Old Rosy would make a good socrotaiy , but the probabili ty is that ho will not bo made secretary. AMONG tbo recent callers at Grover Cleveland's headquarters wo notice the name of George W. Miller. This Is prob ably intended for Dr. Miller , of Omaha. Tuny do cny that J. Sterling Morton chafes under the epithet of "postoffico peddler , " which Dr. Miller hao applied to him , like a fretful stood under a gallIng - w r , Ing saddle. I r the world cornea to an end on Bun- day next , in accordance with the predic tion of the Advontisto , it will bo a severe voro blow to the democracy after their atrugglo of twonty-four years to catch on to glory and plunder. THOSE sluggers and thotr frlonds who if nro talking about getting up another priza fight in this atato have evidently forgotten that ouo of their number , Han ley , is.now nerving a term in the Nebraa ka penitentiary for priza-fightiug. Tun St. Paul Day hai mot Its Water loo. After a brief but brilliant career 1 ban coaaccl to exist. It was a losing on torpriao from the atart , and Stanley Wa terloo waa finally cojripolled to aoknowl edsr.0 that a fortune ia not made in a Day. . IT Is slid that the atholotio trainer a Harvard college ia to receive 510,000 a year. It is a hard thing to nay abou that brainy institution , but wo canno help saying that this will lead some per sons to believe that Harvard has mor money than brains. INDIANA has astonished the world. 1 Is announced that her $2,000,000 stat liouso Is soon to bo cstnpleted.for § 130,000 less than the appropriation. The only way this can bo accounted for is that the republicans have managed the afMra of that state during the construction of the capltol building. SGUUYLKH Cuosnv , ox-governor of Montana , and now assistant postmaster general , insists that all the subordinates who visit his room shall address him as 'governor , " and no attempted to have his uamo put on the post-offices directory aa "Gov. Schuylor Crosby , first assistant postmaster-general , " but thia request was refused. His airs have created a great deal of amusement , and he has oa- tabliehed for himself the reputation of a anob. How such a man over survived a term in the gubernatorial chair of such r. territory as Montana IB what puzzles the average mind. SAM RANDAii.8 southern tour may have for its object the spread of his tariff ideas , but DO far it looks as if the main purpose of hl swinging round the southern circle was for his own entertain ment and to lay the foundation for his candidacy for the presidency in 1888. Ho is certainly being very cordially re ceived , and is teipg treated to refresh ments in n very liberal manner. There is ono thing auro that the hotpitablo Bonthorners do not propose to lot Sam go hungry. It ia barely possible , however , that Sam Rindall htrai another object in vlofr , and that is to convince Cleveland that the south would hail with 'delight ' his appointment to a cabinet position. Tut : city council sometime ego passed a building ordinance , which provided nmoncc other things that building per mits should bo issued and a building rec ord kept. That ordinance , however , has not been enforced in any particular , Why this and other important ordi nances are not enforced is something wo cannot quite understand. It la certainly a waste of time and money to lumber up the records with ordinances that arc passed simply to become n dead letter. The no'n-cnforcemont of the building ordinance has compelled us to ex pend nt least $150 to secure information regarding the number of now buildings Greeted during the year 1881 , which in formation wo could have obtained for nothing and in a very short time had the ordinance been complied with. Jn other allies a complete building record ia kept by the city clerk , who issues a permit foi every building erected. * This is whal Should bo done in Omaha , nnd wo shall insist thattho building ordinance , which ptovldoa for nuch record , bo enforced daring this year. INTERESTING STATISTICS OF 1884. The compilers of statistics have been busily engaged for a month past in gath ering all sorts of facts and figures of the year 1881 , and they have presented the public with many interesting tables. During the past year the whole number of casualties suina up 96,351 , aa against 118,410 in 188JJ , 2,085 in 1882 , and 11- 273 in 1831. The onliro fire losses in the Unite Statea and Canada for 1884 wlliroach _ nbout 8135,000,000. COMBAT DEEPI2NS. T ho factional feud between the leaders of the Nebraska democracy ia bccomin qnito interesting. Aa a strictly impaftiEl and independent observer the BEE has endeavored to keep its patrons fully in formed as to the condition of the com batants. Wo have already published Dr. * Miller's version of the late star-chamber encounter. And now comes J. Sterling Morton through the Nebraska City News , with the following rejoinder , which is charactcristerio of the sago of Arbor Lodge : The telegram of Mr. Boyd to M. L. George , which waa published in the Sat urday Chicago NOWP , toll part of the truth. It omits the important fact that on the motion of Mr. Charles Loach , of Johnson county , the motion tabling reso lutions was reconsidered by a vote of 18 to 8 ; it having been passed under a mis apprehension of Its ecopo nnd design. Then Mr. Clegg , of Richardson county , offered a substitute referring all federal appointments "in which the whole state" ia interested to W. L. May , Esq , secre tary of the state democratic com- mittoa nt Fremont , and instructing Mr. May tq submit all papers pertaining to said federal appointments to the state deiuocmtio connnitteo at its adjoti > ncd "convocation" in Omaha on the thud Thu.sday in Match at ) 7 p.'ni. , at Faxton house , llius the committee , by having 135 niembots present out of n total of 41 , endorsed the "convoking" of Chairman Morton , and then ic-endoised it by ml- joui.ning to a day cottain to conclude its delibo. ntions. 