N - nSi MONTANA TERRITORY , What a Denyerile Thinis of tbe Capi tal of the Territory , Helen * a Played Out rind Dull Town Great IIOBB of Stock Mining anil Agriculture. Conoapondonco Denver Tribune-Republican. B ELENA , Montana , April 27,1885. The town of Helena , where I am now staying , is in cvory w y ( ho capital of the territory. It IB porobod np on tbo northern slope of Mount Helena , and on both sldoa and In the bottom of Last Ohaneo Gnlch , n famous pltcor district In old day . It li bnilt very irregularly and the main ntroot follows the windings of the gulch In a Tory dltagreoablo way. The streets are laid out without any plan , and ono Is very llablo to got lost If not familiar with the town. Tbo population is estimated at about 8,000 and it Is stated that It Is growing , bnt I do not bollovo the growth Is rapid , for real estate is dull and slow of sale. There are a few good bnlldlcgi hero , but very few , the old buildings being mainly one-dory bricks of small alzo. The handsomest building here Is the U , S. nseay office , the high school and ono or two brick business blocks being next. There are also some handsome private residencesbuilt by old timorsXvrho have got rich In tha country. There is nothing pretty about the town anywhere , and I can scarcely understand the enthusiasm with which some people hero regard it , for there is really nothing attractive to ono here , so far as I can see. There are fair water works , Inferior gas works , and an electric light plant employ * Ing thrto dynamos. There are several elootrlo light towera , but as only three lights are put on a tower the effect Is poor. Ono good feature Is the excellent telephone service which connects Batto , Deer Lodge , Marysvllle , and moat of the towns and mining camps within fifty miles of the city with Helena. The Northern PaclGo is BO far the only road to the city , and the depot la vety nearly'two miles from the town , render ing the annoying "bus" service necessary , as of course there are no street car lines. Passengers from Denver and via the Union Pacific , are brought here by an accommodation train from Garrison , the junction of the two roads , arriving here In two and a half days from Denver , There la a good deal of talk about a iall- way connection direct with Bntte , and also rumors of a railway from Bozeman to Butte , backed by the Northern Pacific , and one from Dillon to Gallatln , from the Utah & Northern. The fact of tbo matter Is that Helena Is built in the wrong place. With the Missouri rlvor only twelve miles away , It Is perched upon a hillside , out of the small bnt fertile Little Prickly Pear val ley In which It should have been located There does not seem to bo much energy among the people hero. While the mer chants sit still and grumble , their trade Is being slowly and surely taken away by the IN ot thorn Pacific railroad , rrhlch gives neither Helena nor wholesale ship pers any advantages over small neighbor Ing towns on the ronte of the road. The rates on car load lots of many things are the same aa on email quantities , and the local rate from Helena to other Montana towns Is so great that the wholesale trade hero Is demoralized. Yet no of' fort is being made to correct this by th merchants , and business Is dull In come quonce. Then , too , the charges fo most things hero are extravagant. N < Ohlnaman would oondeicend to black your boots for lets than 25 cents , and al little , things are dear. Even poor whisky coats 25 cents a drink. Socially , the town Is not attractive There are some quite wealthy peopli here , but they give no entertainment ! for oed reasons I presume. Tin boast Is frequently made that Helena 1 the richest town of its slza in the United States , bnt this is sheer nonsense. Tin men who make such boasts have neve eoon much beside Montana , and they seem to have an Idea here that a grea portion of the universe Is embrace within the limits of Montana territory , The general Impression among the "bar naclea" la that Denver la n played oul mining camp. "Society" hero Is cm braced In two clubs , to which only "bar- naoles " "motsbacks " and other , , rem nants of the days of ' 02 are eligible , and I the "Revellers , " the young men's club. The general scarcity of young ladles Is the universal complaint , and I guess it Is true , for I haven't soon any yet. There are numbers of young men here and they have recently organized the Montana club , the ploasautest place In .town. There was great ueed of the club , as there Is abcolntely nothing to do hero in the evenings , the advent of a theatrical troupe being rare. The skating rink Is not fashionable any longer , and the pop ular place of atniuc-mant just now Is the opera house , where the revival meetings are being conducted , I started to toll you about Montana , bnt I have