided , nnd
against the plcca and dignity of the
state.
There is a look of extreme poverty
about the structure which a man might
itruggln for years to acquire and then
fall. No ono could look upon It wi lir < ut
fooling a lu attache for the man who built
the house , and probably struggled on
year after year , building u Itttlo of it at a
time as he could steal the lumber , getting
a now workman each year , building u
knob hero and a proturbanco there , put
ting In a three cornet oi window at ono
paint and a yellow tile or a wad of broken
g'asa ' and other debris at another , patient
ly filling in around the ranch with any
old rubbish that other people had got
through with , and pah.tlrg it as he went
along , tiktng wbat was left. In the bottom
of tno pots after hi a neighbors had
painted their bobsleds or their tree boxes
little favou thankfully received and
then surmounting tha whole pile with a
potpourri of rcof , a. grand farewell in-
cubns of humps and hollows , for tbo rain
to wander through and seek the different
colla where the lunatics live who inhabit
it.
I knew of ono thing that I thought
would improve the looks of his house.
Ho eaked mo eagerly what it could bo. I
said it would take a man of great cour
age to do it for him. Ho said ho didn't
rare for that. Ho would dp it himself.
If it only needed ono thing he would
never rest till ho had It , whatever tbat
might bp. Then I told him tbat if he
had a friend- ono ho could trust who
would steel in there some night while the
family were away , and scratch a match
on the leg of his breecnes or on the
breeches of any other gentleman who
happened to be present , and hold it
where it would Ignite the alleged house ,
and then remain thera to see the fire de
partment did not meddle with it , ho
would confer a great favor on ono who
would cheerfully retsl'ate In kind on call.
