KA. DAINTY AGAIN PllKU
An Illinois Divorce AVlilcli IicnvcH the
Sinjjo llcf Only Tic.
Among the numerous divorce cases
calling for ndjudlctlon in Judge Giud-
nor's court yoaterdny , snya the Chicago
Herald , the suit of Albert II. Dainty
against Ltura E. D.\inty appeared to
awaken the greatest public interest and
curiosity. For several yoaas , Laura
D.unty , the defendant , waa known as an
accomplished reader and elocutionist.
From the platform eho natnr.Uly gravi *
tatod to the stage , and for aomo two or
three years past no nnmo has been inoro
widely known throughout the dramatic
profession or inoro constantly before the
public than that of the gifted and prom
ising actress , Laura Dainty. Her
friends continually urged her to adopt the
stagoas a profession , and she almost ut
once stopped into a starring engagement
with the Mountain Pink company , in
which she undertook the loading role of
Sincerity Weeks.
Her marriage with Albert II. D.unty
occurred In April , 187-1 , in thin city. They
appeared , from the evidence adduced ut
the trial yesterday , to have lived very
happily until during the past live or six
yoaro , when an estrangement appeared to
grow up between them and widen ns
Laura forsook the fireside for the foot
lights. She osys they ' 'drifted apart ;
that the fault was as nil her own , and
that she was not happy. " These expres
sions point to the sorrowful outcome of
their early friendship and all'oction. Al
bert li. Dainty testified that his wife had
steadily rrfusod to live with him since
1880. JIo continued to provide for her
and thechild which was born to them ,
notwithstanding this condition of things ,
us far as she would permit him.
Mrs. Elsie Shepard gave evidence re
lating to Laura Dainty's pleasure trips to
Colorado , Boston , California and other
places. Between 1880 and 1831 oho
several times asked Mrs. Dainty why
"she did as she was doing. " To thia oho
said in reply that she was not happy , and
preferred to bo independent , but inoro
trcaucntly sought to avoid nil discussion
on the nubjcct. Albert continued to the
ast moment to contribute about $150 a
month to the support of his wife and
child , although she was nblo so support
icrsolf from her professional earnings.
It was brought out in the evidence that
ktio parties had not lived together for the
past few years , Laura constantly rooming
with Mrs. Shepard , and Judge Gardner
accordingly granted the decree nought.

Philadelphia.
Now York Sun.
An immense drove of sheep went
stumbling , tumbling , and troiting out of
Noivnrk u few days ago on their way to
Philadelphia. They seemed to walk all
over ono another , bumped together , ami
crowded until it Boomed us though some
must have been trodden under the foot of
ho others. A rough-looking countryman
: rudgod ahead in ttio middle of the road
and the sheep followed closely , lie
seemed as dusty , ill-humored , and out of
sorts as the snoop thomoolves. In the
roar n tall and gaunt farmer tramped
along with a long hickory slick in tils
tin ml. At every few stops ho uttered a
peculiar cry , and whenever the sheep
Itwged behind ho touched them up with
his hickory stick. At his heels , and
bringing up the tail end ot the procession ,
was a long-bodied , loan , and se.irroii
shepherd's dog. lie run with his nose
close to the ground , and apparently paid
little attention to the drovo. But when
two of the sheep got astray and trotted
into a garden , the dog jumped over the
fence and chased them back in line in no
time. As ho forced them into the herd
the sheep swerved away from him. The
dog trottol around the drove , making it
still more compact In form , and returned
to his master , who by this time was walk
ing on the sidewalk beside the writer.
"Flow m < iny sheep arc there there/ / "
"Guess. "
"Well , about eight hundred. "
"V'ou'ro way oil' , " said the man , with a
good-natured grin. "Thoro'a . ' ! , : t ! > 8.
"SVhoro do you take them to ? "
"Wo drive them from hero to Phila
delphia , selling them on the way to
butchers , or whoever wants to buy them ,
and gottiru' rid of what remains in the
city of Brotherly Livo. "
"They are owned In Philadelphia , arc
they ? "
' No , they ain't , " said the man , polite
ly. "They are owned by A B. Matth
ews , of Kideas City , Missouri , and they
travel about fifteen milod a d y , and
they're mi infernal nuieanco. "
After this ho walked along In silence
aomo time , and then made a general re-
mrrk that indhatod that his life vraa not
one of unalloyed happiness.
"If it wasn't for that dorg , " ho oaid ,
kicking the liruto affectionately us ho
passed him , "my nrntu and mo could
never got this cattle through on time ,
but that animal ii worth tea men. Good
sheep dogs , you know , are scarce now in
this part of the country. I wouldri t

much as any man , I don't care who lip is
If I should toll you some of the things
that dorg haa done you'd call inn a liar ,
and ns I don't wiuh no such reputation
I'll keep quiet. "
Holloction caused by this thought over
came him , nnd he trudged along in abso
lute cilenco for some tune. At last ho
raised his head nnd conllmied "Who