boon saying nothing so far of any portion of It except Helena. The principal resources of the territory are , as you already know , cattle and mining. Of the ranges It seems true they ara gen. orally overstocked , and the lossei" last winter were really excessively great , in some cases reaching over 50 per cent. This statement will , of course , rjijo in dignation In the breaet of any ono inter ested In stock raising here , but I bsllovo It to bo true , although I really depend entirely upon report for my statement. TUB GREAT MINING DAMP. As far as mining la concerned , Butte , the center of the business here , Is dull , because copper Is low ; yet the product oi tbo district Is really Immense probably greater than tbat cf Leadvllle still , 1 cannot recommend Colorado miners to gc to Bulte , for many miners have told me that work Is not plentiful and wages arc low $3 to $3,50 per day. Near Holoni , Ir the principal mines are the Drumlummoi at Marysvlllo , owned by the Montani company ( limited ) of England , and tbi Helena Mining and Smelting company , whoso mines are at Wlokes , tbe principa one being the Alta Montana. The Drum I liimmon mine produces a free milllnf and silver quartz averaging $40 pei The company operate fifty stamps with pans , settlers , agitators anc , o banners manage to aivo about C ( cent. Cost of mining and milling li 0,50 per ton , and the amount treatec ily is about one hundred tons. Neai / Is tbe Olostor mine , alao a very fail roperty. The Wlckes mines product .alena ores , and the Helena Mining anc Smelting company have concentrators ol 225 tons daily capacity and several stacks The shipments of bullion during Marcl aggregated 400 tons. The ore Is rathe i low In grade. The Gregory , Clancy Giant ana other mines near by also pro dnce good quantities of fair galena ores On Ten Mile creek , about eighteen mllti south of Helena , there are a number o : mining claims producing an exceedingly rofrictory mixture of galena , blende am arsenical pyrites. Thwo mines are no * under bond for $200,000. Near Helena a now carbonate district has been discov ered , which icemi to nally have some merit , though I have not yet seen It , and cannot say what Its value ii , AQIUGULTURE. The agriculture Interests of the terri tory sro not largo yet , and the atca available for agriculture is probably not very extensive , bnt there ate eomo fine lands in the Mlssonla valley and on the Sun river , south of Fort Benton. Great complaint is made that wheat cannot now bo profitably grown , since tlio Northern - orn Pacific and the Utah & Northern bting Minnesota , Dakota and Utah wheat Into the territory. There are reported to bo immense coal fields In the territory , but the only section yet opened is the Bczoman , or Livingston field , and the CDO ! from thut is slaty and requires washing before us ing. The Sand Conloo hold , eighty miles north , is good , but as yet out of the roach of transportation. A Clear Head and Strong Heart- , If you muddle your brains with any of the whisky compounds which are sold under the name of 'bitters" and which toper * delight In for stimulants , you do your system Irreproachable mischief. Brown's ' Iron Bitters is not ono of those. It promotes healthy action of the liver , heart and stomach. It cleanses and en riches the blood , and fits the brain for the best mental work. The beat physlcl ans prescribe It , and it is well worthy of a ttial by all , A MAN AS STONG AH AN OX. With tlio Bleeps of Sampson and the Wi ought Iron Fists ol Hercules. Loulnvillo 1'oat , Louisville comes to the front again with the strongest man In the country. His name is John Bernhardt , but ho resembles the dlvlno Sarah lu namp only , though ho b a native of Alsace , in the south of Franco , Bornhardt Is a new comer Louisville and Is now employed In the foundry department of a downtown factory , where his feats of strength are dally exhibited to the astonishment of bis fellow-laborers. Ho Is 27 years old , six foot four Inches high , and weighs 250 pounds , and with no surplus flesh Ho Is not fat , but Is the finest specimen of muscular manhood soon here for a lone ; time. A Post reporter called In to see him this morning , and had a short inter view with the brawny Frenchman. Ho Is of magnificent build , straight as an In dian. His chest Is broad and deep , and his chin and cheek bones indicate great strength ; but his arms are wonderful and around the biceps they measure seven teen Inches. His hands look like bacon hams. His skin it smooth and rod , though he never drinks a drop of intoxi cating liquor of any kind whatever , and was never drunk In his life. Ho gave the reporter a few exhibitions of his strength. Taking a pice of iron , which was afterwards found to weigh foriy-threo pounds , Bernhardt held it horizontally at arms