Xlio Bloody Canyon.
A correspondent of the San Francisco
Chronicle who haa boon exploring the
.Sierras in the vicinity of the Yoaomlto
thus doscrlbos the " "
"bloody canyon" which
lien about forty miles from tbo valley ,
Toward evening wo nonred the head of
the bloody canyon at what is known as
the Mono pass. Never before had wo
gazed on Buch aaceno of barrenness and
nttor desolation aa that which was now
open before us. Being so near night the
otFoct was doubly enhanced. To the
Treat the sun was yet an hour high and
was tinging hero and there the enow-cor-
ercd granite with bloodred spots , while
the shadow Intervals were of the color of
blued stool , but to the east and below us
it was to all Intents and purposes night.
An occasional sparkle at our feet , very
far below , denoted the presence of a lake ,
and the mnfllod roar and hiss alao told of
waterfalls , probably cascades In the out
lets of the various lakes which , from
description , wo know existed in this can
yon , but now could not BOO.
The canyon is the usual V-shaped gorge
of all the California canyons. But this
one Is a giant among pygmies. The
northern slope is at least 8,000 foot deep ,
and the southern one fully 7,000 foot In
depth. And wo find from sketches made
at the time that the angle of the alopes Is
as sharp an GO or 70 degrees , with many
perpendicular faces of 800 or 1,000 feot.
No ir , In this ovonlng light , the top of the
great cliffs was of a deep purple-red , with
black-purple shadows , the face to the
north was a series of great ridges , run
ning vertically In parallel lines to the
slant of the rock , and each ridge notched
ana broken up Into a series of saw-liko
Indentations. The shadows of the Slerr *
were projected below far ont on to the
broken plain , but ceased at the foot of a
volcanic-looking mountain on the edge of
Mono lake. The lake and the distance
were in a beautiful rosy light whore the
sun atrnok the ground beyond the shad
ows. The general effect was grand be
yond description.
