KING COTTON , Some of His Loyal Followers Suffer Greatly. Many Thousand Dollars Lost by Iowa OitizenSi Hurst of a Bubble , The mania for speculating and the do- tire to make rishos qnlckly , canoed It to 1)3 comparatively easy to induce a goodly number of citizens of Council Bluffs and of adjoining places to invest money in a grand cotton speculating schema. . Now the bubble la buratod there are a nnm- bor of wiser heads and sadder hearts. The plan was In brief as follows : Ewon itOo , , of Now York , were represented as old and experienced brokers , who had special familiarity with King Cotton and his peculiar ups und downs , and who so intimate in his star-chamber proceedings that they could not fail to get rich by basking under his smiles. They proposed not onlyto | make fortunes for themselves but also lor others , and the philantrophlo offer was made tint anyone desiring to invest from § 300 upwards , could go into the pool , and Imvo a proportionate share in the proGU , which were figured as immense , when the capi tal was thus handled by shrewd and ex perienced speculators. Some well-known citizens , not only invested some of their own money , but solicited investments from others. Ono shrewd broker wan urged to go In , but ho raised the perti nent question , why it was necessary to como fifteen hundred miles west to got § 300 from some man of small moans , while there were millions of dollars near at hand , right in Now York city , the holders of which would ghdly Invest Iu any reasonably safe enterprise promising so rich returns ? Wore the Now York capitalists all fools orroro they not satisfied that the scheme would work ? Such a line of inquiry caused them to drop tno broker. Others wore , however , loss suspicious , and the character and stDnding of men who had already invest ed caused them to invest also. These amounts varied from $300 no less than that rfrould ho received up Into the thousands. Almost every monlh a dividend was declared , and the stockholder given the option to take it In cash , or to lot it bo added to the principal , in which case still larger dividends will bo received. Ono case is cftod as Illustrating the workings. Ono lady in this city was in duced to invest § 1,000. She kept it in a year , and did not draw any dividends. At the close of the year she was called upon by a representative of the con- pany , who presented her a draft on Now York for $1,200 , as the earnings of her § 1,000. She was toid that if she wanted to draw out the original § 1,000 also , she could do so , and that a draft on the com pany for that amount wonld be en dorsed by him and she could get it cashed at , the bank here. Of course she was not anxlons to draw out the § 1,000 which was earning her § 1,200 a yoar.and listened willingly to another proposition. If she would lot the § 1,000 remain in , and put this § 1,000 with It , making § 2- 200 , and then add to this some § 000 spare money which she had , she would then have in the pool § 2,800 , which dnr Ing the next year wonld doubtless make not less than § 0,000 , With the § 1,200 draft at her hand , and with such glowing pictures of the future , it naturally took less to induce her to Invest n second time than it did the first , and the § 2,800 went in. Some have drawn out iu nholo or in part , but the largo majority have kept in the greater part of their investments. It is estimated that in Council Bluffs and in the surrounding country there has boon not less than § 150,000 thus Invested in this cotton speculation. Ono attorney In this city is said to have invested § 25,000 , but to have drawn out a few hundred dollars more than that. Another well-known citizen is said to have invested § 5,000 , but acting as agent for the company has boon allowed com mission which , together with his share in the profits , has enabled him to draw out several hundred dollars a month , un til ho has drawn out about as much as he put In , but it having boon drawn out In smaller sums , and being looked on as earnings and spent as such , ho has little to show for it. Another of Council Bluffs' shrewdest attorneys has § 500 good money invested , besides an undrawn but declared dividend. Saoh was the condition of affaiis when the news came that Ewon & Co. had made an assignment. Some parties hur ried oast- , and since tholr return the others have boon trying to get some par ticulars from them , but thus far the ro. turned investigators either 'failed ' in thoii mission or are very reticent. About all that is learned is the statement that if t speculation now on hand turns out at favorable as it now promises to , the stockholders will get back nearly , if nol all their original investment , without the great dividends wjilch have boon crod up to them on the books. If they gel out whole some of them at least will feel that they have done well , but it will bo i long time before any new specnlatini of will tempt them to invest , unless it ii robe nearer homo , where they know just who bo is doing.