length for sovora' minutes. He then raised a huge piece of ploeo of block iron from the ground and placed It upon the scales. It pulled 864 pound * . Taking a piece of bar Iron two uohca wide and ono inch thick , acd plac eg It against his knees ho bent It doable asy. Ho took hold ol a forty-two gallon arrol of water and , balancing himself gainst a post , ho went through the motions of drinking out of bung-hole. Ho took a piece of seasoned oak about ho slzo cf a wagon spoke , and broke It 1th h's ' hands. He did various other ondoifnl things which demonstrated bo poscsslon of extraordinary strength. Bernhardt says he was never in the jrlze ring , but he eays ho Is not afraid to meet John L. Sullivan or any other nun. Ho professes to bo able to fell n ox with is bare fist , and often killed hogs in that manner while employed In a Chicago lork-packlng establishment. His hands ro as hard as wood , and a stroke from > no of them does not diiFjr from a stroke if a mallet. "Laugh and Grow Far , " Is a precept easily preached , bnt not so 3asy to practice. Philadelphia Call. The throat of war between England and Russia brings out the faot that the vast expenditures of England on heavy iron clads will bo of little advantage , an fast cruisers are likely to bo of more cense quence. Ironclads are found to bo of no more va'.uo for haibor defence than for cruising purposes. Nor are nations likely to match ono fleet of armored ves sels against another. There would only bo in such a corjfllot a question cf tbo weight of the metal , mid this can as well bo tested by the methods employed to ascertain the power of ordnance or the roiistlvo force of metal. It la recognized that there is no good In Imperiling human life while making such tests in actual war. Hence this class of war machinery will play but a small part In the event of war between the powers named. Both are straining their norues to get fast ves sels for cruising purposes. Speed la at important as strength , and , beyond a cer < tain point , more so. There is In this a lesson for us. Ar anxiety has been manifested tc bavo this country compete will : Europe in having a strong navy. . So far congress has been oantioui In this direction , and has rather favorec fast cruisers. A few of these is wel enough. But the lesson that Enropt torches Is tbat we are to be cautious as tc heavy , nnwloldly masses of Iron , and b < rather c refalto got speed. Bnt the mart Important lesson is that experiments navies are costly and unnecessary. Ii our war of rebellion , the llttlo monitoi revolutionized naval Ideas ; and now tht grobablllty U that all the cxdorlmonii In tbo Immense ironclads will go for lit- tla If England has war with Russia Suet are tbo peculiarities of our rapid progresi that It is hard to forecast the partlculai feature of a war. It depends on tin power it bo with , or on apodal condl tfons. Russia will strike at tbe Englisl merchant marine if a war occur * , anc Englend hardly knows bow to prepare t < ward off the blow. Denver Newi , 29. About three years ago Joe Boltman , a cigar maker , moved here from Den Molnoj , Iowa. Joe la a ehrowd' Polish Jew , a good workman , and was not long here boft.ro ho established hltntolf In business and did well. For a whllo ho was on Blake street , then removed to West Larimer , where a Cro burned htm out and placed him In n rather bad con dition financially. But ho was not a man to bo cast down by reverses. Ho opened a factory at 307 Colfnx oveiiuo about ton mouths ago , and alnco that tlmo has been doing a good bnalnoea. At first ho worked ono hand only besides himself , ' ut , as business increased , ho added to Is force until NOW HE UAS rOUUTEEN .MEN EMPLOYED aking cigars , and has a number of ther hands engaged In shipping and < acking. Mr. Bellman has boon handling con dornblo sums of money lately. Ho oops a safe in his place of business and avlng been beaten out of a considerable urn of money by a bank failure , ho has bought it safer of late years to keep his money himself instead of banking it. Last Saturday ho bad $2,940 In his safe. As it was pay day ho was busily mplnycd In making out the accounts of ho workmen. While counting and on- oloplng his money , a stranger entered , nd bought a box of good cigars , paying io cash for the same. Ho had abnnd nt opportunity to study the surround- of the place and especially did ho mark the safe which was opened , and THE MONEY IN IT EXPOSED TO VIEW. The stranger loft and nothing was card of bis call until Sunday afternoon , hnn Mr. Beilman was Boated In his toro reading a paper. The rnme man ailed again and bought another box of Igars. That tlmo he had a conversation 1th Mr. Boitman , aekltg him about his rado , and remarking during his conver- ation that ho ( Mr. Beitman ) was foolish o keep such a sum of money as ho