signed John L. McCaguo , is repudiated by
that gentleman as a forgery. The publication
of the letter was through an oversight en our

Street Commissioner Meanoy Is as hard
nt work as ever , and is engaged on a very

Illinois and Michigan canal favorably

THE LUTHERAN FAIR.
Tlio Opening Day Successful In K\cry
Wednesday was the opening day of the
fair given by the Indies of the English
Lutheran church , corner of Sixteenth
and Harnoy streets. The opening was
significant of success and It was a happy
surprise to the ladies that the rush for
dinner completely cleaned out
the larder and when that meal wan over
the cupboard was as bare as the ono
wnich Old Mother Hubbard searched to

find ' a bono for her hungry dog. At supper
a largo crowd was fed and all got n good
meal.
That night the rooms were crowded by
old ' and young , bout on having a good
time and they had it. The church was
uicoly decorated with foatoons of evergreen -
green and a number of lings. The booths
were tastily and prettily arranged and did
a rushing business.
The commission department , where al
most anything that could bo found in
any store waa for sale , was presided over
by Mro. A. Tray nor , Mrs. T.Tuttlo , Mrs.
Elliott , Mrs. Brunor , and Mrs. W.
Lawrence. The confectionery depart
ment was in charge of Misses Annie
Traynor and Lizzlo Dills , who were busy
supplying sweats for the children.
In ono corner of the room was arranged
a buttermilk fountain , and it was under
the management of Mrs. Hal Jones ,
who was decorated in a
costume of yo olden times , and
had taken unto herself the name of
"Cynthia Bodkins. " The fancy goods
department was ono of the finest of the
lot , and was presided over by Mrs.
Swartzlander , Mrs. Korty , Mrs. Goo.
Lawrence , Mrs. Dickinson , Mrs. * B.
Smith , Mrs. Fisher , Mrs. J. J. Riley ,
Mrs. Payntor and Mrs. Wcssman.
The culinary department is probably
the ono in which the general public is
most intorostod. And to say that the
victuals were good docs not half express it.
This department Is under the immediate
supervision of Mrs. P. J. Nichols , who
is ably assisted by Mrs. Goodman , Mrs.
F. Drexel , Mrs. Honlff , Mrs. Jardino ,
Mrs. Roeder and Mrs. Zlramer. The
tables were waited upon by a bevy of
beautiful young ladles as follows : Misses
Dpllio Harpstor , Fanuio Scxauer , Lizzie
Dills. May Nichols , Minnie Riley , Grace
Hetlley. Blrt Lplsonrlng and Mrs. Margie
Hunt , while Mias Lizzie Leiscnrlng acted
in the capacity of cashier.
Among the amusements of the place
was the art gallery , which was a masterpiece -
piece in Its way , and no ono can ailbrd to
visit the bazir without visiting this foa-
turo. 16 is under the supervision of Will
Young , the prince of comedians , Chas.
H. Puts and Dr. Leisenlng. The fishing
Dond is another feature end did a thriv
ing business. The panorama was in
charge of John HullF , M. D. , and was
very fine.
Mrs. 0. B. Havens , Mrs. M&ttio Shull ,
Mrs. Maggie Shull and Miss Maggie
Rpedor comprise the commlttco on enter
tainment , and make it pleasant for all.
Each cvoning a pleasing programme of
vocal and instrumental music is givon.
Guy Barton and family have gone on a trip
eastward.
Hon. ( ! . M. Lambcrtson has returned to
the state capital.
G. H. Haarmann , one of our popular Ger-1
man citi/ous , is reported ery sick.
Judge W. M. Kobertson , of Madison , has
returned home fiom attendance on the U. S.
court.
Jimmy Henry , who was formerly in Iho em
ploy of Kiley & Dollone , and afterward went
Stromaburg , where he was in business for
saveral inonthn on his own account , has re
turned to Omaha , 'and is now with Cap.
Malloy. Ho is a good man and in a good
place.

genial face and accommodating ways are
familiar to every reporter , and everyone
rejoices at Mlko's good luck. May his
work in the now sphcro extend ever as
many decades as ho shall wish it to.
