As a kcon-looldngbusiness man , witi
his bat worn on the iiapo of his neck ,
was standing on Clark street , Chicago ,
a simple , gawky-looking country lad ol
19 , with a big envelope in his hanJ , and
his mouth nnd eyes wide open , came
sannteriuK along , looking anxiously nl
all the signs , which ho waa apparentlj
spelling out. The business man beinf
naturally kind-hearted , and desiring t
do a friend turn to a stranger , said tc
the boy :
"Hi , sonny , what are you looking
for ? Lot me see that letter. "
"Now , I can't let you have that let
ler ; there's bonds in it , " said the boy
" ' tell where Mr
"but p'haps you can mo
Smith lives around hero. The bosi
told mo the number , bnt I've forgottei
it , and the letter has got bonds in it
nnd BO I ain't to give it to anybody bu
him. "
"Why , I've boon waiting for you thii
half hour , " saitf the keen business man
as his face brightened up ; " waiting fo
you to bring mo those bonds which !
bqught of What's-his-name. "
"Be you Mr. Smith ? " said the boy
" well , now , I'm glad I met you , becausi
I'd clean forgot what was the imml
where the boss said yon lived , and . '
wouldn't liked to go back without find
ing you ; it would have looked as if . '
was careless. "
With these remarks the lad took ou
a big envelope marked " J. Smith , Esq. .
present , " in the upper corner " $2,0Ji (
U. S. C-20s , " and in the lower cornel
" Commission due , $5. Please remit b ;

That's all right , sonny , " said th <
keen-looking businessman , as hohnulei
out a scantily-furnished purse , give th <
boy a $5 bill and a quarter , and said
" There , sonny , that quarter is to rowan
you for your cleverness and fidelity ,
and , putting the envelope in his breas
pocket , ho walked leisurely round th
corner , ran to Dearborn street with th
speed of a deer , skipped lightly roun <
to Madison , and , hailing a car , wn
whirled away at a comparatively light
ning speed. Not till ho had reachei
Union Park did ho draw the preoiou
envelope from his pocket , nnJ , with th
remark , "Pray heaven they are no
registered I" tore it open. Ho thei
found that the envelope contained ;

have purchased at the office for 5 cents
Meanwhile the simple country lad , en
toriug a beer saloon in the vicinity o
the Sherman House , absorbed
beer , salted away the $5 bill with sevoi
others in his pocket-book , and , with th
rsrssrk , "Tho fish ia biting very numei

sallied forth in search oi a keen-look

Youth.
There is nothing like youth. Thi
