Stocks moro active than any pro\Ious day
for the week. There wore a few slight reac
tions and there was n temporary decline of IJc
in Northern Pacific preferred , but the poncral
course of prices VIM upward and an advance of
jc to 3jc | established. Anthracite coal stocks
were the most prominent features and scored
the groato t improvement. The recommen
dation of Ilia 3 per cent sixty year funding
scheme for the Pacific roads by the senate ju
diciary committee , the icstoration of cast-
bound freight rates at Chicago and other west
ern points * and the reduction in the Bank of
England discount , all tended to stimulate an
upward movement which wts a'so iiitisted by
free purchases to cover short contracts. '
