' " "BAXXIJNG wirn BUFFALO. A Panic and General Alarm Among the Animal * at the Fair Grounds. St , Lotus Globe Democrat The fair grounds were In their prettiest and most attractive sh po yesterday afternoon when a Globe-Democrat re porter strolled In through the main entrance - trance In search of recreation. The air waa bracing , and tha grass glistened In the warm sunlight with a strength that added greater brilliancy to the verdnre. Avoiding the carnlvora aa he would a can of dynamite , the visitor approached a greater danger , which he realized when startled by a cry of alarm. An enraged buffalo came charging toward him with lowered head and blazing eyes. The shaggy mane floated in the breeze and his mad career was chocked only by a lariat , which trallad in the dost. The eavnge animal was ono ef the twenty-five utcd In the reheartal of Llfo on the Plains , and had escaped with the lasso through the sudden snapping of a saddle girth. Big Dick Johnson , the giant captain of the cowboys , had captured the veteran , whoso acquaintance with tbo lariat dated back only three weeks ago , on the plains of Nebraska. Ho grow furious In his terrible struggle and In a quick dash es caped. The rest of the drove stampeded , and then in the vast grounds occurred ono of the most thrilling scenes ever witnessed. Newly two score of buffalo toro up the ground In their frantic efforts to follow old Bonn , the leader of the herd. The cowboys tried a round-up , and these tactics not answering promptly , they ad opted a most effective means of settlement. In a second end fifty lariats whined In the sio , fifty nooses fell wMi a shrill whistle that Bounded a death knell , and ten of the bnff lo hy prostrate on the ground , with tholr fore and hind legs tied securely In the unyielding lariats. A wild chtsa ensued - sued , as the other buffalo , having once scented freedom , seemed bound to es cape. Around and around the grounds they circled , meeting ihe high fence on all sides , and tnunplng down lessor obi true , tlons. Bat the Mexican vaquerrs were closa behind. Two of the bufhlo , blinded by their fury , -wore rusblug directly Into the saloon of the House of Public Comfort. Doitructlon teemed Inevitable. The lessee stood on the counter with a leveled rifle He was about to fire , San Pedro Bnonovista , prluco of the bull-lighters , challenged him with a force of his raqueros. One moment more and the two monarchs of the plains lay with heaving sides middle- tended nostrils on the floor , surrounded with broken tables and chairs. Ban Pedro BnonevIsU and his band had como In tlmo and with a dim cult low horizontal throw had gained a victory. The other * wore cap tured with less troublf , and the reheanal continued as if nothing bad bappenol. The Indians who assisted chattered and grinned as if the whole B flair was a b > g joko.and Col. The Old Pioneer Company on tlic Eye of Disbandmcnt , The Grand I'arndo to Take IMnco To-Blorrow Afternoon at Two O'clock , The old Pioneer Hook and Ladder company ia on the ore of dlsbnndmont. This ia the oldoat organization of its kind in Omaha , and for twenty-five years the company baa been a fixtnro of the fire department of this city , Daring all this time there has not boon a fire in Omaha but what this company has boon present and at all tlmoa baa rendered valuable as sistance. It la to bo regretted that the old company ia to become a thing of the past but while the progress of the growing city of Omaha demands that a paid com pany should bo engaged to carry on the work bognn and faithfully attended to by the volunteers , the ready and willing spirit which has always characterized the members of the Pioneer company will re * main bright upon the annals of time and after years have past and gone , the do- sondants of the old company will point with justifiable- pride to the heroic deeds of their ancestors when they wore con nected with the first and oldest company in the fire department of Onaha. Many of the charter mem bers of the old company are now prominent and Influential busi ness men in thia city , and whllo they have long slnco withdrawn from the ranks of active service , tholr faces glow and their blood chases through their veins at the mention of the name of the old company. All honor to those who have for years battled with the fiery fiend to save the property of friend and fee alike , and may their various patha through llfo bo atrewn with the rpaos of prosperity and may the sharp points of the thorns of adversity ba cushioned Tf 1th the boda of peace and joy. Yesterday morning a twol re-year-old boy , son of Mra. R , S. Williams , who llres ont near the stock yards , was taken to St. Joseph's hospital and admitted to ono of the wards for care and treatment. The mother and a slater were with him , but they appeared to be perfectly ignorant of the llttlo fellow's trouble and were greatly frightened. Dr. Galbralth was sent for immediately , and on arriving at the hospital and seeing the patient pro nounced his case hydrophobia. It was then learned that about sir weeks ago the boy was badly bitten in hie left hand by a vicious dog , and over since has been disabled by the eoronojs produced therefrom through his arm , breast and shoulders , He states that the dog was gnawing at a bone , and as ho approached the animal it started madly towards him. Ho had his gun along at the time and shot at the dog , but missed his mark , and the next instant was suffering with a torn , lascaratod hand. Saturday last the boy commenced to vomit and have spasms , and refused to tako'food. In fact ho ha- not eaten a mouthful since Friday. When seen by the doctor this morning his eyes were wild and staring ; body constantly quivering and jerking , and the least breath of air would throw him Into a violent spasm. The doctor hold a glass of water before his eyes , and that set him raving crazy. Dr. Gailbratth called in Drs Bryant and Ayers to consult with him on the case , and they readily agreed that the symptoms arc those of hydrophobia , The CIBO is a very sad one , from the fact that the boy Is a very bright , intelligent and handsome little fellow. There are altogether 200 all-star artists , giving six acts at ono tlmo In the nlr , on horseback ) and In the rings a moat wonderful poiformanco. I will name a few of the performers ; the names need hut bo mentioned. There la the Stirk Family , Europo'sgroatostblcycKsts ' , whoso equals cannot bo found ; there are the Leslie Brothers , head balancers ; the Romalls , the Donaldsons , Ada Purvis , M'llo Maretta , the American Trio , etc. In short , fully 200. The Advantage of Settling in ths NewTowa The title "South Omaha" docs not mean the southern part of the city of Omaha.but is tbo name of the thriving town commencing at the Union Stock yards on the south , and extend ing far a milo and a half north , nearly connecting with thecity limits of Omaha. The company have again concluded to put on sale 1,000 lota , and lot the purchasers ol the eamo realize the profit which the enhanced value of thesa loU is sure to mako. It now being an assured fact that South Omaha is destined In the near future to bo the largest live stock market west of Chicago , there can ba no doubt that this property In n few years will ba worth five or even ton times the amount that it can be bought for to-day. Some may ask : If this Is so , why do not the company keep it and reoliro this profit The answer Is , that In order to make lots valuable , there must ue improvements on or ear rounding them , and IM is the case in all naw towus , special Inducements must bo offered Brat to iet ? the paople to take hola and build , There are probably more such inducements offered by South Omaha than were over pn forth by any new town. The largo business done by the stock yards company and the im mense glaughtor and packing houses together with their anxllatiea ore no small feature in , 11 aggregate of events that ate destined to make South Omabu a largo placo. Again , tha town ia not an addition to Omaha , and ia not liable for city taxes , although It enjoys all the benenla from the growth of Omaha that it would if It were just INSIDE the city limits , but being just OUTSIDE , only county taxes are oolloctod , which are meruly nominal , Tn town owns and operates its own water works , which furnish an abundant supply of pure spring water. Dum my trains will run on the B. & M. and.U. P. railways every hour , stopping at the north end town site as well aa at the etock yards. The Thirteenth Btroot horaa cars will run to ll'g park this spring , and to the stock yards at no distant day.
