" lit Corrinthlnrn , 2-2. Thoao are very remarkable words , and they are all tlio moro remarkable because they c mo from such a man aa Paul You all know how ho glorified In his Rabbinical lore , and how ho prided him self on hla Phaross&lcal rlghtoonineia. I anpposo their never waa a moro ambi tions yonng man than Saul of Tarsus , but when ho became a Christian ho laid aaldo all hla am bitious hopes , and all thoio things In which ho had formerly gloried , and waa no longer hla own bat belonged to Christ , and whatever Christ gave him to do , ho waa to perform. This waa the spirit In whish ho wont to that proud and wicked , and yet literary city cf Corinth. Thcro waa no city at this _ tlmo In the world that had moro the spirit of philos ophy , culture and intoltigenco than that of Oorlnth. Bnt Paul went there with none of the spirit of BOphlstry or philosophy. Ho went there simply to know nothing but Jcasus Christ and him cruel tied. The first proposition that wo deduce from thoeo words la that devotion to ono pursuit la the only way to Insure large uuccess. Now wo hear much In thla ate ; of men of ono Idea. They are laughed at , dorldod , and called fanatics. Now wo admit that auch men In some respects are worthy of ridicule , and wo admit that tholr eoclcty may not bo alto gether agreeable to these who hare no great purpose in life , but after all these men of ono Idea are these who leave their Influence In the world and make their mark. Those who devote them selves to different pursuits and employ ments are aoon forgotten , and produce bnt llttlo Impression npon society or tbo world , and no person can aucccad to any great degree nnlesj ho concentrates his energies , nnloaa ho has ono great and and absorbing pursuit before him. Oen the man of business succeed unices ho devotes himself to his business , giving his days to It with absorbing attention 7 AH over thla country I have coon men Trhoso great object la to make a fortune , bravely battling with rovorsea and mis fortune , repairing losses with determina tion and energy. I have noted thla , and said that unless Providence ordered otherwise , euch ontlro devotion will In sure success. It may not ba worth what they expect may prove a curse Instead of a blessing , yet such devotion will suc ceed , generally speaking. Look at Columbus who studied the great problem of the Bphroricty | of our globe , and he was assured and convinced that there waa another continent to be discovered. Ho wont from one court In Europe to another , rebuffed , tidicnlod and derided , He was going to discover a now world , and no power on earth could turn him from hla purpose , and yon know how ho succoedod. Look at the great mventora ; Stephenson - son who Invented the railway and steam car. The great men and aclentists of England were down on him ; they aaid he was a fool , and never could make a ateam engine draw a load of caw. Hla prophecy was very modest ; he laid ho could make an engine draw can ten mlloa an hour over the track. His success has been a noted blessing to the world. Look at Fulton who Invented the toamboat. Perhaps some of yon re member how his boat was the standing * ) ntt of all the jokea that were perpo- rated. It was dorlded in public gath- trlnga and private meetlnga ; no one bo- ieved in it but he waa assured that ho had the idea In hla head ; that success would crown hla efforts at last ; ho wont 'orward In spite of all the obstacles that nrrounded him and you know the re- lUlt. lUlt.Tho The names of these men will Jive fervor - vor In history and science aa the great benefactors of the human race. So It la In great worka of philanthropy. John Howard would ameliorate the con dition of the anfiierlog prisoners In onr jails and prisons , and devoted himself almost exclusively to that purpose , and ho visited jail after jail , prison after prison , pouring a flood of light Into our filthy and dark places and awakening the attention of the world , and his Influence will live forever. This devotion and abajrptlon In ono pursuit Is , thank God , sometimes man- fosted In the Christian church. How waa It with Christ ? Ho had but one thing to do ; the work that hla Father gave him to do. There were some disagreeing heirs came to him once and wished him o decide concording the division of tholr 'ortuno , bnt ho had no tlmo for such bua- nesa ; ho oamo to preach the gospel , and o bind broken hearta , the express work which God had given him to do. Christ "ad no thought while hero on earth except O fulfill his mission and accomplish hla work. How was It with Paul ? Like a racer 10 stripped himself for the contest , and over looking behind pressed forward to ho mark of his high calling , One of the reatest minds In all history and one of ho moat intenae lives that was ever lived ore on earth wa lived by Paul. John Banyan for preaching the gospel o his neighbors waa Imprisoned In the Bedford jail. He wai told that ho might o out at any tlmo If bo would promise iot to preach , but ho wonld make no uch promise. For twelve years ho lay in that jail denied the privilege of apeak- ing , bat ho devoted hla tlmo to writing tha Pilgrim's Progress by which he ac complished a greater , and moro lasting work than If ho had boon at liberty. To Ircumaoribe auch a man prlron bolts and doors had no power. Preach Christ he would , and nothing could prevent him. Look at Wesley and Whltafiold. Do you know why that great body of Christ lana named Mothodista have such a won. derful power In the world ? It arose from the care and scrupulous obaorvance ex erted In its behalf by Wesley