Washington Capital.
Congressman Warner , of Tennessee , is
a line constitutional lawyer , and nho , oc
casionally , is n line alutuberer. last ses
sion it was hia custom , when weary , tn
put his foot upon his doak , swing himself
jack in his chair , nnd nod off into tlio
liappy land of dreams. Ono day trhilo
indulging in his favorite habit ho began
to snore.
Congressman Warner's snore is n fine ,
largo , nblo-bodiod snore. It is exquisite
in its resonant music , nnd it breaks elf in
its sweetest places Into n delicious snort.
It ptirauoa its sad avocation in n hum
drum sort of n wny when Mr. Warner is
ensconced in the privacy of his bod-room ,
but on this occasion the snore saw
that it was in distinguished company ,
ind it humped itself for the greatest ef
fort of Us life. It soared up to high C ,
nnd then It sank down to low G. It In
dulged in n profusion of very graceful
notes , nnd then it wailed like the lltito
that the aniatocr tickles in the stilly
liours of night. Pretty soon the snore
began t make itself felt , nlso hoard , nnd
the members forgot themtolvoj undnr the
witching influence of its melody. The
snore noticed this and redoubled its ef
forts , nnd , ns it increased in volume , it
caught the spenker's oar. Mr. Keifor
rapped with the gnvel nnd said :
"The gentleman from Tennessee la out
of order , nnd to bo rocognlzad ho must
offer hij resolution to adjourn while
standing. "
Congressman Dibrell , ono of Sir. War
ner's colleagues , taking in the situation ,
shook the snoring statesman nud said
"Dick , wluit in the world &ro you do
ing ? You have gotten the house in terrible -
riblo confusion , nnd Koifer thinks you
have made n motion to adjourn. "
"What ? " ejaculated Mr. Warner , rub
bing his oves. "Why , I wna only study
ing the constitution. "
And the snore tickled itself under its
ninth rib nnd wont of into n comatose
condition instantor.

> f F. Marion Crawford's last novel , pub-
( shod by Hcughton , Milllln & Co. , Boa-
; on , ami for aalo in Oninhn.by J. S. Caul-
field. Mr. Crawford has grown to bo n
very popular novelist , nnd those who
liavo heretofore moat admired his llightu
of fancy will perhaps bo equally surprised
uid pleased with the strong character of
the present work , which may bo said to
bo a picture drawn by common some from
passing political events. "A Roman
Singer , " vrhich wnathoimmodiatoprecur-

of improbabilities so charmingly told ns
to appear simple nnd natural. While
the present work is no loss graceful nnd
pleasing in style , It is nt the same tlmo
broader , showing deeper thought nnd
more painstaking labor. The ctiaractor
of Iho here is strongly drawn and the setting
ting well drown to show it lo advantage
and ndd artistic vnluo. The book cloeos
with nn nddross delivered by the hero ,
then senator , in the capilol , when the
choosing of n president has dovolod upon

sanism and urging non-partisan political
action.

America , " published by Fowler > V Wells ,
Now York and for sale in Omaha by J.
S Caulfiold , is ono of'tho most entertain
ing volumes that have boon placed upon
our table for n long time. The author of
this volume needs no introduction to the
American public , her work in behalf of
struggling women during thopaat twenty
years has boon attended with so much suc
cess that she has acquired wide-spread
celebrity in spite of herself. Her three
visits to this country were nmdo for the
purpose of studying our society , our In
dustrial methods and organizations in be
half of poor nnd unfortunate English
women , nnd the record of these throe
visits is not n rush into print to gratify
personal motives merely , or to lot the
world know "my impressions of Amerlcn , "
nfter the style of so many foreign
tourists , but the notes of a warm-hearted ,
practical observer who is in oaruoatfor the
improvement of the condition of her
fellow-women , nnd glvoa her beat exper
ience In the tracings of her pen. Few
writers on America have soon so much of
our country , talked with so many of our
best people , and looked BO deeply into
our social habits and institutions ; nnd ns
she relates the notable incidents of her
journey , in n lively , ngrooablo manner ,
the of oxhu-
-thawing everywhere woman -
liorant good nature , the render is capti
vated at the start. Ono finds himself
newly interested in things that hodoemod

Sketches of conversations occur
