The ( irrepressible Jim Slophonaon
was on deck early yesterday morning , and
full of fight as ever.
"How Is U you didn't get nominated
last nlghlt Didn't you have the back
ing of the Sixth irard ? " naked n BEE re
porter.
"Of conrto I had. I hid U solid. I
had eight delegate ! . The people in the
Sixth ward wanted mo In the council and
I carried the ward by over 100 majority ,
bat Jim Boyd nnd Jim Orolghton didn't '
want me , I don't belong to their ring.
They put up a job and beat mo with ono
of the ntnall bosses dowu In the U. P.
uhopa who don't know enough to pound
annd. Jim Orolghton says I talk too
much. I do talk a goad deal but U IB
the truth I am talking nnd that's what
they can't stomach. "
"What particular objection was there
to your nomination ? " asked the reporter.
"Haven't yon been a straight democrat ? "
"They haven't nny good grounds. I
have always been a working democrat ,
but Jim Boyd didn't want mo nominated
for fear It would got too much talk about
the riots and militia. They want to
make a scape-goat of mo , that's all. I
had no more to do with bringing the ml
lltia hero than you havo. The fact la ]
have been misused and misrepresented In
that matter. I have got a claim now
ngilnst the atato for $80 for livery hire
and hay for the governor and his whisky-
drlnklog staff , that was on droaa parade
in this town for two vrooks. "
"Didn't yon ask Boyd to send for the
troops ? "
"Not a bit of U. I was not consnltod.
I didn't know anything about the troops
till they got horo. "
"How did that trouble on the dump
originate ? "
"I will toll you the whole alory , " said
Stephenson , "I took a contrast from
the B. & H. to do the grading. I was to
commence work on the 20th day of Feb
ruary , and did so. I first employed
about seventy men , and paid them 81,25
a day , with an agreement on my part to
pay thorn $1.50 at the beginning of
March. On the last day of February the
men struck , being Inducedto do no by
men who tried to got the contract and
could not , and by other men who would
not work themselves ; professional agita
tors , you might call them. I was to pay
them $1.50 on the 1st , aa I have said ,
and when the strike occurred I readily
acceded to the demand for $1.50. Tno
men , led on by the agitators , Immediate
ly struck for $1.75. I would even have
paid that , but was compelled not to do so
by the terms of my contract with the
road which said not moro than $1 50 per
day. "
"In conclusion I will say , " remarked
Mr. Stephenson , "that I have always
had the best Interests of Omaha at heart
and my four years' record in the council
will , I think , show this to bo n fact. I
wanted the nomination , and I worked
for it. I have many friends In the Sixth'
ward and the city at large , and I would
have boon elected without trouble. I
am moro entitled to tho' place than any
of those blncd-suckors who have nothing
at stake or nothing to lose men who
want office to rob the city. It seems tome
mo that the Union Pacific ought to have
been satisfied with two of the six nomi
nations for city council last night , but it
seems not. They have throe O'Malloy ,
Daily and Lowrey.
"You may tell the people that I am
going to run Independent , and It is my
Intention to bo elected , too , " said Mr.
Stephenson , and his face assumed a stern
look , as If ho had already proparedf or
the battle.

THE OAKNIVAL OF DECEIT ,
All-Fools J ) y" Origin
of tbo Custom.
This , the first of the now month
Is All Fools' day , popularJy known In this
country as April Fool's day. It that ono
of all the three hundred and sixty-five
when Truth blushing ; at tha grosi follies
of the occasion , draws her inantlo nbont
her and silently steals away ; when
Brazen Falsehood , , clothed in the musty
and time-worn garment ! o2 custom and
conventionality , stalks abroad in tha land ,
hand in hand with his brother , the Prac
tical Joke ; whoa young , , end old , and
middle-aged out to the winds all sensa of
truth and set themselves totho tooth'
some task of deceiving the unwary ;
when the Little Green Apple and the
Fat Purse , with R ten-foot string
connecting at the other end
with a wicked small boy whereof the
name is Vexation-and-Decelt , are sent
on their guileful minawn ; yea , verily ,
when the wire that doih trip and the
water-can that dplh spiil on the head of
the pedestrian , infest the piths of the
hoodlose ; and when the good old man ,
with the benevolent face and hoary head ,
may bo seen tolling through the street ,
bearing on his back tbo llbolona label of
the unholy urchin "Shoot Mo , I'm a
Dude" all this , yea more , makes up the
d y of "April Fools. "
The origin of the day , like that of
other anniversaries which have for cen
turies past been celebrated , Is clouded in
what appears to bo the most Impenetra
ble of mysteries. Certain it Is that All-
Fools' day has long furnished a date for
the Carnival of Deceit. Not
only 1s It observed on the
continent , In France , Germany ,
Italy aa In England , Scotland and Ire
land but In other and faraway olinaos
not blescod with tbo term of civilized , ie
there the eamo cnitom of foolery , Betas
persons of a curious and speculative bent
have endeavored to loosto and define * the
tigln of the anniversary ; that they have
not sufcoeded.U attested by the fact thai
we are yet In the dirk. Ono theory , per
haps the strongest , accounts for the aunl
vorttry un the ground that It came Iron
Christ's belcg sent , on frultlcia ralision
0 to and fro between Herod , Pilate anc
Gaisphai. Another remarkable op'nloi
f Is that it Is derived from Noah's sendln ]
his dove forth from the ark 01
tbo bootlcsi errond of dlscsver
it ing land. And still anothe
traces tbo CUB km back to the Festival o
the Hull , annually celebrated by th
t | faithful of the Hindoo * on the Slit c
March , when all manner of deceptlv
pleasantries are practiced , But whatever
the origin of the custom , U la pretty
much the uuno In observance all the
world over. In Scotland the dupe of
the April joke la said to bo "hunting a
gawk" looking for n cuckoo. In Franca
again , the unfortunate Is a "polsson d1
Avrll , " meaning a silly fish , like n mack
erel , easily caught.
It Is to bo expoo ted that the custom
will moot with the most hearty and com
plete local observance i > t least It won't
bo strange if such is the case , tor the
perms small boy yet grows and thrives In
Omaha ,
Smoke Seal of Notth Carolina To

