PAINTING THE SKY , Tin * Dotiiocrnts Coli'ln-ato AVIiotlioi'Oi no nntl MnUo Nlfjin Hideous Hir Kopiililicnim , In aocordatico with the tlaming postora scaltorotl nbout Saturday announcltif ? that the democrats would in the evening "paint the sky , " there waa a general hur rah. Some of the moat prominent am lovol-hoidcd of the party thought auch a celebration was a little too premature and would have nothing to do with U but a tjoodly number decorated their liouscu and places of bucinoos. Uonfires wore ntartod up iu the ntrcots and for Bovoral hours there waa the firing of shot guns and revolvers , the sending up of rockote , thoglaroof red light * , the hoarse ahotita of tired throate , and the unearthly hooting of innumerable tin liorns. There wore crowds of people on the main streets , but there wna little to BCO , though much to hoar. There scorned no method or dofmito arrango- menta , but simply a general coufuaod yell and hurrah. A no-called procession iras formed , but it was like the real of , ho rejoicing decidedly informal. A 'ow hundred of a motley crowd of boys uid mon wont through the streets with aanda of music howling and hooting , and sooniod determined only on making as much nolso as possible. The only charitable contraction to bo placed on their actions waa that their enthusiasm swept away their judgment. There wore a few with torches , a few with Chinese lan terns great many with broomsa dozcnpr liorsoback , a good many armed with tin liorna , a few men , a great many boya and a few foolish fellowa costumed in ridicu lous Mother Ilubbnrda , and wearing wiga of long hair , and borring a banner , "Tho Audubon Girls. " Thia was probably intended - tended aa a sharp tako-oll' the fact that some worthy women took part in n republican publican parade , but it was an insult to the rcspoctablo wives , daughters and sisters tors of respectable citizens , and auch an insult as was uncalled for and inexcusa ble. The respectable portion of the democratic party must have been ashamed of aomo of the rowdy features of the parade. Many of the decorations and illuminationa along the streets were beautiful , and the enthusiasm of demo crats was ouch aa to convince lookers-on that they really felt that they had somothinp ; to exult over , and that victory was auroly theira. The demonstration wan got up on ohort notice , and hencj did not com pare favorably with previous efforts. Ono of the featuroa of the parade waa the "shot-gun brigade. " Composed of thirty mon , under command of A. C Graham and Mart Unrdin. They kept liring paper shells , and in all discharged 3000. Great care was taken to prevent accidents , and luckily no harm resulted , though this part of the proceedings v/na very risky. The music waa furniahed by the Union Pacific and the Bavarian and the Independent bands , throe in all. It will pay you to DUO our line of sloven before you buy. DK Vor , & WUIOHT , 50 J Broadway. A great deal of interest is manifested iu our meetings , both religious and literary , and now , when the weather ia favorable , wo have no difliculty in filling every seat in our hall at either the gospel ser vice or the literary and nocial. The com mittee in charge of those rcapectivo meetings find it much easier to secure help than they did a few months ago. The meetings for young HIP n only , viz. , young men's mooting and Bible study are not largely attended , but they are most proiitablo to those who como reg ularly. The object of these meetings is to train young men to use the power of song and the word of God in such a manner as to bo able to deal with any who may from time to time inquire after the way of lifo and truth. A moil u the features proaontod to the public was the "mock congress , " given at Ueno'a hall on Tuesday evening , October 28th , when a largo crowd greeted us. More ontortainmpnta of this kind will bo given thia winter , and wo pro poeo that every ono ahall bo an improvement mont on the ono preceding. The Sioux City Journal of Saturday says ; An affair of too revolting a nature to bo more than alluded to waa the talk of the street for a few minutes yester day , to the exclusion oven of the Now York election. The waltz ( iiiiulrlllo and lawn tennis quadrille will bo the tquarn dancca of the winter , without doubt. The plain qindrillea will be danced more like the Sixratcga quad rillo. That IB , the first four will dance with the aldo couples instead of remain ing quiet In the round dances I ho waltz rill , aa Ufluul , bo the dance. I think it safe to nay the waltz will never bu super seded. The other round dances will go ns usual. None of them have been dropped. To n lady , especially , a dance without n programme la an all'iiir tame , spiritless and altogether unprofitable. Without hose little cardboards oho can'tgivomore han ton waltzes to her favorite partner , and provo it. Shu naturally gota mixed in her engagements. Her mind should ia gtvon to the ploaatiroa of the evening nd not to its detail. The stocks of programmes prepared or the winter season are the neatest and root artistic that have appeared for ears. The prevailing color of the paper s white , as in note paper fiuiclon. The vay-up , elegant and simply peafoct thing n this line is a plain , square , heavy card vith crimped , beveled cdgo. The edge a cither plain or gilt , according to the aatu of thu purchaser. Thus runa the taste of the public. For awoll secret society balls , the pa- ior makers have ( 'one the proper thing. Clio programmes are generally plain white cards ot heavy paper , with rounded or square corners. The beveled edge in thoao may bo plain or gilt. In the center tor of the outside the ombosai-d figure of > rominout emblems of the society are ) laced in silver , gold and bronze. Thoao designs are very neat and beautiful. Another design - sign moat striking and elegantly executed s that of a burning interior aeon through ho charred edges of a picture. The fig- ires are a fireman , who has dropped bin loao to grasp the child n woman ia lift- ng to him. Thu curling smoke shadows tlu Ecpno. This is lithographed in beau- Ifihi tints. The leader ia the usual ivhito card with a lithographed figure of a iago ! , gentleman in the costume of ' 70 , lower girl , etc In the way of programmes for fancy dross parties , the designer has racked his Drains to some cll'iiot. A pretty conceit Is n folded glove in all thu fashionable shades. Another now ono is a Bath nachot , hand-painted on a heavy cream beveled card-board. Another aachoi covers the whole card neatly. The satii is of plain bright color , and ia thu back ground for the embossed figures of flower girl and her attendant. A card with a half otchcd figure of a girl holding email folded card bearing on its outsidi the legend , "Order of the dance , " is among the neat and less expensive cards Unless the party is to bo rechorcho it the extreme ono can hardly ch.oao amiaa among the legion of lovely programmes shown.