and some of hla friends In Oxford. The resolution which they made in the college , and the apirlt which they manifested rrns exerted a power and Influence that has ever re mained with them. How waa U Whltefield crested the ocean again and again , going everywhere through thla country , and England , Ire land , ( Scotland , and Wales preaching the gospel of Jesus Chriil ? He waa deter mined to know nothing among men save Jesus Christ and him crucified. Take the poor cobbler in the little village In England whose mind waa filled with the idea that tbe heathin must have the won of life preached to them. Ho was re buffed when bo proposed Ihe Idea In tb church , bat could each a man bo kep still } No ! He became the first mission ity , and to-day hla name Is reverenced > y every chriatUn mind , Judaon felt called of God to give the gospel to the heathen In behalf of Chris- .Ian America , and had It not boon for llm I know not whether the Baptist ehuroh wonld have been engaged In the great work of foreign miulona. God has ) losaod ns In our foreign missionary en- etprlao moro algnally than any other lonomlnatlon. Moody was considered ao unpromising hat ho waa told by hla paator and other of hii frinda that ho could beat glorify jed by keeping still , and not opening tin month. But ho could not keep still , and to-day ho la recognized aa the great- cat evangelical preacher in the land. These men secured tholr success by de voting themselves entirely to tholr own inrsnit. Had they divided their powers hey never would have attained such ; reat success , Bat if only ono Idea filla o mind , that idea must bo a bravo and nnobllng and lofty Idea. A llttlo idea nd trivial object placed above all others , warfs the powers , ahrivola the affections , nd belittles one's mind. For Instance ho miser. But lot a great idea and lofty concop- lon enter one's ' mind and abaorb the on- rglos ; how the nature oxpanda nnd do- olopa and la ennobled nndortho grandeur f ihls conception. Paul's great idea wni Christ and him rnclfiod. It waa the cruciGod Christ who would draw all men unto himself. 'ho gospel without the crucified Christ IBB no power to change men's hearts. I have no confidence in comln ? hero to > o your pastor except to make this doc- rlno the great staple of my preaching nk. I can say with the apostle that 1 mvo determined on knowing nothing tmong you except Jesus Christ and lim crucified. I want that Christ to bo > resented In my preaching so that every ono of yon will love him nd servo him. 1 have no hops of any uccoss for this church except by loving nd preaching thla Christ and him rnclfiod , and if wo do this faithfully his church will soon bo filled ; our nflnonco will soon bo felt and known , nd we shall bo the wonder and astonish ment of all around us , and our power rill bo felt In every department and sec- Ion of this city , rnd spread out into the nrroundlng regions. "rom the Portland ( Oregon ) News , On Saturday there arrived at the Gilman - man hotel , in this city , a plainly or rather ) Dorly dressed , cadaverous-looking man boat 50 years of ago , who took a dollar oom. Soon thereafter It waa whispered lat the new arrival waa Thomas Cruse , 10 man who hid sold the Drum Lnin- mend mine , in Montana , for $1,600,000. lalf of this amount is said to be deposit- d In the First National bank In this city nd the other half In a Montana Hank. It waa noticed during the millionaire's ireaenco In the house that ho spent no noney that ho could possibly avoid. O nnday he asked where the Catholl hurch was , and , instead of hiring a car- iage and traveling as becomes a man of a ranch wealth , ho trudged on foot to lie church , and back. On Tuesday he eft for his home In Montana. Yesterday a gentleman was mot who now Mr. Gruso well , and said : "Yes , I m well acquainted with him. For the last twenty-five years ho has been a pros- lector in Montana and Idaho , and his ireBont wealth is due to the fact that ho a one of these fellows that got hold and ever let go. " "Why , it's twenty years since he struck ! ie mine that ho sold for over a million nd a half. In order to develop it he would work for a while for others to ob- aln a etiko for grab , tools , and powder. 'hen ho would put in hla time on the mine until hla fnnda were exhausted. " "Finally ho attack pay dirt , and his nthuaiasm knew no bounds , and for hroo or four yoara before no sold ont he made a living out of It. How ? Why , by ixtractlng a few hundred pounds of ore nd taking It to his cabin and reducing It 0 a pulp in a motar and washing It out n a bread-pan. Yon BOO the mine , although rlcn , could not be properly do- volopoc1 without capital. " "Being of a secretive disposition , ho md a door at the entrance of hla hidden roasure which ho kept locked at all times md the minors used to call the place Cruso'd prlaon. " ' "Tho story cf the great richness of the mlno spread far and wide , and big offers were made for It. Among these who made an offer for the mine was Mackay , ) f Bonanza fame , bat the hardy proapec- , or know full well the value of hla find , and would not sell until he got hla fig ure. Grose waa a stayer from away back , and don't yon forget It : Had it been me 1 wonld have sold oat long ago , " "Finally an English syndicate com menced to anglo with the lucky proapec- : cr , and at ono time negotiations reached such a stage that the papera wore drawn lap and read to Cruse , who waa alao rep- osonted by an attorney , A clause in the groemeut waa read by wloh the pnrchaa- r could buy the ono sixth Intereat ho relined - lined , should they