Stocks The stock market opened strong
and oxcltod this morning on tlio European
war news. In the early dodlmgs there was n
rush by the shorts to cover. The first prices
were tjenorally from i to 1 per cent higher
than the closing quotations of last evening.
A further gain ot g@i per cent was made
during the first half hour. This was followed
by a slight reaction and some hesitation ,
Vandcrbllts and Pacific Mail showing the
greatest weakness , while grangers remained
strong. The only potent influence through'
out the day on the market wa the news that
waa received from Europe regarding the pros-
pecta of war , and as this news continued to
indicate the probabilities tbnt o declaration of
war was inevitable , prices rallied soon after
mid-day and continued strong , with active
trading in some of the loading stocks.
