Kurekii ( Nov. ) Sentinel- " 1 was never moro surprised In my lifo ; han I wai sotno three weeks , " said Joe Donovan , a sheep herder of Ruby Yalloy , , n Kendo's saloon yesterday afteinoon. "I had driven my band of sheep along kho sldo of a range of low mountains bor dering the iroatorn part of the valley , in ordor.to keep them edt of the deopsnow in the lowlands , and when I got near a cer tain guj'-h which I did not ronu'inbor over having noticed before , I saw one of the most hideous objects of humanity It has over been my lot to eeo. It proved to bean an old woman with overalls and a man's co t and hat on. Underneath the coU was what liad boon a skirt , but nearly all of it had boon torn oil' by the sagebrush and greaeewood. The hair on the back of her bead was tied up , I noticed after ward , with a ploco of baling rope , while that on the fore part of her head fell loosely about her face. The way I hap pened to spy hot wai by tome of the ihoop which lad the band darting to ono eldo suddenly and running as though they had seen a wild beast. Not knowing what it oould bo , I spurred up my bion oho , and with a tit shooter , In hani ? , approached preached the frightful object. I don't know which of us wai the rnoit startled , but I aotutlly thought itwas the devil. She is at least CO yoard of age , and * ibe looked lilio a veritable witch. I finally spoke to her and asked her who she was. Abont the only reply nho made was a sort of pipiig [ ) sound. I then asked her whore she lived , and she pointed up the ravine. I WAI determined to find out more about her , and she finally offered to show mo ber habitation. Bat the would every now atid then ask for silt. Not withstanding I would tell her I had none , shu would repeat the request. She ap peared almost crr/y for tome , Finally I saw where she lived. It wai a tauncl soma-10 foot long and in tt oihtod half a dozen goat , a few chickens and ft broken down sheep or two. Wh t she llvod on. God only knows , lor I conld not too anything - thing eatable , except a few dtisd-up pota toes and what looked to bo n pleco of dried gcat. At first the woman talked with considerable difficulty , but finally I learned that the former owner of the Ltunnel had boon her htuband , and that ho had bean dead for five years. The old woman had llvod with him while ho had run his tunnel , which had probably been a good protpoct , and when death came to him she buried him on the hlllsldo near by , and ho , doubtless was the last white man she had talked to. She said that the Indians hrd boon gocd to her , and would sometimes shoot a rabbit , a eago- hen or a coyote for her. I tried t3 got her full name , but all she would tell molt was Hondo ! H , She said , too , that aho and her husband had come from Ut.h dearly twelve years ago. The next day I gave the old dame what provisions I : ould spare , and told her I would proba bly do moro for her. I told her I would report her to the authorities , bat the mumbled and intimated that she would never leave the tunnel. "Whether she re gards it as a valuable piece of mining property or whether she Is Insane on the lita she is leading , I ctn't Bay. After the inau guration of Claveland a temporary retire ment to Fortress Monroe will bo made by Chester A , Arthur. This will bo done for the benefit of his health , which la debilitated by dyspspsla , duo to menial anxiety. This assertion is made on the word of Police Connn'silomr French , who has just returned from a visit to Washington , where his daughter has been spending a month with too presi dent's family. "At no time in the four years which he has almost served , " says Mr. French , "has has been so annoyed and badgered by oflico-seekors from every pact of the union as within the last month. They fmpor- litnedhim In droves dally to glvo jobs to them before bis sticcetsor came into pow er. This constant onslaught , at times of the most Influential character imaginable , liis tiled him out , broken him do * m coin- plotelv , and put him in such a condition that absolnta rest is essential , lie will stay at Fortress Monroe until ho feels aomowhat restored , and then will proba bly go on a long cruise soath in a sailing yacht. If at any tlmo ho has regained his old-fashioned vigor ho will rc- anrno the practice of law. Ho will , not , however , resume his former place in partnership with Ivnevals & Ransom , but will work by himself. Boond this conclusion , ho hnsmado no positive platia for the future. His physicians and Intimate - timato friends have advised him to live quietly for at least six months , and es pecially to avoid excitement or annoyance of any kind. He has saved but little from his salary as president , and I don't believe he baa more than $75,000 to his name to-diy. " Mr. French's social and political intimacy with Mr. Arthur makes this statement credible above all the different reports that have gone out as to his intentions. PILES ! FlJuESt PILKS ! The vexed question of Mnry Andor- son'o ago scorns to have been definitely Bottled. In tbo office of the clerk of the circuit court at Loalivlllu a reporter of the Courier-Journal was recently shown the official record in the case of the adoption of Mary Anderson or her stepfather - father , Dr. Hamilton Griflin , who in the character of her agent lus unconsciously Famished much amusement to two con tinents. The papera are dated December , 13 , 1875 , and described the "Infant1 to bo adopted as 1C yoarj of uge. They aho prudently provide that she shall bo tbo heir-at-law of the sa'd ' Hamilton Griflin. The explanation of the proceeding la that Miss Anderson was at tbo tlmo preparing to go on the ttjge. and Dr. Griffin hid expended all his meana , and oven mart- gaged what little property he had , in or der to provide her with a wardrobe. Her mother was not in good health , and im agined that iho was about to die. In that case her brother , a Cathoho priest , who was much opposed to the daughter's going on the stage , would have become ber guardian. Invitations to the ceremony were scattered broadcast through the Bowery and adjacent thor oughfares , and oaoh of the several hun dred wedding guests deposited a dime with the cashier as a guarantee of good faith when ho entered the museum. The r aion for the unusual interest manifested in these nuptials lay In tbo fict that both the t > rile and groom are remarkable people. The lady la not un known to fame , having starred with P. T. The delicate taste of the couple led them to decide that the wedding cere mony should take place upon the slag * of the museum , and there it was consequently quontly performed at ! o'clock yesterday afternoon. All of the cast siilo popula tion that conld gat into the auditorium was present. At the appointed tlmo the tall form of the giant was aeon towering aloft and bearing down npon the stage , the blushing bride clinging coyly to his arm. The reason they entered from the front of the house was that the gir h of the bride prevented her ingress by the stage door. A stout pair of stepi was produced , and the lady was hauled and shoved over the foot lights. followed by the giant and the Rev. Mr. Mootchouse. A moment later a floral towel rack was handed up and added a now beauty to the scene. The fatal moment arrived , and the couple stood eido by side before the minister , the expression of the groom's countj- nanco giving rise to the inference that ho was standing upon a carpet tack , though it was explained afterward that the an guish depicted upon bii features wai duo to his appreciation of the gravity of his sltuatnn.