had eon around his store. Mr. Boltman re lied to him , pleasantly and insinuated hat ho was perfectly able to take caio of is own business and very foolishly oiated that ho HAD $2,000 Cf HIS SAFE. Monday evening the man who had pnr- ihased the cigar * and two others entered ho store and called for cigars. Mr. lttman was not protont , ank a boy amod Fred Wolf waited on them. The men remained in the store for about ten minutes , chatting together. They start- id to leave when ono of them said that wanted to sea the proprietor and re- nested tbo boy to call him , which he Id. When Mr. Bellman came in the man requested him to show him some mpty boxes. The boxes were shown ind ono ot the men , who seemed to be xaminlng more closely than the other * ho boxes , suddenly produced one on rhlch the stamp had not been broken. The other two , who had seemed to be isintorested parties , now became greatly nterosted. The stranger who had pur- ihaaed the two boxes of cigars threw back is coat and exhibited a badge , and pro ilaimed himself. Mr. Beitman said he .ad done nothing and was perfectly wil ing to bo investigated. The psendo do oolivo said ho didn't want to Investigate my further , as the box on which the tamp bad not been scratched was snfii ilent evidence to him thai Mr. Beitman was crooked , and ho would have to close up his store. The boy was ordered to put up the ihutters , which ho did. The gas was lit , and the stranger took possession of the tor ? , telling the proprietor that hi would have to place hladcputlea in ohatg > f the stock until he had had an exam * nation before the United States com missionor. Mr. Boltman consented to everything until ho was told that he would have to give up the key to the safe. He protested , saying that ho had nothing but private property in it , and that the government had NO KIQHT TO TAKE CHARGE OF IT. 'That makes nq dliToroncd , " the stran ger replied. "My name Is George Hart- man. I am a special agent of the govern ment , and have special orders to Investi gate you , solza your stock and anything else I found in your store and hold them mtil euch tlmo us you can have an exam ination. If yon do not do as I tell yon I will be obliged to place you under arrest , but if you behave younelf yon have noth- ng to fear and have a great deal to gain. Everything yon have in that safe mast be turned over to me. " Being so admonished , Mr. Beitman opened the door uf the eafo and told Mr Hartman to take possession of it. Hartman - man , or whatever his name in , ope nod the cash bux and took out the money , counting out 32,204. Ho then placed it back , and told Mr. Boltman that ho would bo obliged toplacohlm temporarily under AIUIEST , AND MAKE HIJI GIVE BONDS , Ono of the dopntlen was ordered to go with Mr. Beitman to some place where ho could get some responsible man to go on his bond , and the two left the store together. They had gone more than a block before the deputy told Mr. Beit man he was satltfiod ho was all right , so ho would not bother him to hunt up any security , so the two went back to the store , When they arrived there Mr. Hartman - man said he would take Ilia responsibil ity on himself , to allow Mr. Beitman to keep his store open , and would summon him , whenever the commissioner called hU oace , As a necessary precaution , however , he would have to retain the key to the safe , but before leaving he would leal the lock so the proprietor oould tell if it had been tampered with. A LONO STICK OF HEALING WAX was produced and the safe sealed , The three then left the place and Mr. Beit man throw open the factory again and resumed work. Yesterday ho began to think what had transpired might not be altogether straight , and so went to police headquarters to inquire what was the best for him to do under tbo circum stance i. Detectives Howes and Watrouu were sent to the shop where they exam ined everything tbat hsd been done and pronounced in to many words that the whole translation was a scheme. ' But tbo money is in my safe , " eald Mr. Beitman. "They can steal nothing fro a me. " BEOAC8K HE WAS 80 POSITIVE the detectives were induced to send for i lockiinith , and when ho came , after Mr , Boltmin'a ocnient had been gained , the leek was forced and the sifo was found to bo empty. Naturally Mr. Beitman ws wild over ( ho loss , and somewhat wilder over having been duped by n clever trick. He was able to give a good do- tcriptloni of the loading rogue and a fir ono of his accomplices. Ho offered a reward of $500 for the re covery of hts property , and instructed the dotcotlvos to spate no oxpento in their endeavors to arrest the scoundrels. List night two men who answered the description of the men were atrcalod and placed in jail. Mr. Beitman was sent for , but ho filled to identify them and they were released.
