TUE LICENSE QUESTION.
The wholotnlo liquor doUtrj cf Omaha
and Nebraska are standing in their own
1'ght by restating the plain letter of the
law , vhich quirc over/ vendor cf
liquor to take out a license. Judge Me-
Culloch'a recent decision plicts the
wholesale doalora at a dlta'H'jmlago in
the matter of collection * , because they
hnvo not complied with tha requirements
of the law , and therefore are aclling
without any authority. Now it strikes
us that tha proper remedy Is in amending
the present law and making it clearer
and broader. Lot the legislature fix the
maximum wholesale liquor license and
give each dealer authority to tell in any
county in the atato during the period
covered by the license. This will also
compel the drumnurj of foreign
liquor honaos , who como to No

without license may bo indicted and
fined , but the tax which ho ou ht to have
paid cannot bo collected. There should
bo a provision in the law tlat ovary
person who sells liquor without a li
cense shall upon conviction bo made t :
pay § 150 for every month or fraction of a
month ! thereof for which ho has been tell
ing contrary to hw. That would bring
hose ; patties to time who are defiant
ind prefer to pay lawyers to light the law
ather than to comply with it. Such a
trov.sion would wipe out the saloons
Yithin the two m lo bolt because they
loulcl not afford to pay § 150 a month , and
ho keepers would cither move within the
ity limits and take a § 1,000 license , ere
o beyond the two milo limit and take
nit a county license for § 500.
The school fund in Omaha has lost over
10,000 ! since the passage of the Slocumb
aw simply because it has not been prop-
irly interpreted and enforcedand because
rn ! undue and improper influence lias been
ixcrciscd upon courts , juries , and city
iouneil. So far as the amount of the
vholesale license is conceined if it is too
ligh at § 1,000 , let it bo lowered to § 750 or
500 , but let something bo done to make
ho wholesalers bear their poition of the
iiirden. ; However , if the law rciminsas
is there is no doubt tliat the supreme A
lourt will eventually compel the wholc- ac
alers to pay § 1.000 license as required by le
ts provisions. st