so desire. "And Indeed It was , and the failure to accede to the request nude by Cruse cost $100,000 $ extra , and it was several months Before he resumed negotiations. Had the clause been atricken ont five-sixths of the mine could have been purchased for $1,500,000 , but wbon the negotiations were resumed $1,000,000 was asked and received for five-alxtha of the Drum Lnmmond mine. Chicken Hearted Sports in a Coding Ma'n ' in Denver , Two Bout * Between Knnstu City and Denver Bltda Victory for the Imttcr-A Qftla Day fbr 1 Sporting Men. Denver Tiibuno. The sporting fraternity had a glorious day's iport yesterday , it being the occa- ion of the much.talked of cocking main > otwoen Denver and Kancos Oily birds at Broadway Park. The sport was In- ended to Uko place at about noon , but owing to the delays usually attending npon such affair * , the fan did not begin until about two in the afternoon. An hour before that time Broadway wai full of carriages and rigs of all do- crlptlons , and the dust flew from the locf i of many a high-blooded horse trot- ing in good time before stylish equip- goi. There was almost every class and irofosslon represented In the crowd of omo 500 or GOO persons who assembled at JooLowo's place during the afternoon , from the doors of that hostelry down to ho theds , and from the sheds for a con- Iderablo distance down the road wera lowoa and turnouts belonging to thoEO who had arrived in iiruo to see the first > attlo , and all through the afternoon bore wore constant accessions to the , brong , both by the road and on the 31rco ! railway. Besides the sporting element which wont as a matter of business , there were many prominent business men , English oumta , and quite a goodly number of ho fair sex who wont to see the game ilrds make each other's foithors fly. The male portion of the company sur- oundod the pit , and those not fortunate nongh to get at the front craned their necks and jeered around the oars and hlrt-collaw of those who stood In front. THE PIT. Everything went off smoothly , there > oing not a disturbing element. The > attlo ground being outside the olty llm- ts the city police had no occasion to In- orfere with the sport , oven It public plrlt was opposed , which the highly re- poctablo looks of the majority of she crowd Boomed to deny. Shorifl Graham and a number of deputies were present , and aa there were no quarrels or fights to employ their official functions , they had nothing to do. There were twenty-six birds who were taken out to the park , thirteen ropro- online Colorado and the balance coming rom Kansas Olty. The stake wns § 500 on the main and § 100 on each battle. The whole amount 10 be fought for waa $1,800. Betting on side raised it to a sum probably three imcs as great. As both sides wore very onfident , there wes much excitement manifested through every battle , and nt tie close of each there was considerable money changing hands all over the pronnds. The Colorado blrda were owned by D. 'omeroy and Lou Ilothgerbar , and the [ ansai City chickens were handled by A. E. Nller and a well known sporting man of that city , whcsa sobrlquetto is 'Grasshopper Sam. " Only two battles wore really fought bo- iween the two cities , owing to a misun- erttandlncr , and there wore then fought vo battles between Colorado birds , all > nt one of which belonged in this city , tie odd one bilng from Central. Three f the battles were fought to the death , Kansas City , a Central and a Danver Ird being killed. THE FIRST BATTLE. The first battle was between a black listed red bird belonging to Mr. Pom- roy and a red from Kansas City. It was abort and decisive ane was an easy Ictory for Denver. The Kansas City ilrd came out with ona wing broken and rooplng. The next contest was between a dark ed , belonging to Mr. Pomeroy , against pylo from Missouri. This was a oplen- Id battle. Both birds were game , and he chances wore about oven at the tart , but at the first strike the pylo made a false aim and struck Its left ; ff Into the ground , breaking It short ff. It fought gamely with its remaining gaff , but the other bird , a well-matched dversary anyway , was too much with its xtra spur , and a quick stroke breasted ho Kansas City chick and its days were iildod. ' Grasshopper Sam" then throw abrass tack Into the pit against a black-breasted od belonging to Mr. Rotbgorber , and a Ittle fight resulted in the brats-back's aey vanquiabmcnt , audho laid him down o die. The fourth battle was between a dark 'ed chicken from Central Olty and a ilgh-stopp'ng red belonging to Mr. > omeroy. The latter had it all her own way , and a very few minutes ended the aroer of the Central crower. Then came a lively tus le between tweeds eds , both belonging to Denver. It was me of the most exciting battles of the lay , both birds being game and both lancing and striking at each other in fine tyle. The victory was finally awarded o Mr. Pomeroy's bird , Its opponent icing taken away breathless and minus a ; oed lot of feathers. A black-breasted red belonging to 'omcroy ' and a red belonging to Mr. lotbgerber then fought a similar battle rlth the same result and occupying but a ow minutes. Then came what many of the spectators considered a hlpyodromo between a blid elonglng to Mr. Pomeroy and a sort of dunghill creature belonging to "Grass- lopper Sim. " The bird made two or hreo springs at the scrub , when the later or scrambled up out of the pit. His landler caught him and threw him down again , but only to see him turn and fairly run away at fast as a bird could go. This ended the day's sport.