THE WESTERN LEAGUE ,
Omnlia's Entrance Into the Organ
Izntion Now Assured.
It has at length been definitely settled
that Omaha is to have representation In
the Western Loagno , Mr. Fred
Hey , of Kansas City , who ia ono of
the prime movers of the league , arrived
here , Monday , and ia company with
number ot local enthusiast ] visited the
gentleman whoso claim upon the park
requires lifting , and securing concessions
from him , aeon succeeded In striking a
bargain. Assured by responsible citfcans
that the amount necessary to payoff nil
Hens and to place the park In repair would
soon bo raised , Mr. Hey loft
Monday night for Kansas City where to
day the schedule will bo made up. The
clubs now composing the league are
Toledo , Springfield , Cleveland , Indian
apolis , Kansas City , Omaha , Milwaukee ,
Minneapolis , St. Paul having with
drawn. The schedule will bo so ar
ranged as to afford a convenient circuit of
names , the western'clnba plating a series
first , then the eastern and then back and
forth. The season will bo opened In
Omaha on April 18 , with Minneapolis
pitted against the homo club.
Mr. Hey will personally manage
and supervise the movements of the
Omaha nine. Ho has already
boon negotiating for [ a number of
very fine players , with whom he antici
pates a apoady closure of contracts , .
Among them are the Say brothers of
last year's Baltimore Unions , Sylvester
and Schwartz of the Cincinnati Unions ,
L'ickorson D the Baltimore Association
club of hist year , with Visner , and pos
sibly others of the old Union Pacific
team , The club will no doubt bo a strong
ono , and will make a sharp race for the
championship.
The location of the park Is deemed by
some too far from the center
to be conveniently accessible. The
Green line , however , will convoy pasaon-
gcrs to within a few rods of the pirk
gates , and doubtless extra provisions will
be made by the company to acoomodato
all who desire to go out.
The park grounds are to bo rolled , the
fences repaired and a number of reiervod
scats and 25 cent seats will bo added.
Everything will bo In readiness by the
18th day of April.
A "CON ; " MAN.
How City Treasurer Bncfc was the
Victim of Mistaken Identity.
There is a pretty good story being told
on the democratic candidate for city
treasurer which is rather too rich to
keep. Unless the subject of the tale
becomes willing to make notarial deposi
tion on the- point , the truth or falsity of
th e tale will never become apparent.
It seems that one day last week Mr.
Buck got off the Ninth street car on
Jackaon street and walked up to Tenth.
While on the way , he was accosted by a
man , rather green and rustic looking ,
person who said : "See here , sir , what are
yon going to do about that
money I gave you for your baggage. "
"What do you moan ? " replied
Mr. B. , "You haven't given me any
money ai all. " "Yes I did , " said the
rustic , who bad evidently fallen a prey to
some confidence man. "Yes I did ; You
said you had some baggage that you
wanted TO- got out of the depot and I
loaned yon all the money I had to pay
the amount. " Of course , Mr. B. instated
that ho was not the man , the greenhorn
saying all the time , "Well , you look just
like the man , anyway. Your beard is
exactly tbo same. "
Paailng up Tenth street Mr. Buck no
ticed Councilman Thrano'standlng on the
corner and pointing htm out to the deluded
persecutor , he eald , "Go anil ask that
man who I am. Perhaps ho will toll yon
that Lam not a confidence man. " The
rustic did as bo was bid and was jocosely
informed by Mr. Thiano "that that tall
person was an. old ihoomakor from Flor
ence. " Whila this hardly put Mr. Buck
in scch. a position in his persecutor's
mind as would have the Information
that ho was the city treasurer of Omaha , ,
It served to clear him from all suspicion ,
Slowly and sadly the twica deluded man
moved off and joined the over growing
caravan of confidence victims whoso
treasures have boon hopoleaaly lost.
Mz. Buck is , nevertheless , a confidence
man ho has the confidence of every
voter in the ciiy. Selah !

Dropped tlio Brass ,
For some time there has been a sys
tematic thieving of the freight cars at the
Northwestern depot. Grata , coal , coke
and almost every conceivable article of
merchandise , have been stolen , In the
most mysterlona manner. Among th o
losers by those depredations has been
the Stoiz & Her brewery , the firm having
loat no small amount of grain. Thera
wai apparently no clno to the thieves
until Monday , when Franz
Bachmann , foreman of the brewery , dis
covered that one of. the freight caw at
this depot had been broken Into and a
largo quantity of barley extracted , A
trail of the grain was dieoaverod leading
from tbo car to the barn of Abner Travis ,
on fifteenth strestjbotwoen Webster and
Hurt. It la believed thai the center of
the thievery has at length teen discov

aworn out and placed for servlco In the

A LlUliS FIDMU.
Yesterday Officer Brady , In walking
down Douglas street , saw a boy walking
rapidly away with a heavy roll of brass ,
evidently stolen , under his arm. He

boy dropped the 75 pound roll of sheet
brass on Brady's tooi. The latter very ,
naturally threw up his. hands and bawled