'I hus , also , the state dcm- ociatie connnitteo dccln cd the power , the authority of the democratic p.vty or ganization toadviso and ditect in the distribution of federal favors , Thus , furthermoretho atate committee asserted itself against bosslsm and syndicates in the distribution of appointments by adopting Mr. OloRg'fl ' resolution by a vote of twenty odd to two. Mr. Boyd , being posted , ebonld correct his hasty and somewhat unfinished telegram so us to convoy all the truth. Now the fur will fly. Mr. Boyd is not a man who will allow anybody to step on his coat-tail without promptly retaliat ing. As member of the national com mlttoo ho holds the little joker in the political Rbtno of "draw. " AcconuiNO to the statistics compiled by the Now York Telegram , there has been about nine murders a day in the United Stales during the year just clos ing , while executions of murderers have averaged barely two a week. Only about ono murder In every thirty-three has boon punished by duath. It is such statistics as these which mates it poesi- ilblo to comprehend the continued ex istence and strength of the democratic party. [ Cleveland leader. It Is such stupid rant from the noncombatant - combatant swashbucklers that has kept the democratic party alive | for twenty years after the war , and made it possible for it to elect a president. The Bnrchords of the republican press are cbUily responsible for the disaster which has overtaken the republican party. Without them it could have remained iq power for twenty years Icmger. Tt M B KNDIUCKS , who is very anxious to deal out federal patronage in a way that it will do himself and the democratic party the most good , when asked what ho thought of Cleveland' * civil service letter kid , after some little hesitation , that ho had not examined it carefully enough to dUcuw thoeentlmentsit contained , but that ho vM very favorably Impressed with it. "Simply a y I like It , " said Mr. Hcndricks. The vice presldont-tlcot Is in about the tame position aa the eastern dude who stepped up to R Nevada bar and called for a mint julep. "Whall A mint julep ! " exclaimed the bartender ; "You'll ' tabo whisky or nothing. " Mr. Hcndricks can't got any mint julep in is ; ho'll have to take the medicine hlch Cleveland may see fit to give him. ALMOST every day there comes from ho east Boinu onconrcoghing repott aa to ia revival of operation Itio industrial ns- ablishtnouts that have been closed for omo time. Ono of the most cncourajing f theeo reports is that all the knitting ullls nc Oohoco , N. Y. , nlll resume work a January Ctb , nnd give employment to evoral thousand operator ? , and also that ivo hundred mon wjll bo ro-omployod londay by the Bessemer Stool works at Troy , N. Y. , which will run by day for ill indefinite period. Wo have also noticed Iso that other factories of various kinds n other cities have have resumed and , hat n slightly hotter fooling prevails ihroughout nonrly all the eastern nnnu 'actnring districts. Gnovnii CLEVELAND is still being made ho recipient of presents of every dcecrip ion from all parts of the country. Act- ng upon the principle that charity cov era a multitude of sins , ho has concluded , rather than stand the expense of return- ng them , to present to Albany charltica all pifta now on hand , as well as all thai arrive in fho future. It is to bo hoped 'or the sake of the Albany charities thn thia determination on the part of Cl vc- and will not chock the flow of presents. It might bo a good plan for Cleveland to turn over a portion of those gifts to dis appointed applicants for oflico. THE Now Year's call seems to have gone out of fashion in Omaha. Never in the iiistory of the city were there , so few calls made on Now Year's as there have beci to-day. Ono of the causes no doubt is the hard times , and another is the'disap pointment experienced by the ladies las year when the gentlemen failed to put ii an appearance as numerously as was ex peeled. The ladigH remembering the lad of interest manifested by their gentlemci friends in 1884 , concluded to got cvoi with them this year , and hence the smal number that kept open house. J. STEULINO MORTON keeps firing away at Dr. Miller through the Chicago Times as vrlil bo seen by the following para graphs which appeared in that paper on \Vodncaday : * Wby are so many editors visiting Mr Cleveland 1 Do they know that ho never reads their papers 1 Another editor has just visited Govcr nor Cleveland to toll him how to run an administration. Courtesy requires Mr Cleveland to now call upon these editors and tell them how to run a newspaper. JUST now the shoo pinches pretty ban in matters of taxation , but you can novo build a city without maklag somubod ; pay for it , For the time being It is a hardship , but the advance in property b ; reason of improvements that have placet Omaha in a commanding position is suffi ctent compensation in the end. The Iberal outlay that Omaha haa made for public improvemen's has made it the best city on the Missouri river. THE fact that ( hero has been an la crease of $10,000,000 in tho'savings bank deposits of Massachusetts is taken as ovi donee that the hard times have not press ed ao severely upon the working c oee as has boon gencral'y ' ouppo&od. A hotter tor measure of the prosperity of this clans however , is the increase in the smaller deposits , and in those below $300 it ha been only $515,000 , about ono-third o what ib was in 1883. Fou unadulterated chock a certain London pill mnnufacturcr i < \ entitled to the champion bolt. And now so trifling an incident a tlio discovery of Dr. Miller of the Omaha Herald , registered in a Chicago hotel un der an assumed name , bids fair to f ui into fury the flames of factional strife ii the Nebraska democracy. The clocto found himself obliged to explain his socre trip to the cast in a newspaper interview Now ho finds himself obliged to explaii the interview in a letter. In his letter o explanation to The Chicago News , whil still protesting that his mysterious cxpjoi is non-political , ho makes a savage on slatight on J. Sterling Morton and gee extensively into democratic pqliticfi ii Nebraska. Ho directly charges Mortoi with "jiostofllcli peddling" in Kubrouk and declares that by promises of post offices ho packed a majority of th state committuu. " Hu further accusu Moitnu of having "n morbid ambition t control in thuir affai'H beyond his legiti mate voice the Nelxaska dcmoo acy. lint the doctor hurls defiance in the tuut of Morton and his faction , and proclaim * that ho will not tun over the friends o Gov.
