Stocks Opened strong and In early deal-
inga made an advance of J@l per cent over
the closing of yesterday. Early dispatches
from Chicago couBrmod the reports that the
railway fight between the different roads load
ing west from that point was assuming serious
proportions , and the bears wore successful In
turning the market after the first hour.
Throughout the remainder of the day It con
tinued decidedly weak for grangers and about
steady for soma other Issues , notably Gould
stock , until shortly before 3 o'clock. ' I he
market closed on a slight rally from the low
eat figures reached for many stocks , but at the
bottom for others ,
