Siln from tlio Sea.
Tlio son yields many precious tilings
coral , amber timl pearls but it is not
generally known that in some parts oi
the Meililcrrauoan a species of mussel
is found ofwhich tlio iibolls coutaic
one of tbo most beautiful textile mate
rials known. These shells are about
seven inches long and three inches
broad , and encli of them contains a hanker
or byssus of the fiber , weighing hall a
drachm , and at first it presents noth
ing particular to the eye , being soiled
with mud and the remains of marine
plants. But , when washed and combed
the libers are Been to bo extremely
lustrous , glistening in the sunshine in
flhadee. varying from a golden yellow to
olive brovn. Spun and wovoii in the
ordinary manner , stockings , gloves ,
neckties and similar articles can be
manufactured from them , and they are
hkowiso suited for making the finest
lace. At present the production of
these fibers hardly exceeds 200 kilo-
jrummcs (3 ( ewt. ! J qrs. ) a year. Spcci-
ip'jiiR of these curious roiisuels and their
finished products were exhibited at fho
great Paris Exhibition , but they Ap
pear to have been overlooked.
Klotz , the lumber man of Shatti , Gal. ,
has a big slab pile which ho hta boon ac-
cumulat ng for years , which is to bo tired
on the night of the fid of March , in honor
of the inauguration of President Clave
land. Bethinks tlio blaze will bo aoen
100 miles away.
